2 Automatic Turning Station for Transformer Core Assembly Siemens in Nuremberg, manufacturers of transformers, planned to increase their production capacity in the transformer core assembly where large transformer cores for power plants are manufactured. The previous solution, which manipulated the assembled core by means of an existing 850 t hall crane and a special traverse, needed to be replaced by a new tilting device. The originally earmarked variant consisted in transporting the empty transport pallet to the tilting device by means of the hall crane and to press it to the lying transformer core by means of a special pressing device. The tilting device consisting of a tilting table plate and a pressing device would then erect the transformer core. The order for the design, development and implementation of the complete system consisting of base frame, two tilting table plates with common rotary axis, aligning plate, devices to pick up the transformer cores as well as the entire hydraulic unit and control engineering was placed with Vollert Anlagenbau located in Weinsberg. They were able to offer a significantly improved solution compared to the tender specification. In addition to a safe handling of the erection process, the solution implemented by the experts of the medium-sized plant engineering and construction company offers the advantage that there is no need for the hall crane to move the transport pallets. 3 The Vollert tilting table is capable of erecting transformer cores for power plants at a core weight of 50 to 300 t. An air cushion vehicle moves the transport pallet onto the tilting table and places it on the tilting table plate which turns the transport pallet by 90 and then presses it against the transformer core. Both chain conveyors integrated into a tilting table plate allow a simple and exact adjustment of the required wheel base of the legs of the transformer core. 5 Apart from the very high core weight, the following obstacles when implementing the project had to be overcome by the Weinsberg conveyor technique specialists. With a span of 12 m the maximum deflection must not exceed 4 mm (!). The tilting table must be able to be moved by an air cushion vehicle. With a special hydraulic and control concept as well a a crossing point especially developed for the air cushion vehicle Vollert succeeded in meeting all the requirements. This system is unique, worldwide. The large dead weight of the tilting table of about 250 t as well as the tight schedule were additional challenges, especially for the installation and commissioning specialists. The project programme was a year; installation and commissioning was even carried out in a 12 weeks period shift operation including a fourweek trial run. The ultimate ambition of the close co-operation between customer and system contractor was as it is Vollert s company philosophy to find an exemplary solution delivering a high customer benefit. The new system enabled Siemens to reduce the erection process from one that including the necessary preparation work - originally required one shift to 45 minutes only. The customer s savings thanks to this innovative solution are tremendous. Moreover, the new system presents a significant improvement in quality of product, since the transformer core barely deforms when being raised.
