3 Summary In recent years, there has been increasing interest in organic semiconducting materials for flexible (opto-)electronic applications, such as, for instance, flexible electronic circuitry and solar cells. In particular conjugated polymers promise mechanical properties far superior compared to those of inorganic semiconductors and, potentially, at much lower cost due to their relative ease of processing. However, currently available polymer semiconductors are too brittle and, in addition, environmentally too unstable to realise such flexible opto-electronic components, unless tediously fabricated on inert substrates and encapsulated by additional barrier layers. Unfortunately, previous attempts to prepare tough and stable semiconducting materials by combination of the conjugated species with an amorphous insulating polymer invariably resulted in a considerable decrease of their electronic performance. By contrast, in the work presented in this thesis semi-crystalline insulating polymers are employed as matrix materials, which are demonstrated to permit production of mixtures that comprise only minute amounts of the semiconductor without sacrificing their electronic performance. As a result, besides offering a clear cost advantage, the mechanical toughness and environmental stability of such electronic bi-component systems are significantly enhanced when compared to the neat conjugated polymers. Another shortcoming of many semiconducting polymers is their inability to display useful electron- as well as hole-conduction, both of which are required for efficient solar cells. Such functionality can readily be induced by blending a hole-conducting polymer with a small-molecular electron-conducting species. However, the photovoltaic performance of such bi-component systems strongly depends on their microstructure, which until now has been elusive to control in a predictive manner. In the second part of this thesis, the eutectic nature of common polymer:small molecule mixtures, which readily leads to the desired fine-grained, percolating structures, is established optimum blend compositions and processing schemes for similar systems may now be predicted simply on the basis of their phase behaviour. 3

4 In the final part of this thesis, it is demonstrated that the mechanical robustness also of photovoltaic mixtures can be improved by blending with a semi-crystalline commodity polymer similar to the electronic binaries discussed above. Consequently, the here developed concepts for electronic bi-component and photovoltaic tri-component systems may permit design of truly flexible (opto-)electronic components. 4

5 Zusammenfassung In den letzten Jahren hat das Interesse an organischen, halbleitenden Materialien für biegsame (opto-)elektronische Anwendungen, wie zum Beispiel für biegsame elektronische Schaltkreise und Solarzellen, stark zugenommen. Besonders konjugierte Polymere versprechen im Vergleich zu inorganischen Halbleitern weitaus bessere mechanische Eigenschaften und, aufgrund ihrer vergleichsweise einfachen Verarbeitung, potentiell zu viel geringeren Kosten. Momentan verfügbare Polymer Halbleiter sind jedoch zu brüchig und darüber hinaus zu wenig umweltstabil, um mit ihnen solche biegsamen opto-elektronischen Bauteile verwirklichen zu können, außer man fabriziert sie auf Trägersubstraten und versieht sie zusätzlich mit einer Schutzschicht. Bisherige Versuche, feste und umweltstabile halbleitende Materialien durch Kombination mit amorphen isolierenden Polymeren herzustellen, haben ausnahmslos zu einer beträchtlichen Verschlechterung von deren elektronischen Eigenschaften geführt. Im Gegensatz dazu werden in der in dieser These präsentierten Arbeit teil-kristalline Polymere als Matrixmaterialien verwendet und es wird gezeigt, daß dadurch Mischungen ermöglicht werden, welche nur sehr geringe Mengen des Halbleiters enthalten, ohne daß dadurch deren elektronische Eigenschaften beeinträchtigt werden. Abgesehen von einem klar ersichtlichen Kostenvorteil bieten solche Zwei-Komponenten Systeme eine im Vergleich zu den reinen konjugierten Polymeren deutlich erhöhte mechanische Festigkeit und Umweltstabilität. Ein weiteres Defizit vieler halbleitender Polymere ist ihr Unvermögen, die für effiziente Solarzellen erforderte ausreichende Elektronen- wie Loch-Leitfähigkeit aufzuweisen. Diese Funktionalität kann jedoch leicht herbeigeführt werden, indem man das Loch-Leitende Polymer mit einem Elektronen-Leitenden Einzelmolekül vermischt. Die photovoltaische Leistung von solchen Zwei-Komponenten Systemen hängt allerdings maßgeblich von deren Mikrostruktur ab, welche bis jetzt nicht in vorausschauender Art und Weise kontrolliert werden konnte. Im zweiten Teil dieser These wird die eutektische Natur von herkömmlichen Polymer:Einzelmolekül Mischungen etabliert, welche die erwünschten fein verteilten, zusammenhängenden Strukturen ermöglicht optimale Kompositionen und Verarbeitungsverfahren können nun für ähnliche Systeme einfach von deren Phasenverhalten abgeleitet werden. 5

6 Im letzten Teil dieser These wird demonstriert, daß die mechanische Widerstandsfähigkeit auch von photovoltaischen Mischungen durch die Zugabe eines teil-kristallinen Polymers verbessert werden kann vergleichbar mit den schon besprochenen elektronischen Gemengen. Es ist demzufolge ersichtlich, daß die hier entwickelten Konzepte für elektronische Zwei- und photovoltaische Drei-Komponenten Systeme die Entwicklung von wirklich biegsamen (opto-)elektronischen Bauteilen ermöglichen könnten. 6
