Lebenswissenschaften
5 Introduction What will life look like in tomorrow s world? What challenges and opportu nities will our society face? Humanity is massively altering its environment its own habitat, and that of millions of other species. Ecosystems are being permanently influenced. Global change and an ageing society require new solutions to altered living conditions: professional challenges, mental and physical fitness, health and nutrition. Globalisation is spreading organisms around the world at great speed including pathogens. The institutes of the section Life Sciences conduct research into human health, environmental issues, crop plants and wild plants, livestock and wild animals. They make a pioneering contribution to our understanding of these societal challenges, and highlight potential solutions to tackling negative developments. The research topics pursued by the institutes of the section focus on the following four key areas: Biodiversity: Which species exist or have existed on our planet? How did this biodiversity come about, and what are its characteristic processes? Why is diversity important, and how adaptable are the planet s ecosystems? How can biodiversity be preserved and yet sustainably utilised? How can a growing global population be supplied with safe and healthy food? Infection and inflammation: How can pathogens i.e. viruses, bacteria, fungi and parasites be effectively controlled in humans, animals and plants? How do we deal with new pathogens? What causes the increase in chronic inflammatory diseases, and how can these be healed? Lifestyle, the environment and healthy ageing: What effects do nutrition, work conditions, stress and other environmental factors have on our health? How can we stay mentally and physically healthy our entire lives? What is the best way to prevent illness? Life Sciences
Lebenswissenschaften
7 Bioactive compounds and biotechnology: Which bioactive compounds can be found in nature, and how do we develop new ones? How can bioactive compounds be improved and produced using biotechnology for use in medicine, food production and agriculture? Alongside their research laboratories, the institutes operate important research infrastructures which among other things generate and utilise research data: specialist clinics, technology platforms, research collections and field stations. The range of methods used in the research approaches also includes animal testing when no alternatives are available. The researchers are here bound by the 3R principle (replacement, reduction, refinement). They take their great responsibility very seriously, and communicate openly and pro-actively on animal-testing-based research. Research museums make complex research topics accessible to the general public. The social involvement of the Leibniz Institutes and their re search topics is reflected in activities geared towards the transfer of knowledge, as well as in active civic participation (citizen science). 8 8 I. Biodiversität Forschungsziele Die Untersuchung der biologischen Vielfalt, ihrer abiotischen und biotischen Ursprünge sowie ihrer Bezüge und Wechselwirkungen zu Wirtschaft, Gesellschaft und Politik erfordert eine integrative Herangehensweise. Lebenswissenschaften
9 I. Biodiversity Research Objectives Studying biodiversity, its abiotic and biotic origins as well as its links and interactions with the economic, social and political sphere, requires an integra tive approach. There are nine Leibniz Institutes conducting research into the diversity of life at all levels: genes, species and ecosystems. They record and document, analyse and model biodiversity. In doing so, they address the following questions: What are the key factors in understanding the interrelations within and between ecosystems, the role of biodiversity and the consequences of anthropogenic changes and interventions? What interactions exist between biodiversity and climate change, health and food security for a growing global population? How can we record the diversity of species and breeds, as well as the genetic and (bio)chemical diversity of natural and selected populations? How do we pool, expand and utilise this knowledge in order to breed improved crop plants and livestock? The institutes of the section conduct research on, and document, biodiversity and processes of evolution, selection and extinction events of the past, pres ent and future. Their work also encompasses modelling future biodiversity scenarios, assessing biodiversity goods and ecosystem services, and developing methods for sustainably utilising and managing biodiversity. The aim of the research is to be able to preserve, protect and sustainably utilise the resources necessary to human existence. Life Sciences
Lebenswissenschaften
11 Initiatives for the Future In the Leibniz Research Alliance Biodiversity, the Leibniz Association pools expertise in the field of biodiversity research in a unique way. In the areas of basic and applied research, cutting-edge technology is used and internationally leading collections are maintained. Research infrastructures are to be consolidated in future, in particular by digitalising and integrating the collections and the alliance s biodiversity monitoring activities. The alliance s key initiatives include the German Centre for Biodiversity Monitoring (BioM-D) and the German Natural Science Collections as an Integrated Research Infrastructure (DCOLL). Europe-wide, the ESFRI infra structure EMPHASIS opens up whole new ways to non-destructively analyse plant characteristics using digital imaging. Furthermore, the Leibniz Association provides academic expertise for the dialogue with citizens and policy-makers, through to the active participation of citizens with relevant technical knowledge in the research (citizen science). The institutes expertise is also brought to bear in national and international committees and programmes, including the Convention on Biological Diver sity (CBD), the United Nations, the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) and the Nagoya Protocol on Access and Benefit-sharing (ABS). Their biodiversity researchers collaborate closely with researchers in the field of new and emerging infectious diseases as part of the One Health concept. Life Sciences
12 II. Lebenswissenschaften
13 II. Infection and Inflammation Research Objectives The key challenges in health research include acute, chronic, persistent and latent infections, as well as chronic inflammatory diseases resulting from infections or occurring independently as part of the ageing process. The Leibniz Association brings together excellent research institutes working in this area, 14 of which are part of the section Life Sciences. Their aim is to conduct comparative research into infections caused by various pathogens, as well as chronic inflammatory diseases affecting various organs, and to thereby gain a fundamental understanding of these illnesses. Drawing on their findings, the institutes can develop new preventive approaches, such as vaccines, and new treatment methods for chronic inflammatory diseases, such as immunotherapies. The following questions are at the heart of the research: How can we improve our fundamental molecular understanding of the biology of pathogens and the immune system? How can we use these insights for the targeted development of hygiene measures, new antibiotics, new vaccine procedures and new opportunities for treating and preventing infectious diseases? How can we gain a better understanding of the various components of the One Health concept humans and animals, food and agriculture in relation to infectious pathogens in order to permanently shut off transmission pathways? Why do allergies and chronic inflammation arise in some people following an infection? What is the driving force behind chronic inflammatory illnesses? How can these diseases be treated or even healed in the long term? Life Sciences
Lebenswissenschaften
15 Comparative studies are important to understanding infectious and inflamma tory diseases. The expertise of the participating Leibniz Institutes makes precisely these comparisons possible. The section Life Sciences encompasses institutes that study viral, microbial and tropical pathogens in humans and animals, and record, collect and characterise these pathogens on a global scale. The section brings this expertise together with that of institutes researching immune reactions, immunity and inflammation in humans but also in livestock and crop plants. Transdisciplinary approaches to analysing and preventing infections are pooled within the Leibniz Research Alliance INFECTIONS 21. The close links between Leibniz Institutes and university medicine are cru cial in this respect. These links make it possible to align the research with clinical realities and rapidly put the therapeutic concepts developed by Leibniz researchers into clinical practice. Leibniz Institutes study allergies, diabetes, neuro-degenerative diseases, tuberculosis, rheumatism, chronic lung and bowel inflammation, as well as infectious diseases. In this area, the Leibniz Associa tion pools an impressive wealth of expertise which makes it possible to discover commonalities and distinctive characteristics within the diversity of dis eases, and to use these insights to develop entirely new therapeutic approaches. Initiatives for the Future The institutes are seeking to further expand their dialogue with partners in academic medicine and their collaborations with clinics, so that new treatment concepts can be transferred into clinical practice more rapidly. These collaborations are also to be intensified because the Leibniz Institutes technical expertise can further push the direct study of diseased tissue. Furthermore, the section wants to set new trends in the combination of evidence-based medicine and the treat ment of patients. A follow-up care concept for the transi tion of chronically ill people into outpatient support programmes represents a core element that has immediate benefits for patients. Important initiatives include the Leibniz Re search Alliance INFECTIONS 21, the Leibniz Institutes involvement in the German Centres for Health Research, as well as the already successfully established Leibniz ScienceCampi. 16 16 III. Lebenswissenschaften
17 III. Lifestyle, the Environment and Healthy Ageing Research Objectives Rapid progress and fundamental changes to the world of work, demographic change, an increase in age-related diseases together with their co-morbidities and multi-morbidities, as well as the concomitant costs to society and healthcare systems, represent major challenges of our era. 13 institutes of the section Life Sciences contribute to tackling these challenges with their research into human and animal health. Their key research focus is the preservation of mental and physical fitness and increasing the healthy human lifespan through the sustainable prevention of illness. This research centres on three questions: How do environmental influences, nutrition, working conditions, pollution exposure and biological factors influence physical and cog nitive performance? How do pathologies such as obesity, type 2 diabetes, dementia and rheumatism develop? What interrelations exist, and how can methods of diagnosis, treatment and, above all, prevention be improved? What are the necessary framework conditions for healthy ageing? How can life-long learning help in healthy ageing and prevent age-related memory loss? In order to answer these questions, the institutes study large cohorts of pa tients. They also use model organisms, cell cultures and other in-vitro systems. With cutting-edge molecular-genetic and spectroscopic procedures, together with high-resolution imaging techniques at the micro and macro scale, they are able to identify relevant biological factors, depict changes in tissue, and describe these processes on the basis of systems biology. Life Sciences
Lebenswissenschaften
19 In the key research area of lifestyle, the environment and healthy ageing, the Leibniz Association offers a pool of expertise that is unique throughout Germany. Its strength lies in the diversity of approaches and in the close collaboration between the institutes within the section and within Leibniz Research Alliances across the different sections, such as Sustainable Food Production and Healthy Nutrition and Healthy Ageing. Within these alliances and in major project consortia, the health researchers collaborate with other partners working in the fields of the humanities, environmental science, engineering and economics, and within industry. The great potential of health research within the Leibniz Association is, for example, revealed in the German National Cohort (GNC) study, involving four Leibniz Institutes acting as recruitment centres, and in the institutes involvement with the German Centres for Health Research. Whether it is healthy nutrition, pollution exposure or an environmentally aware lifestyle: the topics within this key research area are the subject of public debate, and the demand for expert knowledge is great. The Leibniz Association s health-research institutes have recognised this demand, and participate in pub lic debate in order to work with citizens and policy-makers to find solutions. The decentralised organisation of the institutes within the Leibniz Association hereby provides the necessary flexibility to allow them to react rapidly, expertly and effectively to society s requirements. Initiatives for the Future The institutes are planning to extend their expertise in the area of the systems biology of ageing in particular, as well as that of personalised prevention. The Federal Act to Strengthen Health Promotion and Preventive Health Care (Preventive Health Care Act PrävG) is a powerful motivating force for joint research on the topics of lifestyle, the environment and healthy ageing. Sustainable prevention is only possible when those factors which cause illness and those which are responsible for health and remaining healthy are known. This is why the institutes will, among other things, use funding from the internal Leibniz Competition in order to initiate new collaborations between health researchers and analysts, biostatisticians and sociologists. Life Sciences
20 IV. Lebenswissenschaften
21 IV. Bioactive Compounds and Biotechnology Research Objectives Without suitable bioactive compounds, medical progress, safeguarding agricultural production and healthy nutrition become impossible. Bioactive compounds are molecules that effect defined changes in target organisms. As the active components in medicine, they help to cure illness. In food, they influence enjoyment and health. In agriculture, they represent the foundation of our food production thanks to their use as crop protection or veterinary medication. No matter what form they take or whether they are natural or synthetic in origin: bioactive compounds are essential to our daily lives. In this key research area, the Leibniz Institutes dedicate themselves to the following research questions: How can the chemical, molecular-biological and biotechnological methods available today be used effectively in order to discover and manufacture new bioactive compounds? How can bioactive compounds be improved in order, for example, to switch off undesired side-effects? In the face of new challenges, how can we utilise existing bioactive compounds and discover new ones? Life Sciences
Lebenswissenschaften
23 The development of innovative medications, for example as antibiotics, immunosuppressants, cancer therapies or neurological treatments, is of great social rele vance. The current antibiotics crisis is ample evidence of this. The number of multi-resistant bacteria that can no longer be treated with approved bioactive compounds is growing. Developing new active compounds is also of great importance in the prevention, early diagnosis and treatment of cancer, autoimmune diseases, diabetes and neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer s. In the area of Food and Agriculture, the institutes researchers focus on bioactive compounds for crop protection, but also on natural bioactive compounds which we ingest with our food. Such naturally originating bioactive compounds are also contained in lifestyle products, such as cosmetics and hygiene products. The breakneck developments in biotechnology make it possible to use synthetic biology and molecular cultivation to create innovative production processes, for health- and flavour-enhancing components, for example. The Leibniz Association s institutes are world-leaders in this area. The Leibniz Research Alliance Bioactive Compounds and Biotechnology works across different sections and encompasses eleven institutes within the section Life Sciences. As the search for new bioactive compounds is predominantly based on natural substances, research into bioactive compounds combines areas of biodiversity research with the area of One Health and the key research areas Infection and Inflammation and Lifestyle, the Environment and Healthy Ageing. Initiatives for the Future The Leibniz Research Alliance Bioactive Compounds and Biotechnology is pressing on with further pooling research into bioactive compounds, espe cially those based on natural substances, and their creation using biotechnology. There is an emphasis here on developing supporting infrastructures. As part of the Leibniz integrative Omics Network (LiON), the research alliance is planning an initiative on the metabolome analysis of relevant organisms such as pathogens, medicinal plants, crop plants, and sources of antibiotics. In the BMBF-funded Leibniz Research Cluster Bio/Synthetic Multifunctional Micro-Production Units, innovative procedures in cell-free biotechnology are being developed. The ESFRI infrastructure EU-OPENSCREEN facilitates the Europe-wide search for new bioactive compounds in large substance collections using the lock-and-key principle. Life Sciences
Lebenswissenschaften
25 A virtual Leibniz Metabolomics and Bioactives Resource Center (LiON and Leibniz Research Alliance Bioactive Compounds and Biotechnology ) is in the planning stage. It is the task of the LiON network to pool and further develop the participating Leibniz Institutes expertise in omics technologies. Future Perspectives of the Section The institutes within the section Life Sciences will help determine the direction in which the research encompassed by the One Health concept develops. This concept takes a holistic, interdisciplinary approach to examining the complex interrelations between humans, animals, plants, the environment and health. In future, the institutes will analyse and model these interrelations in the context of global change. In order to better combat infectious diseases and chronic inflammatory diseases, we will further develop and utilise individualised approaches within evidence-based medicine. Individually adapting prevention strategies and shaping the work environment in line with research findings will be a great challenge. Specific therapeutic approaches and diagnostic tools are to be developed for the purpose of targeted treatment, to which end new bioactive compounds need to be isolated, characterised and transferred into clinical practice. To meet these challenges, the institutes have created suitable struc tures in the form of research infrastructures, Leibniz Research Alliances and Leibniz ScienceCampi. In future, these forms of collaboration will be further consoli dated, and re searchers from different disciplines thereby brought together in order e.g. to help actively shape a global research space. The funding programmes of the Leibniz Competition offer an important tool for developing the necessary interdisciplinary collaborations and recruiting the best junior researchers within the life sciences. Life Sciences
Lebenswissenschaften
27 Alongside the partnership networks between the existing Leibniz Institutes, the section s profile will be systematically developed through strategic expansions and the addition of new institutes.
