1 Pike Central High School GERMAN I 2040 (GER I) German I, a course based on Indiana s Academic Standards for World Languages, introduces students to effective strategies for beginning German language learning, and to various aspects of German-speaking culture. This course encourages interpersonal communication through speaking and writing, providing opportunities to make and respond to basic requests and questions, understand and use appropriate greetings and forms of address, participate in brief guided conversations on familiar topics, and write short passages with guidance. This course also emphasizes the development of reading and listening comprehension skills, such as reading isolated words and phrases in a situational context and comprehending brief written or oral directions. Additionally, students will examine the practices, products and perspectives of German-speaking culture; recognize basic routine practices of the target culture; and recognize and use situation-appropriate nonverbal communication. This course further emphasizes making connections across content areas and the application of understanding German language and culture outside of the classroom. Recommended Grade Level: 9, 10, 11, 12 Recommended Prerequisites: none Credits: 2 semester course, 1 credit per semester Counts as a Directed Elective or Elective for all diplomas Fulfills a World Language requirement for the Core 40 with Academic Honors diploma REQUIREMENTS The text books, Netzwerk A1 Gesamtband and Netzwerk A1 Arbeitsbuch are required reading. The Glossary will be distributed in class. The syllabus indicates the pace at which the course progresses. Students must have prepared the chapters, especially the vocabulary ahead of time to be able to participate in the classroom exercises, group work, and conversations. Active in-class participation constitutes a major part of the final grade. Therefore diligent note taking is not only mandatory but also a practical skill for review after class EVERY DAY and inevitable for test preparation. (812) ext. 482 ASSESSMENT The syllabus tells you specifically which items to prepare for from day to day. In the interest of continuous learning, you are required to prepare the material before each period. No graded work will be accepted after the due date noted on the schedule or stated in class. 1. Ring binder and daily notes As the material is to be read/reviewed prior to its discussion in class, Vocabulary Quizzes can be administered without notice. Chapter Tests and Projects will always be announced and explained before they are given. Project grades will receive a grade for the written part and also for its video. The video must be submitted on a data carrier readable by a school computer (memory stick, DVD). It is therefore mandatory that you test the stored video for its readability, sound, and picture quality before you submit it. Videos stored on cell phones, IPods etc. will not be accepted. Online translators for entire phrases and sentences are not permitted. If usage is discovered, related work will be disqualified. You will have to re-do the work before the established deadline or receive an F. An unannounced materials check will occur once per grading period (4 times total), worth 100 points each. These points cannot be made up. You will receive a weekly grade for your participation. Participation is graded according to the following guidelines: A: You participate actively in free conversation without waiting to be called on. You have prepared grammar and content exercises well at home and almost always communicate correctly. You converse in German as much as you can in both class contributions and group work. B: You wait to be called on in free conversation, but then respond. You have prepared grammar and content exercises at home and usually communicate correctly. You speak mostly German in both class contributions and group work and only occasionally rely on English. C: You wait to be called on in free conversation, are sometimes unable to respond, and frequently rely on English. You have not prepared well and only sometimes communicate correctly. D: You hardly ever speak German and instead mostly rely on English in both class contributions and group work. F: You do not contribute and when called on respond incorrectly 2

Any assignment that is determined to have been plagiarized will receive a 0 without the opportunity to make it up. Work Checklist Vocabulary/Lernwortschatz. Learn and review vocabulary daily. Read the words aloud and learn all articles, plurals, and verb forms by heart. A good way to help you in this is to write the words on index cards. There is going to be a vocabulary test each week. 10

11 Reading and Preparedness. Prepare the course content for each lesson in advance. If you do not know words, look them up in your dictionary. If things are unclear, ask your classmates, your professor, or come to class with questions. Participation. Actively participate in both class conversations and group work. Your participation will be evaluated continuously and counts for about 25% of your final grade. Grammar Review. You will find grammar overviews in the textbook. Review grammar weekly and come to class with questions. Workbook Assignments. Work with your workbook daily and do the assignments on Canvas. All Canvas assignments are due each Friday at 6 PM (later submissions will not be accepted). 11
