4 Welcome Thank you for choosing MINIMAX Klangbox. You will have just as much fun with your MINIMAX as we had when developing this unique and characteristic Synthesizer. Please read the manual thoroughly in order to fully take advantage of the many features the MINIMAX has to offer. Introduction One may not consider a synthesizer with three Oscillators and noise, a mixer as well as a filter followed by amplifiers and two envelopes, as being spectacular in sound. But we are not just talking about any kind of synthesizer but about the" synthesizer that started it all. MINIMAX is a perfect emulation of one of the most popular synthesizers ever. Its ease of use and easy to learn sound technique made this instrument a role model for many other synthesizers. Its sound is famous. The oscillators and filters are extremely powerful and the envelopes extremely quick. Many software and hardware companies have tried to copy its features but have failed by doing so. Its hardware duplicate had different built-in components taking away from its original sounding character. Most software programs emulated only parts of the hardware such as the filter. Significant elements like Oscillators and envelopes were for the most part forgotten. MINIMAX is different from anything available before. MINIMAX does not only emulate parts of the instrument. We consider it as being the synthesizer. Today, where most hardware components are difficult to get and software reached the limits, MINIMAX has managed to go beyond. 4

5 Within the MINIMAX, we have remodeled all significant sound elements after the original s circuitry. In addition, a steady cross-check with the Original was made and now offers even identical knob positions as within the original. No reproduction has yet been that precise. Measurements and adjustments were only a part of the work. Beforehand there was another problem to tackle. The original analog model produces frequencies which when copied or emulated would produce aliasing. Those who are familiar with aliasing know how awful it sounds. The MINIMAX sound generation is based on newly developed algorithms that are free of any aliasing. The MINIMAX handles even the most complex Modulations, filter FM or Oscillator-Modulation. Moreover, the nice thing about this, the MINIMAX will always sound like the original. Thus MINIMAX tops today s digital synthesis technique. Setup and Layout Just as the original, the MINIMAX has one oscillator section with three oscillators. Oscillator 3 can also be used as an LFO or better said FO (Frequency Oscillator). Oscillators can be mixed with noise and an external signal within the mixer section. This is followed by the filter and an amplifier each using an envelope with attack, decay and sustain pro voice. In addition to the original model, MINIMAX has also been equipped with an additional effects section featuring chorus/flanger and delay. The quality of the synthesis algorithms in this instrument is remarkable. Because the oscillators use the frequency spectrum s full bandwidth, more overtones are produced than in earlier algorithms. Even the saturation level in the mixer section for internal and external signals were taken into consideration. Saturation gives the sound more presence. Especially the filter profits greatly from the new algorithms. Existing filter-algorithms may have had resonance, but in general they weren t that exciting like the analog archetype. Using digital filters caused high attention to avoid Aliasing when using filter sweeps. Many filters therefore reduce the amount of resonance or don t open wide enough to not cross the borderline to Aliasing (half sample frequency). Filter sweeps with such filters have been "so 5

6 so", but normally were lacking kind of vitality. The filter implemented in your MINIMAX now provides all the resonances and distortions, you desire. Filter resonance can be fully tuned on and sweeps can be performed without Aliasing, even when exceeding the half sample frequency border. This way also a Filter FM with all the possible side chains occurring is easily possible. Besides that the envelopes of the MINIMAX don t need hideaway from the analog paragons. They re not only fast, but also exactly modeled like the Original s behavior. Although our major goal for the development of the MINIMAX has been to reach out for getting as close as possible, we decided to also implement some of the never fulfilled dreams of the Original. The envelopes now have an adjustable velocity and the trigger behavior can be easily switched. Moreover the Low-Note-Priority can be changed to Last-Note-Priority. You will note, that there s an extended effects section included now, which can be switched off to receive the Original Sound. And additionally the Original had only one, but beautiful voice, desperately waiting for others to join. Now it s all in your hands you can choose between playing monophonic or polyphonic it s up to you. The Creamware team wishes you lots of fun as you explore your new MINIMAX Klangbox! 6

7 Getting started Making Connections Connecting the power adaptor To connect your Klangbox to a mains supply, please use the power adaptor supplied with the unit. First connect the power adaptor to your Klangbox. Before plugging the adaptor's plug into a mains socket, make sure it is compatible with the mains voltage in your country. If you lose the power supply, a standard AC or DC 12V / 1.5A power adaptor can be used as a replacement. The Klangbox power socket requires a hollow plug (5.5 mm x 2.1mm x 11.5 mm, centre positive). MIDI connections There are two ways to play your Klangbox using MIDI: 1. Connect your Klangbox directly to a master keyboard. 2. Connect your Klangbox to your computer's MIDI port in order to use it with a sequencer or with the Klangbox Remote Software. Connect the MIDI in and out of your Klangbox to the MIDI in and out of your keyboard or computer. The MIDI input of your Klangbox should be connected to the MIDI output of your keyboard / computer, and vice versa. The Klangbox incoming MIDI signal can also control another instrument if you connect the Klangbox 'MIDI thru' to the instrument's MIDI in. If your computer does not have a MIDI port, you can use USB connection as an alternative. The yellow MIDI LED displays detected MIDI messages that are coming in at MIDI In with the adjusted MIDI channel. 7

8 Audio Connections In order to hear the Klangbox, connect its stereo outputs to the left / right inputs of a mixer, a computer sound card or a HiFi system. You can also process external signals by plugging an audio sound source into your Klangbox input. Power Switch This is rather obvious, but in order to activate the Klangbox please turn the power switch on! The blue LED is the displaying the power status and the yellow LED is detecting MIDI. USB Connections and driver installation (Windows XP) An alternative to using MIDI to connect your Klangbox to a computer is to use the built-in USB interface. On a PC, this requires Windows XP with Service Pack 2; the Mac version supports OS10.4. After connecting the Klangbox to a computer, Windows will automatically recognize the Klangbox as an audio USB instrument. No extra drivers are required - you can start playing right away! After starting your sequencer program (shown here: Cubase SX), you can use the USB audio instrument driver as a MIDI port. Once in a while, under older versions of Windows XP (before Service Pack 2), the USB port will not re-appear on screen after disconnecting the Klangbox. In this case, please reboot Windows XP. After rebooting, your USB port should appear again. Installation of the Remote Software To install the Remote Software supplied with the Klangbox on your PC, please put the CD-ROM labelled 'Klangbox into the CD-R drive of your computer find and doubleclick Minimax Klangbox 3.3K.exe in the Minimax folder. 8

9 You will then see the message 'Welcome to the Installation' - please continue by pressing 'Next'. On the following page you will find the license agreement. Please read it carefully and if you agree, select "I accept the license terms" - then continue by pressing the 'Next' button. You can now set the installation path within the 'Installation path' drop-down menu. If you don t set a dedicated path here, the Remote Software will be installed to e.g. C:\Programs\Creamware\MINIMAX 3.3K. Installation requires 8 MB of empty hard disk space. The 'Choose Start Menu Folder' lets you choose your own directory. If you don't make a choice, a directory will be created. Presets The selected preset number of your internal Klangbox preset can easy changed from an external keyboard or MIDI software via MIDI Bank select and MIDI Program Change. Bank 0 provides the first bank which is named Factory Bank and Bank 1 is addressing the second internal bank, which is named User Bank. Once a bank is selected presets can be selected with Programm Change only. Default is the Factory Bank. 9

10 Remote Software General To control your Klangbox with the Remote Software, you have to connect the Klangbox to a computer via USB or MIDI. Panel Layout The Remote Software has three pages for sound control: the 'Main' page, the 'Add' page contains additional parameters as aftertouch and modulation wheel settings. Control settings for the chorus, flanger and delay effects are found on the 'Effects' page. An additional 'Prefs' page contains the Remote Software's system settings and also a facility to update your Klangbox operating system when updates become available. On the Remote Software's lower panel you will find the preset administration section, an integrated virtual MIDI keyboard and also a MIDI monitor which enables you to view incoming MIDI messages. 10

11 MAIN Page CONTROLLERS In this section, we will take into account common operations concerning this instrument and its modulation matrix. Tune This switch changes the entire instrument s tune by +/- 2.5 half steps. Glide On This button activates the Glide function. A played note will then glide into the next. Glide When Glide is activated, you can adjust the glide time between the notes with the Glide knob. Modulation Mix Here, you can adjust the mix between Oscillator 3 and noise. The resulted signal serves as a modulation source for the oscillator bank and filter. In order to hear the results, all modulations need to be adjusted in equivalence on the modulation s wheel intensity. Decay On This switches the envelopes decay time to release. The release time will be also modulated with the Decay knobs. If Decay is turned off, release will be at minimum. 11

12 OSCILLATOR BANK The oscillator bank has three oscillators. It is possible with each oscillator, to adjust its octave range as well as waveform. Oscillator 2 and 3 can further more be detuned with the Frequency knob. Because oscillator 3 can also be used as a modulation source, it is possible to separate it from the keyboard s frequency input. The oscillator then acts as an LFO (Low Frequency Oscillator). You can adjust its speed with Range and Frequency. A button activates the oscillators pitch modulation. An LFO is used as a modulation source and can control parameters such as cutoff for example. Because oscillator 3 modulates much faster than an LFO, it is almost incorrect to call it an LFO. Range You can choose the oscillator octave s range. The adjustments are Lo, 32, 16, 8, 4 and 2 where as the values 32 and 16 are best for basses and values 8 and 4 best for lead sounds. If you would like to use oscillator 3 as an LFO, then choose the value Lo. Waveform You can choose the oscillator s waveform. For each oscillator, there is a choice of six waveforms, which are triangle, a mix between Saw Wave and Triangle, an Ascending Saw Wave, Square, Wide Pulse and Narrow Pulse. As a special feature, Oscillator 3 uses a Seceding Saw Wave instead of a mix between Triangle and Saw Wave. Frequency You can detune oscillator 2 and 3 with oscillator 1. The scale shows the amount of detune in half tone steps with a maximum of 9 half tone steps. 12

13 OSC 3 Control It is possible here to separate oscillator 3 from the keyboard ( s frequency input). Oscillator 3 acts then as sound element with a fixed frequency - for example, as an LFO. When oscillator 3 is used as an LFO, you can adjust its speed with Range for coarse alterations and with Frequency for finer alterations. Oscillator Modulation Here, you can activate pitch modulation for all three oscillators. The signal, adjusted within the Modulation Mix works as a modulation source. This can be either oscillator 3, noise or a mixer of both. The modulation wheel and its parameters can adjust the intensity. (Shown in the Modulation Wheel Settings under the Remote Software) MIXER In this section, all signals are mixed before they go through the Filter. The signals are oscillator 1 through, the noise generator and an external signal. That is altogether six sound sources including filter oscillation, directly produced by the filter. Every sound source has a specified knob to adjust the volume and an on/off switch. If wanted or needed, it is also possible to distort external signals. Volume Here you can adjust the volume of each oscillator. External Input Volume This controls the volume for external signals. In order to hear a signal, you need to connect the MINIMAX Audio-Input with an external sound source. The view control is above the volume slider. The louder the signal, the brighter is the light. 13

14 Feedback on This function connects the synthesizer s output to the external input. You can use the external input amplifier to distort incoming signals. External Input Volume controls the amount of feedback or distortion. Bear in Mind that an external signal source cannot be used in this modus. Noise Volume Here, you can adjust the noise s volume. If noise acts as a modulation source, volume adjustment will not affect the intensity of the modulation. In this case the modulation signal will be taken as is before going through this section. Noise White/Pink You can choose the type of noise. Your choice will affect modulation if noise is used as a modulation source. White noise is constant noise throughout the whole frequency spectrum where as Pink noise is noise only using frequencies the human ear can perceive. MODIFIERS In this section, filters and amplifiers modify the signal. Both filter and amplifier each have an envelope with attack, decay and sustain. A switch in the controllers section sets Release to the Decay Time. Filter The filter together with the envelopes define the way the sound progresses. The filter is a 24db/Octave Low pass filter. Frequencies under the cutoff frequency remain unchanged, reason for the term Low pass. There is a 24db/Octave reduction for frequencies over the cutoff frequency. With use of DSP-oversampling the filter remains free of aliasing. 14

15 Cutoff Frequency This is the frequency above which the spectrum is cut. Overtones are reduced this way. You can change the Cutoff Frequency manually. Emphasis Emphasis describes the Resonance parameters. The Resonance is created by routing the feedback of the Filter Output to the Filter Input. The frequencies around the cutoff frequency will be strengthened this way. On full Emphasis the Filter sweeps in its own resonance and creates a sinus tone at the chosen cutoff frequency. Therefore the Filter can be looked upon as the sixth sound source. Amount of Contour Adjust the intensity of the envelope on the Filter here. Cutoff will follow the envelope course with the adjusted intensity this way you can create a sound flow. Starting and End point of the envelope course is the adjusted cutoff frequency. Attack This controls the attack time of the envelope, the envelopes first segment. When setting Attack to a maximum, the envelope increases in time. The increase ratio is defined by amount of contour. Both Cutoff Frequency and Amount of Contour determine the maximum level. Decay This controls the envelopes second segment. Within the Decay- Phase the envelope falls down within the given time to the Sustain value adjusted. When activating the decay button in the Controllers Section, the envelope takes charge of the release time. Sustain This is the third segment of the envelope. Values here sustain the envelope after the Decay. The Sustain s effect is independent from Cutoff Frequency and Amount of Contour adjustments. 15

16 Release Finally yet importantly, Release is the fourth segment of the envelope. It is only active when the Decay button is on. There are no controllers for the release phase. The envelope goes back to its minimum in the Release-Phase. The value of the envelope is defined by cutoff. The time for the envelope falling to its minimum is defined by Decay. Filter Modulation Here you can activate additional Filter-Modulation. The source will be the signal defined within the Modulation- Mix section. This can be Oscillator 3, Noise or a mix of both. Intensity can be adjusted by using the Modulation- Wheel and its additional parameters. Keyboard Control This activates the Cutoff Keyfollow function with two steps possible. By activating the upper push button (1) the cutoff frequency follows with 1/3 octave per octave on the keyboard. By activating lower push button (2) the cutoff frequency follows with 2/3 octave per octave on the keyboard. Activating both push buttons will result in a full octave cutoff then follows the frequency plaid on the keyboard. Loudness Contour Together with the envelope the Amplifier defines the volume-curve of the sound. Attack Attack defines the duration of the first envelope segment. Within the Attack Phase the envelope curve increases within the adjusted time to the maximum adjusted volume. Decay Decay describes the duration of the second envelope segment. Within the Decay-Phase the envelope curve falls within the adjusted time to the volume adjusted under Sustain. If you activated the push button Decay within the Controllers Section, the time chosen there will be taken for release of the envelope. 16

17 Sustain Sustain is the third segment of the envelope curve and describes the volume, on which the envelope curve remains after Decay. Release Release is the fourth element in influencing the envelope curve. It is only active, if the Decay push button is switched to On position. The Release-Phase can not be adjusted by a dedicated button or knob. Within the Release-Phase the envelope falls down to its minimum and the sound disappears. The duration of this process can be adjusted with the Decay knob. OUTPUT Velocity The keyboard s velocity modulates every level of the envelope. The Envelope varies increasingly or decreasingly in modulation depending on how intense or less intense the keyboard is played. The upper knob controls the Amplifier s Envelope and the lower knob, the Filter Envelop. Volume With the Volume setting you define the volume of the complete instrument. Please turn down the volume, if distortion in polyphonic sounds should occur. Please note: the volume is placed before the effects section, thus you can use the volume knob also to measure the effects. If you have a heavy feedback from the flanger you can herewith avoid distortion. And most important: the volume settings will be stored separately for every preset. 17

18 ADD/Effects Page Additional Features The Controllers Section offers elements to adjust modulation and pitch band. Band Range Here you can adjust the number of half tone steps, by which the tone shall be pitched upon maximum movement of the Pitch-Wheel. MWint MWint adjusts the intensity of the Modulation Wheel. MWOffs Here you can adjust the offset or in other words the start value of the Modulation Wheel. Lo Note Lo Note starts the Low-Note-Priority function. Deep notes will have priority over high notes and a high note can not cut a deep note. If Low-Note is not active, the instrument will switch to Last-Note- Priority, so always the last note plaid will be active. Retrig Here you can adjust the Retrigger behavior. When activated, RET- RIG will restart the envelope curves with every new note received. 18

19 Single The single mode reduces the voices of the instrument to one voice, no matter how many voices had been loaded before. Herewith correct playback of Solo-Sounds with Portamento is possible. Within the CV SECTION you can adjust the aftertouch behavior. Osc Here you adjust the aftertouch intensity for Oscillator 3. Filter Choose here, how much effect aftertouch shall have on the Filter. Loudness This one adjusts the aftertouch intensity of the volume. 19

20 EFFECTS (Chorus/Delay) The 'Add' page contains also controls for the chorus / flanger and stereo delay effects built into your Klangbox. Chorus / Flanger Flanger This switch toggles between the chorus and flanger effects. Rate Controls the speed of the chorus / flanger modulation. Depth Sets the intensity of the modulation. Phase Sets the phase of the modulation from 0 to 180 degrees. Feedback Controls the amount of feedback (regeneration). Dry / Wet This controls the mix balance between the dry and effected signals - a maximum setting gives 100% chorused / flanged sound with no dry signal. Delay Left / Right This section contains separate controls for the left and right channels of the Klangbox stereo delay effect. BPM L Click on this button to set the left channel delay to a musical note length - if you click on the arrow to the right of the 'note' window, a drop-down menu appears with values ranging from whole notes (1/ 1) down to 64th note triplets (1/64T). (N.B. when the LFO is set to 'MIDI' on the 'Add page', the note length selected here will affect the LFO speed.) 20

21 BPM R Click here to set the right channel delay to a musical note length. Cross Controls the amount of left channel delay feedback signal sent to the right channel. Time (left / right) Adjusts the time of the delay from 1 to 1365 milliseconds (= seconds). If 'BPM' is selected, you can enter the value as a note length. Feedback (left / right) Controls the amount of feedback applied to the delay effect. (This affects the number of repeats you will hear.) Hi Damp (left / right) Controls the amount of 'treble damping' applied to the delay. (This simulates the effect of old tape echo devices, whose repeats used to grow successively duller on each reiteration!) Level (left / right) Controls the delay volume level. Dry / Wet As with the chorus / flanger effects, this controls the mix between the dry and effected signals - a maximum setting gives a delay-only sound with no dry signal mixed in. 21

22 PREFS PAGE The 'Prefs' page is used to edit the Klangbox system settings. MIDI In / Out Device (in / out) Use these windows to select the MIDI device (and port) you use for connecting the Klangbox MIDI in and out to your computer. Hardware Info In this section you will find details of your Klangbox hardware version (e.g. Prodyssey 1.05), which you may need when downloading firmware updates. Device Displays the name of your unit. Version Shows the version number of your Klangbox firmware. Serial Number Displays the serial number of your Klangbox. Refresh Click on this button to update the displayed information for the unit, while reconnecting the software with the Klangbox again. 22

23 Firmware Update This facility enables you to download software updates for your Klangbox operating system when they become available. Activation Key Enter the activation key code of your Klangbox here. DSP Software Displays the current DSP software, which is responsable for the sound of your Klangbox. Firmware Source File Displays the name of the update file to be downloaded. Browse Click on the 'Browse...' button to select the directory where the update file will be saved. Write Click on the 'write' button to install the update on your Klangbox. Global Channel By defining the channel you can change the MIDI channel of the hardware MIDI input of your Klangbox and also the MIDI channels of remote software. When connected via USB the Klangbox receives in Omni mode. 23

24 Bank There are two internal preset banks in Klangbox and each contains 128 presets. The first bank is named Factory Bank (F) and the second User Bank (U). They can also be addressed via MIDI bank select. Preset By clicking on the arrow keys you can step through the internal presets of the selected preset bank. EFX Bypass Pressing the 'bypass' button turns all effects off. (Depending on your effects settings, this might make some presets sound a little louder.) Once selected, the 'bypass' LED will light and all effects will be muted - pressing the button again cancels the 'bypass' and turns the effects back on. MIDI MONITOR The 'MIDI monitor' button is on the lower panel of the Remote Software's display. Click on it to view a list of incoming and outgoing MIDI messages. Clear Removes all entries from the MIDI monitor's display list. 24

25 MIDI KEYBOARD The Remote Software's built-in MIDI keyboard enables you to play the Klangbox without using an external keyboard or sequencer software - you can play the synthesizer with the computer mouse. Turn on the MIDI keyboard by clicking on its switch of the Remote Software's display. Octave Sets the range of the MIDI keyboard in octave steps. 25

26 PRESET ADMINISTRATION The Remote Software always displays the currently active preset's name at the top right of its panel. Use the forward / back arrows to the left of the preset name to step through the presets. When it comes to more advanced preset management, the Remote Software's integrated preset administration section is an easy and convenient way of storing, exchanging and editing your presets. Preset Window Click on 'Preset' (on the lower part of the Remote Software's front panel) to open the preset window and view lists of presets. Open / Save File When you click on the 'preset' button in the top left corner of the preset window, a drop-down file menu appears. Select 'open file' to open an existing preset file (which can contain multiple banks of presets) from your computer's hard drive. You can save preset files to create back-up copies, or to exchange with other Minimax Klangbox users. The extension for preset files is *.pre. The Preset Bank To save a preset to your computer hard drive, you first have to create a bank. If no bank exists or you want to create additional banks, select 'create bank' from the drop-down menu. Presets may be dragged and dropped from one bank to another. (To change the name of an existing bank, click and hold on its name, enter the new name and press 'enter' - the new bank name is now stored.) Use 'new file', 'open file', 'save file' and 'save file as' to manage your banks of presets. 26

27 Storing, deletion and changing of Presets To store a single preset in a bank, please create a new entry by selecting 'create preset' from the dropdown menu. The preset will be added to the bottom of the preset list with the name 'New Preset' - right click on the name to rename it. (You can also give it a number and rating, define its category and add a comment.) After creating a new entry, store the edited preset bank by clicking on 'save' or 'save as'. Right click on a preset name to select further options, 'restore', 'overwrite' and 'delete' (use 'restore' to load an existing preset). Upload of Preset files To transfer presets between the Klangbox hardware and the Remote Software, click on the 'Box' button. You will see four options in a drop-down menu: 1. 30 Warranty Regulations The hardware described within this documentation and the warranty regulations are governed by and granted according to German Law. CreamWare Audio GmbH ( CreamWare ) warrants, that the described product has been free of failures within parts or components of the hardware and was found to be fully functional. Any single units has been checked by Quality Assurance Department several times and with various measures, before this product has been delivered to you. Therefore please carefully read the following information, which are important in the case of probable damages or malfunctions: If goods are being found defective, missing features described within the present documentation or becoming defective due to eventual fabrication deficiency or material defects within the first six months after purchase, then CreamWare shall at its sole discretion and evaluation replace or repair the defective parts or goods. Multiple repairs shall be permissible. 33 Willkommen Vielen Dank, dass Sie sich für die MINIMAX Klangbox entschieden haben. Wir sind uns sicher, Sie werden mit Ihrem MINIMAX genau so viel Spass haben, wie wir an der Entwicklung dieses einzigartigen und charakterstarken Synthesizers. Bitte lesen Sie diese Bedienungsanleitung aufmerksam durch, um alle Funktionen des MINIMAX nutzen zu können. Einleitung Wenn man von einem Synthesizer mit drei Oszillatoren und Noise, einem Mischer, dazu ein Filter mit nachgeschalteter Verstärkung und zwei Hüllkurven spricht würde man in der heutigen Zeit wohl keine aufregenden Sounds erwarten. Wir reden aber nicht von irgendeinem Synthesizer, sondern wir reden von dem Synthesizer. MINIMAX ist eine perfekte Emulation eines der erfolgreichsten Synthesizer Modelle überhaupt. Der einfache Aufbau und die leicht zu erlernende Soundtechnik machten ihn zum Vorbild vieler anderer Synthesizer. Sein Klang ist berühmt. Die Oszillatoren machen Druck, die Filter packen zu und die Hüllkurven sind rasant schnell. Viele versuchten diese Eigenschaften zu kopieren. Es gab sowohl Hardware- als auch Software-Hersteller, die daran scheiterten. Bei Hardware kamen oftmals andere Bauteile zum Einsatz, die anders klingen mussten. Bei der Software wurden oft nur Teile der Originals wie z.b. das Filter kopiert. Wichtige Elemente wie z.b. Oszillatoren und Hüllkurven wurden aussen vor gelassen. 33

34 MINIMAX ist anders als alles zuvor. MINIMAX emuliert nicht nur Teile des Instruments, sondern MINIMAX ist das Instrument. Wo der Hardware bisher Grenzen gesetzt waren, da z.b. Bauteile nicht mehr erhältlich sind, und wo die Software sich bisher nicht hinwagte, dort ist MINIMAX. Im MINIMAX sind alle wichtigen Klang-Elemente des Originals am Schaltbild nachmodelliert. Zusätzlich erfolgte ein ständiger Abgleich am Original, so dass sogar Reglerpositionen übereinstimmen. So genau war noch keine Nachbildung. Das Messen und Einstellen war jedoch nur Teil der Arbeit. Vorher galt es noch eine andere Hürde zu nehmen. Das analoge Vorbild erzeugt Frequenzen, die durch Nachbildung mit üblichen Algorithmen unweigerlich zum Aliasing führen würden. Wer Aliasing kennt, weiss wie unangenehm das klingt. Die Klangerzeugung des MINIMAX ASB basiert auf neuentwickelten Algorithmen, die frei von Aliasing sind. Denn selbst die wildesten Modulationen, Filter FM oder Oszillation-Modulation, bewältigt MINIMAX mühelos. Und das Schöne dabei, MINIMAX klingt immer wie das Original. MINIMAX stellt somit die Spitze der heutigen digitalen Synthese-Technik dar. Aufbau und Überblick Wie das Original besitzt der MINIMAX eine Oszillator-Sektion mit drei Oszillatoren. Oszillator 3 kann auch als LFO, oder besser MO (Modulations Oszillator) verwendet werden. Die Oszillatoren werden zusammen mit Noise und einem externen Signal in der Mixer Sektion gemischt. Danach kommt das Filter und dann der Amplifier, die je eine Hüllkurve mit Attack, Decay und Sustain je Stimme besitzen. Als Erweiterung zum Original wurde MINIMAX eine Effekt-Sektion mit Chorus/Flanger und Delay spendiert. Die Qualität der Sythese-Algorithmen macht sich in allen Sektionen positiv bemerkbar. Da die Oszillatoren die volle Bandbreite des Frequenzspektrums nutzen, produzieren sie mehr Obertöne als bisherige Algorithmen. Auch das Sättigungsverhalten in der Mixer- Sektion, sowohl für interne als auch für externe Signale, wurde berücksichtigt. Die Sättigung verleiht den Klängen mehr Durchsetzungsvermögen. Besonders das Filter profitiert von den neuen Algorithmen. 34

35 Bisherige Filter-Algorithmen hatten zwar Resonanz, diese war jedoch nie so überzeugend wie beim analogen Vorbild. Bei digitalen Filtern musste darauf geachtet werden, dass bei Filtersweeps kein Aliasing entsteht. Viele Filter lassen daher entweder weniger Resonanz zu oder öffnen sich nicht ganz, damit die Grenze zum Aliasing (halbe Samplefrequenz) nicht überschritten wird. Filtersweeps mit solchen Filtern sind zwar brauchbar, aber weniger lebendig. Das Filter erzeugt die Resonanzen und Verzerrungen, die man sich so sehr von Filtern wünscht. Die Filterresonanz kann voll aufgedreht werden, Sweeps können aliasingfrei, auch über die halbe Samplefrequenz hinaus, erzeugt werden. Filter FM, mit all den Seitenbändern die entstehen, ist ebenso möglich. Auch die Hüllkurven des MINIMAX müssen sich vor ihren analogen Vorbildern nicht mehr verstecken. Sie sind nicht nur schnell, sondern exakt dem Verhalten des Originals angepasst. Auch wenn bei der Entwicklung des Minimax Originaltreue oberstes Ziel war, so wurden dennoch ein paar Erweiterungen eingebaut. Die Hüllkurven haben eine einstellbare Velocity, das Triggerverhalten der Hüllkurven lässt sich umschalten und die damals übliche Low-Note-Priority lässt sich auf Last-Note-Priority umschalten. Ausserdem lässt sich Der MINIMAX polyphon spielen und kann somit Klangwelten erobern, die mit einem monophonen Synthesizer alleine nicht möglich sind. Die auffälligste Erweiterung ist wohl die Effektsektion, die sich aber komplett abschalten lässt, um den Originalklang zu erhalten. Die Liebe zum Detail findet sich auch in der Oberfläche wieder. Die Bedienelemente wurden speziell angepasst, so dass das Regelverhalten dem Original entspricht. Falls Sie noch Sound Sheets haben, so können Sie diese auf den MINIMAX übertragen und endlich speichern. Viel Spaß mit dem MINIMAX wünscht Ihnen Ihr Creamware-Team! 35

36 Erste Schritte Anschluss des Netzteils Um die Klangbox mit Netzspannung zu versorgen, stecken Sie bitte das beiliegende Netzteil in die Steckdose. Verbinden Sie dann das Netzteil mit der Netzbuchse Ihres Gerätes. Bitte achten Sie vor dem ersten Gebrauch auf die Kompatibilität des Netzteils zu Ihrem Stromnetz. Bei Verlust des Netzteils kann ein Standard AC oder DC 12V Netzteil mit 1.5 A verwendet werden. Der Anschluss des Netzteils an die Klangbox erfolgt über einen Hohlstecker (5.5mm x 2.1mm x 11,5mm, centerpositiv). MIDI Verbindung Um die Klangbox über MIDI spielen zu können, stehen Ihnen zwei Möglichkeiten zur Verfügung: 1. Das Gerät wird direkt an ein Masterkeyboard angeschlossen. 2. Das Gerät wird an den MIDI-Port Ihres Computers angeschlossen, um die Klangbox in Verbindung mit einem Sequencer und der Remote-Software nutzen zu können. Verbinden Sie hierzu die MIDI-Ein- und Ausgänge des mit den MIDI Ein- und Ausgängen Ihres Keyboards bzw. Computers. Dabei muss der Eingang der Klangbox mit dem Ausgang Ihres Sequencer/ Keyboards verbunden werden. Mit der gelben MIDI LED können Sie feststellen, ob am MIDI-Eingang anliegende Daten den in der Klangbox eingestellten MIDI-Kanal aufweisen. Daten die an den DSP gesendet werden erzeugen ein kurzes aufleuchten der LED. 36

37 Den Ausgang der Klangbox verbinden Sie bitte mit dem Eingang Ihres Sequencers/Keyboards. Soll das eingehene MIDI-Signal noch an ein anderes Gerät weitergeleitet werden, so verbinden Sie bitte auch MIDI Thru. Steht Ihnen kein MIDI-Port zur Verfügung, so können Sie alternativ auch den USB-Port Ihres Computers verwenden. Audio Verbindung Um das Audiosignal der Klangbox abzuhören, verbinden Sie die Stereo Ausgänge mit den Audio- Eingängen Ihres Mischpultes, Computers oder Ihrer HiFi Anlage. Um für die Klangerzeugung der Klangbox auch externe Signale nutzen zu können, verbinden Sie bitte auch den Audio-Eingang der Klangbox mit einer beliebigen Klangquelle. Netzschalter Bitte schalten Sie den Netzschalter ein, um die Klangbox in Betrieb zu nehmen. Die blaue Power-LED wird dann leuchten. Sie zeigt den Betriebszustand an. USB Verbindung und Treiberinstallation (Windows XP) Um die Klangbox auch ohne MIDI-Interface in Verbindung mit einem Computer nutzen zu können, wurde ein USB-Anschluss integriert. Für diese Funktion wird eine Installation von Windows XP TM mit Service Pack 2 benötigt. Nach dem Anschliessen an Ihren Computer wird Windows XP Ihrer Klangbox als USB-Audio-Gerät erkennen. Für dieses Gerät werden keine weiteren Treiber benötigt. Sie können also sofort mit dem Spielen loslegen! Nach dem Starten Ihres Sequencers (wie z.b. Cubase SX ) steht Ihnen der USB-Audiogerät Treiber als MIDI-Port zur Verfügung. In seltenen Fällen kann es passieren, dass eine ältere Version von Windows XP (vor Service Pack 2) den USB Port nach dem Entfernen Ihres Gerätes nicht wieder frei gibt. In diesem Fall starten Sie bitte WindowsXP neu. Nach dem Neustart steht Ihnen der USB-Port wieder zur Verfügung. 37

38 Installation der Remote-Software Um die Remote-Software zu installieren, legen Sie bitte die CD mit der Aufschrift Klangbox in das CD-Laufwerk Ihres Computers. Öffnen Sie den Ordner Minimax und starten sie bitte die Anwendung Minimax Klangbox 3.3K.exe manuell mittels Doppelklick von der CD. Bestätigen Sie den angezeigten "Willkommen zur Installation" Dialog bitte mit "Next" Im folgenden Dialog bestätigen Sie bitte die Anerkenntnis der Lizenzbedingungen mit "I agree with the...", wählen Sie dann "Next". Den Installationspfad der Remote-Software können Sie im Dialog "Directory" einstellen. Standardmässig wird diese in das Verzeichnis z.b. "C:\Programme\CreamWare\MINIMAX 3.3K" installiert, der hierfür erforderliche Speicherplatz beträgt etwa 6.0 MB. Im "Startmenü-Ordner auswählen" haben Sie die Möglichkeit, den Ordner für den Startmenü-Eintrag selbst zu bestimmen. Im folgenden Dialog haben Sie noch einmal die Möglichkeit, die von Ihnen vorgenommenen Einstellungen zu überprüfen. Wählen Sie "Start" um den Kopiervorgang zu starten. Bestätigen Sie nun den End Dialog durch Klick auf den Button Exit. 38

39 Das Aufrufen der Presets Die Nummer des gewählten internen Presets der Klangbox kann einfach über ein externes Keyboard oder eine ein angeschlossenes Programm mit MIDI Bank Select und MIDI Program Change geändert werden. Program Change Bank 0 selektiert die erste Bank (Factory Bank) udn Bank 1 adressiert die zweite interne Bank (User Bank). Wenn eine Bank selektiert ist, können Sie mit Program Change die einzelnen Presets ansteuern. Grundeinstellung ist die Factory Bank. 39

40 Die Remote Software Allgemeines Um die Klangbox durch die Remote-Software steuern zu können, muss die Klangbox über USB oder MIDI mit dem Computer verbunden sein. Da beim ersten Start der notwendige MIDI-Treiber noch nicht eingestellt ist, kommt es zu Fehlermeldungen. Quittieren Sie diese mit OK und stellen Sie auf der Prefs-Page den verwendeten Treiber und den MIDI-Kanal für Ein- und Ausgang ein. Der USB-Treiber der Klangbox erscheint als USB Audiogerät. Klikken Sie nun auf Refresh, woraufhin die Seriennummer und die Softwareversionen des Gerätes angezeigt werden. Durch das Schließen der Software werden die Einstellungen gespeichert. Aufbau der Oberfläche In der Remote-Software stehen Ihnen 3 verschiedene Seiten zur Verfügung. Die Main-Page mit den gerätetypischen Funktionen, die Add-Page mit zusätzlichen Effekten und erweiterten Einstellungen, sowie die Prefs-Page mit allen Informationen zu Systemeinstellungen. Desweiteren steht Ihnen zur Verfügung: der Preset-Dialog, MIDI-Monitor und ein MIDI-Keyboard. 40

41 MAIN Page CONTROLLERS In dieser Sektion werden allgemeine Einstellungen zum Gerät und zu den Modulationshilfen vorgenommen. Tune Mit diesem Regler verändern Sie die Tonhöhe des gesamten Instruments. Der Wertebereich beträgt +/- 2.5 Halbtöne. Glide On Aktiviert die Glidefunktion. Ist Glide eingeschaltet, werden aufeinanderfolgende Noten von einem Ton in den nächsten fliessend überführt. Und zwar mit der unter Glide (siehe nächster Punkt) eingestellten Zeit. Glide Zeit, mit der aufeinanderfolgende Noten, von einem Ton in den nächsten überführt werden. Stellen Sie die Zeit mit dem Regler ein. Modulation Mix Hier wird das Mischungsverhältnis von Oszillator 3 und Noise eingestellt. Das resultierende Signal dient als Modulationsquelle für Oscillator Bank und Filter. Damit Sie das Ergebnis hören können, müssen die Modulationen eingeschaltet und die Intensität für das Modulationsrad entsprechend eingestellt sein. Decay On Schaltet die Decay-Zeiten der Hüllkurven auf den Release. Die Releasezeiten werden von den Decay-Reglern mitgesteuert. Ist Decay abgeschaltet, wird mit minimalem Release gearbeitet. 41

42 OSCILLATOR BANK Die Oscillator Bank beinhaltet drei Oszillatoren. Jeder Oszillator besitzt die Möglichkeit zum Einstellen der Oktavlage und der Wellenform. Oszillator 2 und 3 können zusätzlich über Frequenz- Regler verstimmt werden. Da Oszillator 3 auch als Modulationsquelle dient, lässt er sich von der Frequenzeingabe des Keyboards trennen. Der Oszillator verhält sich dann wie ein LFO, dessen Geschwindigkeit über Range und Frequency eingestellt wird. Über einen Schalter kann die Tonhöhen-Modulation der Oszillator-Sektion aktiviert werden. Ein LFO dient als Modulationsquelle und kann Parameter wie z.b. Cutoff regeln. Da der Oszillator 3 aber wesentlich schneller modulieren kann als ein LFO (Low Frequency Oscillator) ist die Bezeichnung LFO im Prinzip falsch. Range Wählen Sie hier die Oktavlage des Oszillators. Es gibt die Einstellungen Lo, 32, 16, 8, 4 und 2. Die Werte 32 und 16 eignen sich für Bässe, 8 und 4 sind gut für Lead-Sounds und wenn sie Oszillator 3 als LFO einsetzen wollen, dann wählen sie den Wert Lo. Waveform Wählen Sie hier die Wellenform des Oszillators. Für jeden Oszillator stehen sechs Wellenformen zur Auswahl. Dies sind die Wellenformen: Triangle, eine Mischung aus Sägezahn und Triangle, aufsteigender Sägezahn, Square, weiter Pulse und enger Pulse. Als Besonderheit besitzt Oszillator 3 statt der Mischung aus Triangle und Sägezahn einen abfallenden Sägezahn. Frequency Verstimmen Sie hier Oszillator 2 und 3 gegen Oszillator 1. Die Skalierung zeigt die Verstimmung in Intervallen (Halbtonschritte) an. Die maximale Verstimmung beträgt etwa 9 Halbtöne. 42
