4 2 Teaching suggestions: Christmas fun Activity 1: Warming up Write the words FATHER CHRISTMAS on the board. Tell your pupils they have three minutes to use the letters to make up new words of two and more letters. Pupils write the words down. Stop them after three minutes. Now split the class in half so you end up with two teams. They queue up in front of the board (i. e. two queues, one per team). Each group gets one piece of chalk. The first pupils in each queue run behind the board and write down one of their words. They come back and hand the chalk to the next person in the queue and so on. After another three minutes, stop the competition, ask the pupils to sit down and turn the board over/around. Ask one pupil from each group to cross out the words that both groups have found. Then rub them out. The remaining words are then counted. For each three-letter word, add one point to the score; for each four-letter word, add three points; for each five-letter word, add five points etc. Needless to say, the group with the highest score wins. Some words that can be found in FATHER CHRISTMAS: is, he, me, am, her, the, fat, far, Sam, Sir, Miss, Mrs, his, rat, fat, sit, hat, team, friar, chest, faster, asthma, hamster, Activity 2: Cooling down Ask your pupils to find the following words in the grid (see worksheet). They should work on their own. Explain any unknown words first (possibly the capitalized words you find in the solution). The solution can be photocopied onto an OHP transparency after 5 minutes. (Note: even fairly grown-up pupils enjoy doing this!) Activity 3: An additional idea Lots of pupils are fond of puzzling out word search puzzles like the following. You can write these on the board or hand them out with the word search (cf. below). It s also a nice idea to use this when testing vocabulary (once they ve got the hang of it, anyway). How does it work? In this sequence of letters, two words are mixed together. Find the English word and cross out its letters. The letters that have not been crossed out should spell a German word. Translate this word into English and move on to the next line. Find the word there, cross out the letters, and read the next German word. 6 3 Class 8 Two Christmas stories in one Two stories have been mixed together here. Can you separate them? Christmas with Alex in Washington State. In America, people love to decorate at Christmas time, especially outside many have hundreds and thousands of lights to light up their homes and gardens. Like English children, American children believe that Father Christmas or Santa Claus, as most people call him brings them their presents. Heike and her American friend Alex are talking about Christmas in Germany and America. Perhaps you know the story of Rudolph, the red-nosed reindeer. Heike thinks it s really cool to have an advent calendar filled with chocolates. Together with his eight reindeer friends, Rudolph draws Santa s sleigh. They stop near the chimneys and Santa climbs down into the house. She also likes the idea of advent wreaths with four candles. In America, December 24 is a normal working day. December 25 is the really important day in the US. On the other hand, Heike is surprised that Christmas cards in America are different from German cards because most of them just say Happy Holidays. Alex s little sister Macy is the one in the family who likes Christmas best. As early as possible, children race downstairs to the living-room to open their presents. Unfortunately, she doesn t always think that the presents her brother gives her are the best. Later in the day, many families have their Christmas dinner: roast turkey, vegetables and pumpkin pie. However, in some states it may be quite hot, and people prefer picnics and might even hit the beach. Last year, the family went skiing in the mountains. A growing number of people feel that Christmas has become much too commercial, with families spending hundreds of dollars on presents. Spending Christmas in a log cabin was great fun, but it s also nice to have your own Christmas tree at home in your own living-room. The children would like to spend Christmas in a bigger town sometime. Therefore, they prefer to celebrate the Jewish Festival of Lights, Hanukkah, or they concentrate on the winter solstice, the day when the longest night of the year (December 21) is over and the moment of greatest darkness is gone for one more year. Maybe Alex can visit Heike and find out more about Christmas in Germany. 6/7

7 3 Teaching suggestion: Two Christmas stories in one Hand out the text, face down, so that the pupils can t see the words. Ask them to take out a red and a green pencil. Now they can turn the sheets over. Pupils have two minutes to mark the two stories in different colours. After three minutes, everyone must stop writing. All the pupils stand up and, with their sheet in hand, walk about the room, swapping their sheets with whomever crosses their path. This can be done best to the sound of music (Christmas carols?). When you stop the music, the pupils go back to their seats with the sheet they have received from a classmate. They then have one minute to look at the solution marked on the sheet. Now read out the two stories in class. Finally, you might like to talk about customs and traditions in Britain, America or in German families.
