2 BACKGROUND INFORMATION Feeling Face Form On the trails of Susanne Schmida By accident the artist group FeinSinn came across the heritage of Dr. Susanne Schmida ( ). This - along with other items - contained photographs, manuscripts, sketches, tape-recordings and music for the piano, all these being pieces that combined to form the base and starting point of "Gefühl, Gesicht, Gestalt" (Feeling, Face, Form). Susanne Schmida counts among the few women in the Austrian dance and gymnastics scene in the twenties and thirties of the twentieth century who turned their backs on National Socialism - Schmida's reasons not just stemming from the fact that she was married to a man of Jewish origin. of her own school for dance and yoga, teaching philosophical contents in her classes as well. Thus she guided many students through a several years' training of dance and gymnastics, the end of the training being the "initiation". The performance of about 60 minutes, danced by Sieglinde Gerold, Wolfgang Kühn (two former students of Susanne Schmida) and Elke Pichler, shows reconstructions of "Raumlinien Gymnastik" (space-lines gymnastics), a work by Susanne Schmida, which theoretically corroborates her way of dancing instruction. The piece also bears reference to the dance and gymnastics roots of the Schmida School - the Loheland School. The performance is completed with an exhibition of documents, sheet music and photos from the heritage, as well as historic background information. As one of the first women in Austria Susanne Schmida received her Doctor of Philosophy. She studied Gymnastics and Dance at the Loheland teacher Hilde Hager. She devoted her life to the organization and management The music is by Christoph Willibald Gluck, Frederic Chopin, Erik Satie, Dimitri Schostakowitsch, Hans Dokupil and Alexander Nantschev. All pieces are played live by Alexander Nantschev and Oswald Ruttner (a former Susanne Schmida pianist). Furthermore, surviving original taperecordings of Susanne Schmida's lessons from the seventies are incorporated. "For Mrs Dr. Susanne Schmida who, through her way, took me to my way." ADDITIONAL ACTIVITIES FeinSinn also offers discussions with the audience after the show, music and dance workshops as well as a concert by the FeinSinn band to accompany the performance and enhance your audience s experience. In Addition to the performance it is possible to organize an exhibition with original photos and texts of the heritage of Susanne Schmida. If any or all of the above is an option for you, we are happy to discuss the details with you. HOSPITALITY RIDER Catering at the venue Hot meal for lunch for every person travelling, 1 with special vegetarian diet Still mineral water for rehearsals and performance Accommodation The artists will travel to venue 2 days before the show, to accommodate for one day rehearsal and setup time. They will therefore need accommodation for 3 nights: hotel single rooms for three persons travelling and one double room have to be provided, at least *** category, including breakfast. Requirements at the venue An area for musicians and dancers to warm up has to be available. This area must neither be viewable nor accessible by the audience. At least one lockable room where artists can keep their personal belongings during rehearsal, warmup and the performance has to be available. The key to this room has to be given to the artist and will be returned after the performance. 4

5 TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS Stage requirements The required dimensions of the stage are 10m wide x 8m deep. A black dance carpet is preferred, although not mandatory, as long as the floor can be danced on with bare feet and is not too cold. A white backdrop is covering the rear wall of the stage is preferred, although not mandatory as long as the rear wall is in the color of white. 9 ARTIST S PROFILES About FeinSinn Cie. FeinSinn was founded in the year 2003 by Elke Pichler and Alexander Nantschev. Elke Pichler and Alexander Nantschev work mainly in the field of dance- and musicperformance with video-art. Their projects were subsidized by the city of Vienna, Upper-Austria and the government of Austria. They played in important theatres and stages like Wuk, Dschungel Vienna, Tanzquartier Vienna, Leopoldmuseum, Urania Vienna, Schl8hof Wels, CCL, Theatermuseum Vienna or Opera Graz, Festspielhaus St. Pölten, Expedithalle der ehemaligen Ankerbrotfabrik, Festivals in Beijing and Hangzhou/China. Elke Pichler Grown up in Upper Austria; spent part of her studies in Barcelona; took up studies of Philosophy, French, Spanish; passed the first part of her studies with distinction; took up study of pedagogics for modern dance at the conservatoire in Vienna; in 2003 passed her degree with distinction; subsequent studies at the private university conservatoire in Vienna; passed her degree as Bachelor of Arts. Activities as performing artist - among others - for Doris Uhlich, dance theatre Humunculus, Bregenz Festival (Renato Zanella), dance quarters Vienna, Vienna Konzerthaus, Jeunesse. Constantly put a focus on a synthesis of dance/performance and music, not the least reason for this being her extensive education in music (piano, transverse flute, singing education). 18 Press (Excerpt) Feeling Face Form Dance, Yoga, Philosophy: An Hommage to A Pioneer By her detour of the study of philosophy the dancer and choreographer Elke Pichler came across Susanne Schmida ( ), who gained her doctorate as the first female philosopher in Vienna, who also founded the first school of yoga in Austria. At this stillexisting Institute Dr. Schmida in the Lehargasse she taught a distinct mixture of dance, philosophy and yoga. It was there that Pichler discovered Schmida=s legacy, on the basis of which she choreographed the dance and music performance ΑFeeling, Face, Form - with the aid of former students, who also participated in the project. 19 Österreich TANZT St. Pölten 2012 Feeling-Face-Form Elke Pichler has set up an exceptional platform. The artist follows the trail of dancer Susanne Schmida who in the 30s of the last century had based her dancing instruction theoretically on the idea of Raumliniengymnastik (space-lines gymnastics). Chance plays a major role in the emergence of the impressive piece Feeling Face Form. 19

20 Not only that Pichler with her Company FeinSinn has come across Schmida s estate by chance, FeinSinn is a multi-disciplinary group of artists whose core is a band who accompanied the performance in the Festspielhaus St. Pölten co-acting and playing. Moreover, the choreographer has also found two students of Schmida (Sieglinde Gerold, Wolfgang Kuehn) remembering Schmida s dance while Pichler translated and commented the will and work of expressionist dancer Schmida into today s reality. She did so with a clever sense of humour, sensitivity and refreshing distance. Moreover, even knowing well that the young audience may have little idea of Susanne Schmida. Video recordings, sections of text being quoted live and the reconstruction of movements of the space-lines gymnastics give an interesting insight into the work of dancer Susanne Schmida. The dancer Elke Pichler suggests - in a fascinating duet with a table - the bridge to the present. In white light the shadows of the moving bodies draw sharp lines an invitation to dream, to escape from reality. Nothing there. One is riding the scooter around the stage. You are welcome to laugh. Memory, even honour to Schmida succeeds without pathos. 20
