5 Lektion 1 Track 40 Zum Lesen 1 CAPL By Michael Shaughnessy & Jason Parkhill Her sehen wir Karin und ein Foto ihrer Wohnung. Karin wohnt in Wilhelmshaven in Norddeutschland. "Ich wohne in einer Hafenstadt an der Nordsee. Unsere Wohnung ist nicht weit von der Stadtmitte, was sehr praktisch ist. Man braucht nur fünf Minuten zu gehen,und dann ist man schon in der Fußgängerzone, wo die meisten Geschäfte sind. Die Wohnung ist aber auch nicht weit vom Strand entfernt. Da gehen wir oft spazieren. Es gibt auch viele schöne Parks. Ich wohne in der Nähe eines Parks. In der Mitte des Parks ist ein Ententeich. Unsere Stadt ist manchmal "die grüne Stadt am Meer" genannt. Es gibt ungefähr Einwohner - eine relativ kleine Stadt also." Hier sehen wir Peter und ein Foto seines Hauses.. Peter wohnt auf dem Lande. "Ich wohne auf einer Farm ungefähr 18 Kilometer außerhalb der Stadt Armidale. Armidale liegt in den Bergen etwa 800 Kilometer nördlich der Stadt Sydney in Neusüdwales. Unser Haus liegt in der Nähe eines Flusses. Das Haus ist ziemlich alt aber sehr bequem. Meine Familie hat immer hier gewohnt. Das Land um uns herum ist sehr schön, und die Gegend ist ruhig. Ich wohne gern auf dem Lande - es gibt ja immer etwas zu tun. GMB HSC Unit 5 5

8 Two-way prepositions. Before you begin the next Schriftliche Übung, Wer wohnt wo?, please study the following notes on two-way prepositions. In the Preliminary Course the nominative and accusative case were introduced. You learned that the subject of the verb in a sentence is in the nominative case and the object of a verb in a sentence is in the accusative case. You also learned about prepositions that are followed by either the accusative or dative case. Prepositions that take either the dative or the accusative case are often referred to as two-way prepositions. Prepositions such as in, neben, auf and über, are followed by the accusative when they show movement towards a new place. They are followed by the dative case when they show rest or movement within a place. Look at these sentences: Er geht in die Küche he is going into the kitchen. Er ist in der Küche he is in the kitchen. Ich stelle die Blumen auf den Tisch I put the flowers on the table. Die Blumen stehen auf dem Tisch the flowers are on the table. gehen (to go) and stellen (to place/ put) indicate that someone or something is changing location from one place to another and in German the case after the preposition then reflects this. The flowers were in my hand but they are now being placed onto the table (auf den Tisch). He was outside the kitchen but now he is in the kitchen. He has moved into the kitchen (in die Küche). These examples use the accusative case. sein (to be) and stehen (to stand) indicate that someone or something is located within or at a particular place, and again, the case after the German preposition reflects this. (he has been inside the kitchen all along. (in der Küche) The flowers are standing in a vase presumably- on the table. (auf dem Tisch) These examples use the dative case. As you learn new prepositions, always learn the case that they take as well. e.g. From the previous page you know that außerhalb outside of always requires the genitive case. You may also remember that the commonly used prepositions von (from/of) and mit (with) are always followed by the dative case. In the following Schriftliche Übung you will use the dative case after the two-way prepositions in and neben because they show rest or movement within a place. They indicate the current location of something or someone. You will also use von which is always followed by the dative case. GMB HSC Unit 5 8

15 Lektion 4 Tracks 55 and 56 Practising the dative case Before you begin Schriftliche Aufgabe 1, here are some notes about weil. Subordinating conjunctions: weil, wenn In Unit 3, Lektion 4 you learned to join two sentences using the subordinating conjunction wenn. Es regnet am Wochenende. + Ich bin ärgerlich. Ich bin ärgerlich, wenn es am Wochende regnet. I m annoyed when it rains on the weekend. Wenn die Sonne scheint, spiele ich samstags Tennis. If it is sunny I play tennis on Saturdays. Note: If the wenn clause begins the sentence (as often happens in German because information about time frequently comes first), then the whole wenn clause is considered to be the first idea. The time phrase ( here a whole clause) will as usual be followed immediately by the verb. Wenn die Sonne scheint, spiele ich samstags Tennis. Another such conjunction is weil, meaning because. Again we can join two sentences, this time using the subordinating conjunction weil. For example: Es regnet am Wochenende + Ich bin ärgerlich. Ich bin ärgerlich, weil es am Wochende regnet. I m annoyed because it is raining on the weekend Subordinating conjunctions such as wenn and weil combine sentences, or parts of sentences, into a single compound sentence. Having completed the exercises in Unit 3 Lektion 4, you will have noted that wenn has an effect on the word order of the clause (sentence part) that follows it. That is, wenn sends the verb to the end of the sentence (or clause). weil does the same. The word order is: Subordinating conjunction + subject + (other sentence parts) + VERB he subordinated clause is always separated from the main clause by a comma. Look at these examples: Ich bin glücklich, weil ich morgen Geburtstag habe. I m happy because it is my birthday tomorrow. Ich komme nicht mit, weil ich zu viele Hasuaufgaben habe. I m not coming because I have too much homework. Thema 10 of Ganz Genau! also explains weil, wenn and other subordinating conjunctions. GMB HSC Unit 5 15

In the first sentence you should state where they live. In the second sentence state their opinion about where they live and then, beginning with weil, state one advantage or disadvantage of living there that they have mentioned. Zum Beispiel: Maikes Haus liegt in einem Vorort am Stadtrand. Sie wohnt da nicht gern, weil die Verbindungen schlecht sind. Ludgers Haus liegt in der Nähe vom Wald. Sie heißen Manfred, Peter und Günther. Sie nerven mich manchmal aber meistens sind sie OK. Ich bin normalerweise ziemlich ausgeglichen, aber wenn meine Brüder mich ärgern, werde ich sarkastisch. Am liebsten trage ich Jeans und einen Pullover. Ich wohne in Kating. Das ist eine ziemlich große Stadt, die nicht weit von den Bergen und auch nicht weit vom Meer liegt.
