7 1 Residenzschloss Burgplatz 4 Johann Wolfgang Goethe wurde 1749 in Frankfurt geboren. Schon als Junge liebte er Literatur und Theater, studierte Jura in Leipzig und Strassburg. Durch seinen Briefroman Die Leiden des jungen Werther wurde er 1774 plötzlich berühmt. Nach einem ersten Besuch in Weimar siedelte er 1775 hierher über und wird Beamter der Stadt. Ihn verband eine enge Freundschaft mit dem 18-Jährigen Herzog Carl August und er übernahm verschiedene Ämter im Herzogtum, faktisch diente er ihm als Ministerpräsident. Person goethe / 04

8 Castle of Residence Burgplatz 4 1 Person Johann Wolfgang Goethe was born in Frankfurt in As a boy he already loved literature and the theatre. He studied law in Leipzig and Strasbourg. He quickly made his name in 1774 through his epistolary novel The Sorrows of Young Werther. After his first visit to Weimar he settled there in 1775 and became a city official. He developed a close friendship with the 18-yearold Duke Carl August and took over various official duties in the duchy, serving more or less as his Minister President. goethe /

Sein Kopf, und Genie ist bekannt. Sie werden selbst einsehen, dass ein Mann wie dieser nicht würde die langweilige und mechanische Arbeit, in einem Landes Collegio von untenauf zu dienen aushalten. Einem Mann von Genie, nicht an den Ort gebrauchen, wo er seine außerordentlichen Talente nicht gebrauchen kann; heißt denselben missbrauchen. Goethe is so upright, has an extremely good and warm heart; not only I but men with deeper insight congratulate me for having this man at my side. His head and his genius are well known. You yourself will accept that a man such as this would not endure the boring and mechanical duties or work his way up in a provincial council. 13 1 Residenzschloss Burgplatz 4 An der Ilm stand hier zunächst eine Wasserburg. Das Residenzschloss wie es heute zu sehen ist, wurde 1774 nach einem Brand neu aufgebaut. Der Schlossbaukommission gehörte auch Goethe an. Er engagierte den Architekten Johann August Arens und führte dessen Arbeiten später selbst fort. Man kann Bauelemente vom Mittelalter bis zum frühen 20. Jahrhundert erkennen, wie der zuletzt gebaute Südflügel des Schlosses mit dem Holzpflaster in der Tordurchfahrt. On this site by the Ilm there stood originally a moated castle. The Castle of Residence that we see today was newly built in 1774 following a fire. The building commission for the palace also included Goethe. He engaged the architect Johann August Arens, whose functions he later took over himself. One can recognise building elements from the middle ages right up to the 20th Century, like the most recently built south wing of the palace with the wooden cobbles in the entrance gateway. Ist ein altes Häusgen drinne, das ich mir reparieren lasse., schreibt Goethe im Mai Das Weinberghäuschen kaufte der Herzog Carl August und schenkte es ihm. So erhielt er das Bürgerrecht von Weimar. Goethe genoss das Leben in der Natur; es ist überliefert, dass er mit dem Herzog nachts in der Ilm nackt badete. Das Haus war seine Zuflucht vor höfischen Pflichten und gesellschaftlichen Anlässen und gab ihm die Ruhe zum schreiben.? 21 3 Goethe-Nationalmuseum Frauenplan 1 In die repräsentative Stadtwohnung zog er 1782; er brauchte Platz für seine kunst- und naturwissenschaftlichen Sammlungen. Geadelt durfte er nun das von in seinem Namen führen. Seine Pflichten engten ihn zunehmend ein, er verließ heimlich seinen Kurort Karlsbad und begab sich 1786 auf seine italienische Reise. Als er zurückkehrte, lernte er bald seine spätere Frau Christiane kennen. Weil sie eine Bürgerliche ist, darf er zeitweise nicht in diesem Haus mit ihr leben. 33 4 Goethe-Schiller Denkmal Theaterplatz Großherzog Carl Alexander plante ein Doppeldenkmal für die beiden wichtigsten Dichter Weimars. Die Konflikte, wie das Denkmal ( Tour) auszusehen habe dauerten fast 20 Jahre. Der Bildhauer, Ernst Rietschel stellte Goethe und Schiller im Gewand ihrer Zeit dar. Obwohl Schiller größer war, sind beide Figuren fast gleich hoch, um eine ebenbürtige Bedeutung zu symbolisieren. Das Denkmal wurde am 4. September 1857 zu Ehren des Herzogs Carl August eingeweiht. Grand Duke Carl Alexander proposed a double statue for Weimar s two most prominent poets. The debate as to what the statue ( Tour) should look like lasted almost 20 years. The sculptor Ernst Rietschel represented Goethe and Schiller in the garments of their times. Although Schiller was taller, as figures they are almost of equal height, in order to symbolise their equal importance. The monument was inaugurated on the 4th September 1857 in honour of Duke Carl August. It is the landmark of Weimar. goethe /

37 4 Goethe-Schiller Denkmal Theaterplatz Im Auftrag von Herzog Carl August sollte die Gründung des hoftheaters 1791 eine traditionelle Verbundenheit des Hofes mit Literatur, Theater und Musik demonstrieren. Goethe und Schiller wirkten hier ab 1799 gemeinsam. Gespielt wurden Stücke von Shakespeare, Lessing, Schiller und Goethe selbst, aber auch von populären Dramatikern wie August Kotzebue. Das klassizistische Theater wie wir es heute sehen wurde erst 1908 errichtet.
