4 2015 GM #44 CALGARY AT SASKATCHEWAN GAME NOTES CFL NOTES & TRENDS The Canadian Football League The CFL was formed on January 19, 1958 creating a unified game in the East and West. That merger has continued a long football history in Canada and since the IRFU began back in 1907 (and the WIFU in 1936), this will be regular season game #: 5, CFL TRENDS & HIGHLIGHTS THROUGH WEEK #8: Defence Re-Emerges: Week #8 was a great week for the defence for most teams as net offence averaged only a combined 561 yards per game the lowest average yards allowed per game in any week since Here are some examples last week: - In a stretch of 7 drives, Edmonton limited Montreal to MINUS one yard. - Winnipeg held Toronto to just 72 yards of offence in the second half but lost on the strength of an Argo punt return TD. - Edmonton held Montreal to 2-of-17 on 2nd down conversions (12%) including their first 13 chances. They went 2-&-out 11 times. - Hamilton started by forcing BC into 5 straight 2-&-outs and 36 net yards on BC s first 7 possessions. - Hamilton had 3 return TDs vs BC including pick six #6 leaving them now only one short of the CFL record of 7 (Toronto: 2006) Long-range Field Goals: Last year, only three clubs made a 50+ yard field goal. In 2015, six teams have already at least one. From 50+ yards in 2015, CFL kickers are 11-of-14 for a 78.6% mark. What is REALLY odd is that from yards they are only 32-of-46 for 69.6%. In 2014, there were only 14 tries from 50+ yards made in 81 games and just 7 were made for 50%. Penalties Update to Week #8: With only 75 penalties, Week #8 averaged just 18.8 calls per game. That is the lowest of the 2015 season and lower than any total from the first 8 weeks of The cumulative penalty average year-to-date dropped for the 7th straight week to per game. Red Zone Defence vs Winning: The Top 4 Red Zone Defences in the CFL (Edmonton, Toronto, Calgary and Ottawa) have a combined TD% allowed rate of 46% and a W-L record of They have turned back more than half of the opposition chances inside the 20-yard line. The remaining clubs are at 60% only in Red Zone Defence with a W-L record. Hamilton s Starts: Hamilton has started fast for the 2nd consecutive week with 21-0 margins after the 1st Quarter. It was only the second time in 107 years of our history that any team had ever had consecutive leads of 21+ points after 15:00 of play. Only Winnipeg in August 1994 with 21-0 and 25-0 leads in back-to-back weeks at the end of the 1st Quarter had ever achieved that. QB Sacks / Drives with Sacks: Last week there were 34 sacks, the most in any week in Updating the number of drives where a club allowed a sack: now up to 154 possessions with at least one QS allowed and only 3 TDs made on them (1.9% TD rate). QB Sacks Doubled: CFL QB Sacks per game Weeks #1-6: 4.1 per game; Weeks #7-8: 8.1, almost twice as many Converts Analysis: The run of consecutive 1-point converts made took a hit last week as after making 41 in a row, CFL kickers made only 13-of-19 attempts. Six of the seven kickers who had an attempt missed one so it was virtually across the board. For the year, the success rate dropped from 87% and rising back down to 84%. RESULTS TO WK #8 Att Md Pct DECISIONS Tot Freq ONE-POINT (32 yds) ONE-POINT ATTEMPTS % TWO-POINT (3 yds) POINT ATTEMPTS (Non-OT) 29 19% 2-Point Converts: The convert choices made by teams has taken a very odd turn in the last 3 weeks with kicks dominating. Despite the 73% two-point success rate, in the last 12 games teams have elected to kick after 50 of the 54 touchdowns scored, or about 8% of the time going for two. That sounds a lot like the 6.4% election rate for two-point converts in 2014 (23 of 359). 2nd down conversions dropping: In the first six weeks, CFL clubs converted at 49.8% far above last season s all-time low of just 42.2%. Defences are catching up now and over the last two weeks the conversion rate has been just 41.7%. 100 Games Started Milestone: Career starts #100 ahead: Calgary s Juwan Simpson, Montreal s S.J. Green and Toronto s Dave Stala are each one start away from 100 GS, Keon Raymond and Ricky Foley made career start #100 last week. Taking More Penalties 1 win in 4: Out of 32 winning teams in 2015, only 8 of them took more penalties than their opponents (25%). Looking at it the other way, the losing club has taken more penalties 18 times so far (6 games were even).

CFL TRENDS & HIGHLIGHTS THROUGH WEEK #8: Punting remains Up: The average punt in the CFL this season is 45.4 yards, up a full yard from last season. But that s not the only story as last week as punters trapped opponents inside the 20-yard line 20 times and inside the 10 on 8 occasions. Calgary s Rob Maver had a spectacular week vs Ottawa with THREE punts out of bounds inside the 10-yard line (10, 1 & 1 yard lines) and another which was fumbled at the Ottawa 6. Third Down Gambles: Results in 3rd-and-1 situations this season have shown a marked change from the last few years with a much lower success rate. The trend shows a drop from 84% success rate in 2013 to just 63% in 2015: YEAR GP Atts Made Miss Pct % % % Plenty of QBs: Last week, 15 different quarterbacks ran at least one possession week highlighting the need for depth at that position. With the debut start of Winnipeg s Robert Marve, in 2015 there have been 14 different QBs start at least one game. TEAM NOTES & TRENDS SASKATCHEWAN VS CALGARY: Last week vs Ottawa: The highlights of their 45-point win over Ottawa included a +5 turnover margin, three of which came off of Ottawa special teams giveaways. Calgary all three kick return T/Os into scores (21 points). They also scored a season-high 5 offensive TDs and registered a season-high 5 sacks. Field position vs Ottawa: The other key in the win over Ottawa was incredible field position. Calgary started 9 DRIVES inside Ottawa territory and scored 3 TDs and 3 FGs from those possessions. The CFL has tracked drive results by starting point since 2011 and that total of 9 matches only one other time at 9 BC on Sep 27/13 vs WPG. Eric Rogers 5 in a row: The Stamps leading receiver now has touchdowns in 5 consecutive games. The last player to score a receiving TD in at least 6 games in a row was Weston Dressler at the end of Dressler is also the last to record a TD of any kind in at least 6 straight games. Calgary 100+ rushing yards: The Stampeders are winning in a different way than last year with 1,917 of their 2,520 total yards coming via the pass (76%). Last year only 62% of their yards were via the pass as they led the CFL in rushing. They rushed for 100+ yards in 16 of 18 games in 2014 but this year have done it only once (Jul 18/15 vs Wpg). A Big win: Calgary s win by 45 points over Ottawa last week was their largest since a 52-5 win over Edmonton on Sep 6/10. It was the sixth largest ever margin of victory for the Stampeders. Turnover Turnaround from #8 to #3: Calgary started the year with 14 turnovers in their first 5 games and were at -6 (Ranked #8 then). Since then they have been +8 without a turnover and are now up to #3 at +2. Keeping Opponents Out of the Red Zone: In the last 5 games, there have been only 5 drives on which Calgary opponents have gotten inside the 20-yard line (one per game). Calgary schedule: This game will be only the Stampeders second divisional contest of 2015 and begins a run of 6 consecutive games against Western rivals. They are 1-0 against the West in Two-&-Outs in a Row: The. Calgary forced Ottawa into 11 straight 2-&-outs and 11 consecutive incomplete passes in their 48-3 win last week. SSK - 5 losses by 4 points or less matches most ever: Saskatchewan has lost 5 games in 2015 by margins of 4 points or less. This total of 5 ties the all-time Saskatchewan record set at 5 times in both 1948 and The all-time CFL record was set BC in 1996 when they lost 7 times by 1-4 point margins. Saskatchewan 2 Takeaways a record low: The Riders have just 2 takeaways this year (one interception and one on downs). The all-time CFL season-low is held by Edmonton in 2006 with 25. Saskatchewan will have to create 2.1 opponent turnovers per game the rest of the way just to reach that mark this year. Saskatchewan s Injured List 626 career starts: Looking at their Week #7 roster provides some insight into Saskatchewan s 0-7 record. They had 15 players sit out the Aug 8/15 loss to Toronto who have a combined 927 games of prior CFL experience. In those players, Saskatchewan was missing a total of 626 career starts almost half as many as the 46-man roster that were active. A good comparison can be made to BC s roster last week just 7 players on the IL with a combined 55 career starts. Brett Smith: Led the Riders at QB last time out with a very good performance passing for 298 yards throwing his first two CFL TD passes. His passer rating went up to 99.5 that game compared to a rating of 46.0 in his starting debut game. Last time at 0-7 and 0-8: The Riders were last at 0-7 in 1979 when they started off One of the key factors that led to the 0-12 start in 1979 was the retirement at the end of the previous season of HOF QB great Ron Lancaster. Lancaster had started all but 5 of the 224 games from 1965 to Across Saskatchewan used 6 different starting QBs. None at 0-7: The Riders are still in with a chance being only 3 wins back of BC and Winnipeg heading into Week #9 and with three head-to-head games against those rivals.
