Course Objectives After successfully completing Introductory German 1, you should be able to communicate in both oral and written form with native German-speakers at a basic level, what might also be called the "tourist level." You will be able to participate in conversations that include introducing yourself, discussing your family and friends, and describing your daily activities. You will also develop survival techniques, such as ordering in a restaurant, asking for the time, and asking for directions. Because successful communication also requires cultural understanding, you will also come to recognize many of the similarities and differences between the lives of Americans and German-speaking peoples. You should use Moodle several times each Beginning German 1 1

2 week to participate in discussions and wikis, to download and turn in assignments, to find additional practice materials and resources, and to find course announcements and due dates. Google Voice: Several times during the course of the semester, you will have oral assignments that require you to call my Google Voice telephone number ( ) and leave a message. You may call from any telephone and do not need any special equipment or account. Methods of Instruction German will be the language of instruction. You cannot learn to converse in a language unless you use it. It is normal for this to feel uncomfortable and difficult at first, but you will quickly reap the benefits. The textbook publisher offers an English/German glossary that contains vocabulary, grammar and cultural explanations in English. It is recommended that you read these explanations BEFORE you come to class; doing so will make you feel more confident and better able to participate. In-class participation is crucial. In-class activities will include partner and small-group activities that are designed to give you as many opportunities as possible to practice using German in conversational settings. Your presence and willingness to participate are vital to your success. Students with repeated absences risk failing the course. Out of class activities are varied and will help develop your linguistic skills and cultural understanding. Activities will include discussion forums about German culture, oral recordings, written assignments, projects, and workbook activities. Notice for Students with Disabilities Any student with a documented disability needing academic adjustments or accommodations is encouraged to speak with the course instructor immediately at the beginning of the semester. The student is responsible for applying for accommodations through the Office for Disability Services. All information disclosed during this process will remain confidential. Any changes will be announced in class and updated on Moodle. Evaluation Tägliche Mitarbeit For each class meeting there will be assignments you should complete. These include contributions to online discussion forums, Internet searches, short reading and writing assignments, and workbook assignments. These assignments will be posted on Moodle and will primarily be graded on effort. 20% Tägliche Quizzes Each class period will begin with a short quiz on the material learned in the previous class period and/or for homework. The quizzes will cover vocabulary, grammar and culture. 20% Aufgaben und Prüfungen For each unit there will be a culminating activity that will allow you to show what you have learned in both oral and written form. 35% Abschlussexamen The final exam will be comprehensive and will include an oral interview and a written exam. 25% Beginning German 1 3
