November 1804 an ihrem neuen Wohnort Weimar an.
Castle of Residence Burgplatz 4 1 PERSON? Which symbol can be found exactly in the middle of the inner courtyard? After a journey of 34 days with an entourage of horse-drawn carriages, the 18-year-old daughter of the Russian Tsar arrived at her new domicile in Weimar on 9th November 1804. She had just married the Grand Duke of Weimar, Carl Friedrich. In comparison to her place of origin, the small town with approximately 8000 inhabitants, and her new living quarters in the castle, must have appeared rather modest. Weimar is a large castle, she wrote to her mother. She spent 54 years at the court of the Duchy of Saxonyweimar-Eisenach. maria Pawlowna / 04 1804 to 1859

Castle of Residence Burgplatz 4 1 Building? What architectural differences are there between the building as it is today and the castle as shown in the painting by Friedrich preller the Elder? At one time there used to be a moated castle by the River Ilm. The Castle of Residence one can see today was rebuilt after a fire in 1774. One can find different architectural elements in its design, beginning with the Middle Ages and continuing to the early 20th century; the latest features may be seen in the castle s southern wing, with the wooden paving in the gateway. On the occasion of Maria Pawlowna s arrival in 1804, some rooms were altered and specially redesigned, for instance the well-preserved Cedar Chamber and the Russian Orthodox Chapel. Nowadays one can visit the Schlossmuseum here. maria Pawlowna / 06 1774

Castle of Residence Burgplatz 4 1 quote Journal of Luxury, Vol. 19, Weimar 1804 The festive procession passed the Ilm Bridge and was welcomed by the city councillor before a triumphal arch on the Kegelplatz. Pulled by 8 Palominos, the carriage continued on its way to the Schlossplatz. A little later the couple appeared on the balcony and gladly accepted the adulation of the citizens, the cavalcades, and the choirs. Afterwards the Ducal Family dined in the castle, while in the City Hall an opulent dinner ball took place. In Weimar and its surrounding villages the festivities would continue during the following days. maria Pawlowna / 08 1804
Castle of Residence Burgplatz 4 1 A salon was created in the bel étage of the castle, the socalled Cedar Chamber, specially to meet Maria Pawlowna s needs. The fine wood panelling is richly decorated with mirrors and etchings, following antique examples. For Pawlowna the chamber served as a place of retreat; she used it for private conversations and for playing the piano and the harp. maria Pawlowna / 09 Klassik Stiftung Weimar 1804 to 1859
Royal Theatre of Weimar Theaterplatz 2 Person Three days after her arrival, Maria Pawlowna was welcomed in the Royal Theatre of Weimar with the poem Homage to the Arts, written by Friedrich Schiller and recited by the poet himself. Maria Pawlowna admired Goethe ( Tour), and she had a deep love of music and drama. She invited internationally renowned musicians to the city and, in order to retain Franz Liszt ( Tour) as Royal Director of Music in Weimar, she gave valuable support to him and his work. After Goethe s death she supported the preservation of Weimar s classical traditions. maria Pawlowna / 10 1804 to 1859
1804 maria Pawlowna / 11
Royal Theatre of Weimar Theaterplatz 2 quote Friedrich Schiller The Homage of the Arts Seven types of art appear in the poem: architecture, sculpture, painting, poetry, music, dancing and drama. Genius: And all of us who here appear before you, Majestic sisterhood of noble arts, For leave to serve you, Princess, would implore you: Do but command, and we will play our parts. As Theban walls obeyed the lyre s sweet sounding, So here the senseless stone shall live at thine, A world of beauty rise, thine eyes astounding. All the Arts: For strength must wed with strength, and so impart Beauty to life and life to forms of art. maria Pawlowna / 11 1804

Royal Theatre of Weimar Theaterplatz 2 Building? How does the Theatre building from around 1800 differ from the one you can see today? The founding of the Royal Theatre in 1791 on behalf of Duke Carl august was intended to demonstrate the Court s close connections with literature, drama, and music. From 1799 onwards Goethe ( Tour) and Schiller collaborated here. Plays by Shakespeare and Lessing were staged, together with works by Schiller and Goethe themselves, but the theatre also oversaw performances of works by popular playwrights like August Kotzebue. The classicist Theatre building you can see today was constructed in 1908. Since 1919 it has been called the German National Theatre. maria Pawlowna / 13 1791 1799
Was befindet sich heute in diesem Gebäude? Russian Orthodox Chapel Historical Cemetery Am Poseckschen Garten 4 PERSON? How is the chapel used today? Do you think that there is still an Orthodox community in Weimar? Maria Pawlowna s sudden death on 23rd July 1859 was followed by a ceremonial burial, after which the Court went into mourning for half a year. The Orthodox Sepulchral Chapel was built between 1860 and 1862 in the style of an Old Russian church, with five gold-plated onion domes. Maria Pawlowna s coffin was placed in its vault, on Russian earth brought from St Petersburg, close to the coffin of her husband Carl Friedrich, who had been buried in the adjacent vault reserved for members of the Royal Family ( Fürstengruft ). maria Pawlowna / 18 1859 1862
