Umschlagbild: Keramikschliff mit kleinen Fehlern Siliziumnitrid-Keramiken vereinen die wünschenswerte, jedoch seltene Kombination aus hoher Festigkeit, sehr guter Temperaturwechselbeständigkeit und geringer Dichte. Wegen der hohen Produktionskosten ist ein breiter Einsatz jedoch eingeschränkt, denn das Siliziumnitrid muss unter anderem mit Hilfe von Zusätzen bei rund 1900 Grad Celsius verdichtet (gesintert) werden. Unter dem Elektronenmikroskop untersuchen die Forscher die verschiedenen Auswirkungen der Sinterzusätze auf die Mikrostruktur und Porosität des Siliziumnitrids. Hierfür ist erforderlich, die Keramiken anzuschleifen ohne dass sich winzige, störende Ausbrüche oder Rissbildung einschleichen, wie sie auf dem Bild zu sehen sind. Das von Dr. Stefanie Wildhack und Michael Welter angefertigte Bild ziert den aktuellen Jahreskalender der Max-Planck-Gesellschaft Bilder aus der Wissenschaft 2007.
