3 Summary of the thesis This Ph.D. thesis brings together four research papers. Three of them deal with the main subject of my thesis: the analysis of news data regarding their usefulness in understanding economic trends. The fourth paper (Chapter 5) addresses a health economic issue. Chapter 1 introduces the subject, Chapters 2 and 3 explore the possibility of drawing information for economic forecasting from news coverage. Chapter 4 checks if there is any direct influence of negative news reporting on companies self-assessment of their business situation. Chapter 5, although not based on news data, looks into a health economic issue that has stirred up an ongoing debate in Switzerland: the effects of drug-dispensing physicians on the market for medication. After an introductory chapter, Chapter 2 of the dissertation examines the usefulness of the so-called Recession-word index or R-word index for Switzerland in forecasting the business cycle. The R-word index is an indicator based on the count of particular keywords ( recession ) in newspaper articles. The analysis shows that the inclusion of the R-word index leads to statistically significant improvements in the forecast accuracy over an autoregressive benchmark model. Chapter 3 takes the indicator from Chapter 2 to the next level. We construct several versions of the R-word index not only for Switzerland but also for Germany. This chapter shows that augmenting benchmark autoregressive models with the R-word index generally leads to an improvement in the accuracy of one-step ahead forecasts of GDP growth compared to those obtained by a benchmark model. Furthermore, the R-word index enriched forecast models can also compete with established economic indicators in both countries, such as e.g. the ifo Business Climate xiii

4 Index. In a last step, we also compare our indices with Google Trends data, which they outperform. Chapter 4 examines the effects of daily negative news reporting on companies self-assessment of their business situation. It compares survey data in the manufacturing sector in Switzerland with thousands of newspaper articles from an online newspaper article database, which is scanned for particular keywords. We introduce a new daily indicator of the business situation and compare it to daily news data. Our regression results show a significant influence, which can be interpreted as a negative news bias, of news reporting on the self-assessment of the companies surveyed. Finally, Chapter 5 deals with a health economics topic: the influence of dispensing doctors on pharmacy usage rate in Switzerland. We enrich pharmacy level survey data with geo-spatial information to assess the effect of dispensing physicians on utilization of pharmacies while controlling for chain affiliation, opening hours, socio-economic environment of a pharmacy as well as the number of pharmacies nearby. We find that pharmacies in regions that allow physicians to dispense drugs face a decline in drug related revenue of more than 15 percent while revenue with non-drugs are almost 40 percent higher than in non-self-dispensing regions. These findings are particularly striking given that they come on top of long established, massive structural differences in the number of pharmacies per capita across regions with differing dispensation systems. xiv

5 Zusammenfassung der Dissertation Diese Dissertation versammelt vier Forschungsarbeiten. Drei davon widmen sich, wie der Titel bereits sagt, der Analyse von Mediendaten und ihrer Nützlichkeit für die Konjunkturanalyse, die vierte Arbeit beschäftigt sich mit einem gesundheitsökonomischen Thema. Die ersten zwei Analysen untersuchen die Möglichkeit, aus Mediendaten Informationen für Konjunkturprognosen zu ziehen. Die dritte Arbeit beinhaltet eine Analyse, ob die Medienberichterstattung über den Gang der Wirtschaft die Selbsteinschätzung von Firmen bezüglich ihrer Geschäftslage beeinflusst. Im Fokus der vierten Arbeit steht schliesslich ein gesundheitsökonomisches Thema, das in der Schweiz einiges an Aufmerksamkeit auf sich zieht: Die Auswirkungen der direkten Medikamentenabgabe durch Ärzte und deren Auswirkungen auf den Markt für Medikamente. Nach einem Einleitungskapitel widmet sich Kapitel 2 der Dissertation der Nützlichkeit beziehungsweise Anwendbarkeit des sogenannten Rezessionsindex (R-Wort- Index) für Konjunkturprognosen der Schweizer Wirtschaftsentwicklung. Der R- Wort-Index ist ein Indikator, der auf einer Schlagwortzählung ( Rezession ) in bestimmten Zeitungen beruht. Es lässt sich zeigen, dass die Aufnahme des R-Wort- Index in Prognosemodelle zu statistisch signifikanten Verbesserungen der Prognosegenauigkeit im Vergleich zu Benchmark-Modellen führt. Kapitel 3 hievt den in Kapitel 2 eingeführten Indikator auf eine sozusagen nächsthöhere Ebene. Verschiedene Versionen des R-Wort-Index werden für Deutschland und für die Schweiz erstellt. Es lässt sich zeigen, dass die Erweiterung einfacher xv

6 autoregressiver Prognosemodelle mit dem R-Wort-Index in der Regel zu einer Verbesserung der Genauigkeit von Ein-Schritt-Prognosen des BIP-Wachstums im Vergleich zu jenen von vergleichbaren Benchmark-Modellen führt. Zudem bestehen mit dem R-Wort-Index angereicherte Modelle den Wettbewerb mit etablierten Wirtschaftsindikatoren in beiden Ländern, wie etwa dem ifo Geschäftsklimaindex. Auch ein Vergleich mit Google Trend-Daten fällt positiv für die mit dem R-Wort-Index ergänzten Modelle aus. Kapitel 4 untersucht die Auswirkungen einer negativen Wirtschaftsberichterstattung, wiederum gemessen anhand einer weiteren Medienanalyse, auf die Selbsteinschätzung der Geschäftslage der Unternehmen im verarbeitenden Gewerbe. Die Analyse stellt Umfragedaten im Schweizer verarbeitenden Gewerbe zur Geschäftslage, die wir zu einem neuartigen Indikator auf Tagesbasis aggregieren, Tausenden von Zeitungsartikeln, die hinsichtlich bestimmter Schlagworte gescannt werden, gegenüber. Wir finden einen negativen Einfluss der Medien-Berichterstattung auf die Selbsteinschätzung der befragten Unternehmen. Schliesslich befasst sich Kapitel 5 mit einem gesundheitsökonomischen Thema: der gesundheitsdienstlichen Versorgung bei der Medikamentenabgabe durch Ärzte und Apotheken. Die Analyse untersucht die Auswirkungen der sogenannten Selbstdispensation, das heisst des Rechts von Ärzten, Medikamente direkt an Patienten abzugeben, auf die Apothekenumsätze in der Schweiz. Wir ergänzen Apotheken- Umfragedaten mit räumlichen Informationen und mit verschiedenen Kontrollvariablen, um den Effekt der Selbstdispensation auf die Nutzung von Apotheken zu messen. Unsere Analyse zeigt, dass Selbstdispensation den Umsatz und somit die Nutzung von Apotheken um 15 Prozent senkt. Gleichzeitig beginnen Apotheken damit, ihre Geschäftsstrategie anzupassen und vermehrt Nicht-Medikamente zu verkaufen. Deren Anteil liegt in Kantonen, in denen Selbstdispensation erlaubt ist, um 40 Prozent höher. Apotheken in Selbstdispensationskantonen tendieren dazu, ihren Fokus auf den Verkauf von Nicht-Medikamenten zu verlagern. Diese Erkenntnisse sind deshalb von Bedeutung, weil sie zusätzlich zu langjährigen, massiven strukturellen Unterschieden in der Anzahl der Apotheken pro Kopf in Regionen mit Selbstdispensation auftreten. xvi
