Für die Limnologie stellt ein Fließgewässer einen Lebensraum für spezifische Organismengemeinschaften dar, welche in ihrer Zusammensetzung den ökologischen Zusammenhang mit der Umwelt widerspiegeln. Ein Fließgewässer ist ein offenes Ökosystem, da es in enger Verbindung zu den Landökosystemen steht, d.h., daß der Energie- und Stoffhaushalt von Fließgewässern in einer Wechselwirkung mit terrestrischen Ökosystemen steht. Die in ein Gewässer eingetragenen organischen Nährstoffe werden vom Gewässer weitergeführt, an anderer Stelle in anorganisches Material umgesetzt und an wieder anderer Stelle erneut von Pflanzen aufgenommen. Endpunkt dieser Kreisläufe ist das Meer. Ziel des Referates soll es sein, die unterschiedlichen Faktoren wie geomorphologische Dynamik, klimatische Verhältnisse, geologische Strukturen und die sich daraus entwickelnden biologischen Strukturen im Ökosystem "Fließgewässer" zu erklären. Ein typisches Fließgewässer läßt sich in eine Quellregion, Oberlauf, Mittellauf, Unterlauf und eine Mündungsregion gliedern. Diese Gliederung kommt zustande, da sich auch die ökologischen Faktoren in diesen Regionen kontinuierlich ändern.
