Installation Guide This document describes installation of the powerline products. Please read this document before installing the product. This publication contains the following sections: Important safety instructions The first thing you need to know before you begin to install Product installation guide Specification Important Safety Instructions This product is intended for connection to the AC power line. For installation/removing instructions, refer to the Installation section. The following precautions should be taken when using this product. Please read all instructions before installing and operating this product. Please keep all instructions for later reference. Please follow all warnings and instructions marked on the product. Cleaning / reservations Unplug the AC coupler from the wall outlet before cleaning. Use a damp cloth for cleaning. DO NOT use liquid cleaners or aerosol cleaners. Do not operate this product near water. Use only in dry conditions, not for outdoor use. The total wattage of the connected devices must not exceed 2300 watts. This product should never be placed near or over a radiator, or heat register. This product relies on the building s electrical installation for short-circuit (over current) protection. Ensure that a fuse or circuit breaker no larger than 120 VAC 20A or 240 VAC 16A is used on the phase conductors (all current-carrying conductors). Do not allow anything to rest on the product interconnect cords. Do not locate this product where people may walk on the cords. The product can be operated at an ambient temperature of 40 C. For pluggable equipment, the socket-outlet shall be installed near the equipment and shall be easily accessible. Only a qualified technician should service this product. Opening or removing covers may result in exposure to dangerous voltage points or other risks. Unplug the AC coupler from the wall outlet and refer the product to qualified service personnel for the following conditions: When the interconnect cords are damaged or frayed. If liquid has been spilled into the product. If the product has been exposed to rain or water. If the product does not operate normally when the operating instructions are followed. If the product exhibits a distinct change in performance. The first thing you need to know before you begin to install the CD 1. Before installing, make sure your PC meets these requirements for hardware installation: Microsoft Windows 98SE, ME, 2000, XP, Vista, Mac OS or linux OS Pentium III or better, clock rate faster than 2.0GHz recommended At least one free Ethernet port for 500Mbps PLC Pass Through 2. Your PC must not be configured for another network. This means that: No network clients except for Microsoft Network*, Client for Netware* Networks, or Microsoft Family Logon* are installed. No network services except file and printer sharing for Microsoft Networks or Personal Web Server* are installed No network protocols except Microsoft s TCP/IP, IPX/SPX, NetBEUI, or Net BIOS support for IPX/SPX are installed 3. Network installation requires two steps: Install the 500Mbps PLC-Pass Through For each PC to be added to the network, repeat the process 4. 500Mbps PLC Pass Through Ethernet Cable (CAT 5) 5. Familiarize yourself with the Powerline device connections: There is only one Ethernet port. This is used for the connection with PC, xdsl/router, Cable Modem, or Wireless AP. 6. Limitation of the PLC device: To meet the safety regulation, the longest distance between powerline carrier devices will be limited at 200 meter and for in-house use only. More than 200 meter will cause the signal reduction or data loss. Always connect to the nearest source where possible and avoid extensions power connectors. Every step that brings you further away from the source (your power network) will cause signal reduction or loss. There are some limitations in regards to the house main installation. Some phase jumps might not be possible or cause signal reduction or loss. Product Installation Guide Notice: Do not plug the device into a power strip or surge protector because these devices may consist of filter and impair signal. Also avoid plugging the device right next to noisy sources such as cell phone charger, Halogen light, Energy saving bulb, noisy desktop computer, vacuum cleaner, etc. Both cases result in poor transmission speed. Nevertheless, you can put the noisy source to the Pass Through s outlet. The outlet will filter out the noise and improve the Powerline communication performance. English 4

To install for the PC local Powerline network Use the supplied Category 5 Ethernet cable to connect powerline product and your PC s Ethernet port. Plug the powerline product to power outlet. The PWR LED indicator will light on after plugging. You can repeat steps 1 and 2 for connecting the others. The PLC-ACT LED indicator starts blinking when the data communication proceeds on Powerline. The ETH-ACT LED indicator starts blinking when the data communication proceeds on Ethernet. To share a xdsl or cable modem with Internet access service 1. Connect one powerline product to the broadband router Plug the powerline into an AC outlet. Plug the provided Ethernet cable into the RJ45 connector of the powerline product and plug the other end of the cable into an available Ethernet port of the Router. 2. Connect the other powerline products(s) to the PC(s) to share the Internet access Plug the Bridge into an AC outlet. Plug the provided Ethernet cable into the RJ45 connector of the powerline product and plug the other end of the cable into Ethernet port on the PC. As wireless AP (Access Point) Extender 1. Connect one powerline to the broadband router Plug the Bridge into an AC outlet. Plug the provided Ethernet cable into the RJ45 connector of the powerline product and plug the other end of the cable into an available Ethernet port of the broadband router. 2. Connect the other Pass Through to the wireless AP. Plug the Bridge into an AC outlet. Plug the provided Ethernet cable into the RJ45 connector of the powerline product and plug the other end of the cable into the Ethernet port on the wireless AP. 5 English

Installation Because powerline product sends data over the powerline, it is recommended that you plug directly into a power outlet. Do not plug the device into a UPS or power strip with surge protection. The power-pass through product has its own power filter for protection against surges. English 6

LED/buttons PWR (Red) PLC (Green/Orange/Red) ETH (Green) On: Power on Blinking: Standby mode (*1) On: Ethernet Link detected *1 : The Power LED indicator will blink in standby mode. It will get into standby mode, if you plug the device to outlet and no Ethernet link detected after booted and 60 second later. If you unplug the Ethernet cable, it will get into standby mode after 60 seconds. Under standby mode, PLC and ETH LEDs will both be off. Push Buttons (Only applicable for models with push button) Push button functions are disabled under Standby mode. Setup Button Usage: First time to setup your private network: Step 1. Press and hold the device s SETUP button for more than 10 seconds. You can release the button when you see all the device s LEDs are off and restart. The original network encryption setting is cleared. Step 2. Repeat Step 1 to clear another device s original network encryption setting. Step 3. Press both devices SETUP button for 1 to 3 seconds. You will see both devices Power LED start blinking. Both devices start to communicate and try to setup their private network encryption. They will complete the new private network encryption setting within 10 seconds. You will see both devices all LEDs are off and restart. Note: The setup operation timeout is 120 seconds. 7 English

Step 4. If failed, please repeat Step 1 to Step 3 again. Add a new device to the existing private network: Step 1. Plug the new device. Press and hold its SETUP button for more than 10 seconds to clear the original network encryption setting. Step 2. Press the new device s SETUP button for 1 to 3 seconds. The Power LED starts blinking. Step 3. Select a random device from the existing private network. Press its SETUP button for 1 to 3 seconds. The device s Power LED starts blinking. Step 4. The new device starts to communicate with the device from existing private network, and tries to join this existing private network. It will complete the new private network encryption setting within 10 seconds. You will see the new device s all LEDs are off and restart after completing the private network setting. The existing private network device s Power LED become solid. Note: The setup operation timeout is 120 seconds. Step 5. If failed, please repeat Step 1 to Step 3 again. Leave the private network: Step 1. If the device wants to leave the private network, press and hold the device s SETUP button for more than 10 seconds to clear the network encryption setting. This device will leave the private network. Reset Button Usage: 1. Reset the device to the factory default setting: Push the device s RESET button for 1 to 3 seconds. You will see the device s all LEDs are off and restart. The device s setting resets to the factory defaults. English 8

Introduction This Utility Program enables users to find 500Mbps PLC-Ethernet Bridge devices on the Powerline network, measures data rate performance, ensures privacy and performs diagnostics by setting user defined secure Powerline networks. 1.1. System Requirements Operating System Microsoft Windows XP, Vista, 7 Browser Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0 or later. CPU Intel Pentium III or better, clock rate faster than 2.0GHz recommended RAM At least 128MB Free Disk Space At least 20MB Network Interface At least one Fast/Gigabit Ethernet network card, and Ethernet Cord 1.2. Installation First, you need to verify that there is no other Powerline utility installed on your computer before installing this utility. If there is another utility installed, please uninstall it. Then, please insert the Utility CD-ROM into the computer s CD-ROM drive. The CD will launch an IE browser. Click the necessary link to start installation. Please install WinPcap v4.1.1 (you can download it from http://www. English 10

winpcap.org) before install the Powerline utility. If IE browser is not your default browser, please run WinPcap_4_1_1.exe at D:\Software\WinPcap\, and then run setup.exe at D:\Software\Setup\. (Please change D: to your CD-ROM drive). Follow the installation wizard through the installation process. 1.3. Run the Utility After installing the Utility Program, please run the Utility Program from the Start / All Programs or double-click the utility icon on the desktop. 2. How to use There are four Tabs (Main, Privacy, Diagnostics, About) in the Utility program layout. Each Tab will provide different functions. Sec. 2.1~2.4 explains each tab s functions: 2.1. Main Tab As shown in Figure 1, the Main tab will list all the 500Mbps PLC-Ethernet Bridge devices logically connected in current available Powerline networks. 11 English

Figure 1: Main Tab window NIC (Network Interface Cards) Selector First, please select the Network Interface Card (NIC) connected to PLC- Ethernet Bridge device directly. Local MAC It shows the local 500Mbps PLC-Ethernet Bridge device directly connected to your computer via Ethernet. The Utility will scan the Powerline network periodically to search for all the 500Mbps PLC-Ethernet Bridge devices, and keep the information updated. You can click this button, and it will show the device s f/w at bottom. English 12

Upper Window The upper window lists all the remote PLC-Ethernet Bridge devices found in the current logical Powerline networks. This window displays information such as Device Name, MAC Address, Device Password, and Speed (Mbps) for the remote devices. The Name column shows the nickname of each remote device inside the Powerline network. The default name is Remote. You can change it by clicking the item first, and then click the Set Name button. It will pop-up Set Name dialog box as shown in Figure 2. You can input the new name for the device. Figure 2: Set Name Dialog The MAC Address column shows remote device s MAC address. The Password column shows remote device s password. You can input the password by clicking the Enter Password button. The Speed (Mbps) column shows the remote device s mutual transmit speed with the local device, in Mbps (Million bits per second). Enter Password button If you want to create a private network, you need to enter the remote device s password first. Please click on the intended device to make it high 13 English

lighted then click the Enter Password button, and the Enter Password dialog box will show up (Figure 3). The selected device s MAC address is shown in the dialog box. After entering the password, click OK button. Figure 3: Set Device s Password Scan button The Scan button is used to search for the 500Mbps PLC-Ethernet Bridge devices connected to your logical network immediately. By default setting, it will automatically scan every 10 seconds and updates the display lists. Security When rolling out of factory, every 500Mbps PLC-Ethernet Bridge device carries a default logical network name: HomePlugAV. The Security group provides functions to manage this logical network name and create private network. You can change the local device s network name by check the Set local device box. And/Or change the remote device s network name by check the Set all remote devices whose Password has been entered box. Please fill in each remote device s password in advance following the instructions in Enter Password button. English 14

Set button After input the new Network Name and check the options, please click Set button to change the network name of selected device. After changed the network name to a new one, all the devices with different network name will no longer be able to communicate or respond to you. 2.2. Diagnostics Tab The Diagnostics tab shows the system information and the history of all the devices that have been found before (Figure 4). The upper window of Diagnostics tab shows the host computer s system data and it shows: MAC Address of all NICs (network interface card) MAC Address and the firmware version of the 500Mbps PLC-Ethernet Bridge device which is connected to each NIC Computer name User name Processor and operating system information Utility program version Versions of all the driver DLLs and libraries used The lower window of Diagnostics tab contains the history of all remote devices which have been found by the computer previously. All the devices will be shown here, regardless of they are currently active or not. The following information is available from the list: Name MAC Address Password Speed(Mbps) Last Seen The diagnostics information displayed on the upper and lower window could be saved to text file or print out by printers. Devices which no longer existed in the network can be deleted using the Delete... button. Delete button Select the device which is no longer existed in the network by clicking its record first, then click this button to delete the record. 15 English

Reinigung / Betriebsumgebung Vor der Reinigung entfernen Sie bitte das Gerät aus dem Stromnetz. Benutzen Sie einen feuchten Lappen zur Reinigung. Verwenden Sie keine Reinigungsmittel oder Sprays. Betreiben Sie das Gerät nicht in der Nähe von Wasser. Benutzen Sie das Produkt nur in trockener Umgebung und im Innenraum. Die Gesamtleistungsaufnahme der angeschlossenen Geräte sollte 2300 Watt nicht übersteigen. Das Produkt sollte nie in der Nähe von Heizungen oder Heizkörpern platziert werden. Das Gerät hängt vom Überspannungsschutz der elektrischen Anlage ab. Stellen Sie keine Gegenstände auf die Kabel des Gerätes. Platzieren Sie das Produkt so, dass nicht versehentlich auf die Kabel getreten werden kann. Das Gerät kann bei einer Umgebungstemperatur bi zu 40 C betrieben werden. Die verwendete Steckdose sollte sich nahe am anzuschießenden Gerät befinden und leicht zugänglich sein. Nur Autorisiertes und qualifiziertes Personal sollte den Service an diesem Produkt vornehmen. Das Öffnen bzw. Entfernen des Gehäuses kann spannungsführende Kontakte freilegen und damit ein Risiko für Stromschläge darstellen. Ziehen Sie das Produkt aus der Steckdose und führen es dem Service zu wenn: Das Netzwerkkabel beschädigt oder ausgefranst ist. Flüssigkeiten in das Gerät eingedrungen sind. Das Produkt Wasser oder Regen ausgesetzt war. Das Gerät trotz korrekter Installation nicht funktioniert. Das Gerät eine auffällige Änderung in der Performance aufweist. Was Sie vor der Installation der CD wissen müssen 1. Einschränkungen des powerline Gerätes: Um den Sicherheitsvorschriften gerecht zu werden ist die maximale Verbindunglänge auf 200 m in einem Haus beschränkt. Längere Distanzen führen zum abfallen des Signals und somit zu Datenverlust. Wenn möglich wählen Sie die kürzeste Verbindung und vermeiden Verteilersteckdosen. Jedes Element zischen den Powerline Modulen reduziert die Leistung des Signals. Es gibt Einschränkungen bei der Nutzung innerhalb eines Hausstromnetztes. Phasensprünge können das Signal stören und zu Datenverlust führen. Installationsanleitung Hinweis: Stecken Sie die Module nicht in Steckdosenverteiler oder Überspannungsschütze. Diese Teile enthalten Filter, die die Kommunikation stören oder verhindern könnten. Stecken Sie das Gerät nicht direkt neben Trafobetriebenen Elementen wie Handyladegeräte, Halogenscheinwerfern, Energiesparlampen oder Computernetzteilen an. Das kann zu schlechten Übertragungsraten führen. Nichtsdestotrotz können Sie die o.g. Geräte an den Durchgangsstecker des Powerline Moduls anschließen. Der Ausgang wird die Störungen herausfiltern und die Performance erhöhen. 19 Deutsch

Installation eines lokalen Powerline Netzwerks zwischen PC`s Benutzen Sie das mitgelieferte Cat 5 Netzwerkkabel und verbinden Sie damit das Powerlinemodul und den Netzwerkanschluss Ihres PC. Stecken Sie das Powerline Modul in eine Steckdose. Die PWR LED wird nach dem Einstecken leuchten. Wiederholen Sie Schritt 1 und 2 an den anderen Computern. Die PLC-ACT LED beginnt zu blinken wenn die Powerlinemodule eine Verbindung zueinander aufbauen. Die ETH-ACT LED blinkt wenn die Netzwerkverbindung hergestellt wird. Gemeinsame Nutzung eines xdsl oder Kabelmodems mit Internetzugang 1. Verbinden Sie ein Powerlinemodul mit dem Breitbandrouter Stecken Sie das Powerlinemodul in eine Steckdose. Verbinden Sie das Powerlinemodul mit dem Netzwerkanschluss des Routers mit dem mitgelieferten Netzwerkkabel. Stecken Sie des zweite Powerlinemodul ( Bridge) in eine Steckdose nahe des PC. Verbinden Sie das Powerlinemodul via Netzwerkkabel mit dem Netzwerkanschluss ihres PC. Als WLan AP (Access Point) Extender 1. Verbinden Sie ein Powerlinemodul mit dem Breitbandrouter Stecken Sie das Powerlinemodul in eine Steckdose. Verbinden Sie das Powerlinemodul mit dem Netzwerkanschluss des Routers mit dem mitgelieferten Netzwerkkabel. Deutsch 20

2. Verbinden Sie das zweite Powerlinemodul mit dem Wlan. Stecken Sie das Powerlinemodul in eine Steckdose. Verbinden Sie das Powerlinemodul mit dem Netzwerkanschluss des Wlan Access Points mit dem mitgelieferten Netzwerkkabel. Da das Powerline System Daten über das Stromnetz transportiert, ist es empfohlen ihn immer direkt in eine Steckdose zu stecken. Betreiben Sie das Gerät nicht an Überspannungsfiltern oder Steckdosenleisten. Der Powerlineadapter hat einen eigenen Filter gegen Überspannungen. 21 Deutsch

Das Gerät geht in Standby wenn Sie es in eine Steckdose stecken und innerhalb von 60 Sekunden keine Netzwerkverbindung erkannt wird. Wenn Sie das Netzwerkkabel abziehen geht das Gerät ebenfalls innerhalb von 60 Sekunden in den Standby Modus. IM Standby Modus erlöschen sowohl die PLC als auch die ETH LEDs. Tasten (Nur zutreffend für Modelle mit Tasten) Tasten sind im Standby inaktiv. Setup Taste Benutzung: Ersteinrichtung in Ihrem privaten Netzwerk: Schritt 1. Drücken und halten Sie die Setuptaste für länger als 10 Sekunden. Sie können die Taste loslassen wenn alle 3 LED`s erloschen sind und das Gerät neu startet. Die Netzwerkverschlüsselung ist nun zurückgesetzt. Schritt 2. Wiederholen Sie diesen Schritt bei anderen Geräten um die Verschlüsslung zurück zu setzen. Schritt 3. Drücken Sie die Setuptaste an beiden Geräte für 1-3 Sekunden. Sie sehen die PWR LED blinken. Beide Geräte beginnen nun miteinander zu kommunizieren und eine verschlüsselte Verbindung herzustellen. Das herstellen der Verbindung nimmt ca. 10 Sekunden in Anspruch. Im Anschluss erlöschen alle LED und das Gerät startet neu. Hinweis: Die Setup Funktion wird nach 120 Sekunden automatisch beendet. Schritt 4. Sollte der Verbindungsaufbau scheitern, wiederholen Sie Schritt 1 bis Schritt3. Erweitern eines bestehenden Netzwerks: Schritt 1. Drücken und halten Sie die Setuptaste für länger als 10 Sekunden. Sie können die Taste loslassen wenn alle 3 LED`s erloschen sind und das Gerät neu startet. Hinweis: Die Setup Funktion wird nach 120 Sekunden automatisch beendet. Schritt 5. Sollte die Verbindung fehlschlagen wiederholen Sie bitte Schritt 1-3. Verlassen eines Netzwerks: Schritt 1. På pc en: mindst 1 fri Ethernet port til 500 Mbps PLC Pass Through. 2. Din pc må ikke være indstillet til andre netværk. Dette betyder at: a. Ingen andre netværksklienter end Microsoft Network, Client for Netware og Personal Web Server må være installeret. b. Ingen netværksforbindelser bortset fra printerdeling til Microsoft Network eller Personal Web Server er installeret. c. Ingen netværksprotokoller bortset fra Microsoft TCI/IP, IPX/SPX, NetBEUI eller NET BIOS understøttelse til IPX/SPX er installeret. 3. Netværksinstallationen kræver disse to trin: a. Installation af 500 Mbps PLC-Pass Through. b. Gentag processen for hver pc på netværket. 4. Kontrollér at du har følgende til hver pc-installation: a. Installations guide til 500 Mbps PLC Pass Through b. 500 Mbps PLC Pass Through c. Ethernet-netværkskabel (CAT5). 5. Lær tilslutningerne på Powerlinen at kende: a. Der er kun 1 Ethernet-port på enheden, denne bruges til tilslutning af pc, xdsl/router, kabelmodem eller trådløst access point (AP). 6. Begrænsninger for PLC-enheder: a. For at leve op til sikkerhedskrav er max. afstand imellem Powerline Dansk 26

enheder begrænset til 200 m og må kun bruges inden døre. Over 200 m vil man opleve datatab og reduktion i signalstyrke. b. Brug altid den nærmeste kilde og undgå at bruge forlængerledninger og stikdåser. Hvert led der bringer dig længere væk fra kilden (din elinstallation) vil resultere i datatab og reduktion i signalstyrke. c. Der er begrænsninger i forhold til husets elinstallation. Nogle fasehop er måske ikke mulige og vil resultere i datatab og reduktion i signalstyrke. Installationsguide Bemærk: Sæt ikke produktet til en stikdåse eller strømspareskinne da disse kan indeholde filtrer som kan skade signalet. Undgå også at placere produktet ved siden af støjende produkter såsom mobiltelefonopladere, halogenlys, energisparepærer, stationære computere, støvsugere og lign. Det kan resultere i dårlig overførselshastighed. Det er dog muligt at tilslutte den støjende enhed til gennemgangsstikket der selv vil filtrere støjen og forbedre Powerline-kommunikationen. Installation af en pc på Powerline-netværket. Brug et medfølgende CAT5 Ethernet-kabel og tilslut det imellem pc en og Powerline enheden. Tilslut Powerline enheden til en strømstikkontakt. PWR dioden vil nu lyse. Gentag trin 1 og 2 hvis flere enheder skal tilsluttes. PLC-ACT dioden vil begynde at blinke når der kommer datasignal igennem Powerline enheden. ETH-ACT dioden vil begynde at lyse når der kommer datasignal igennem Ethernet-kablet. Deling af xdsl eller kabelmodem med Internet-service adgang. 1. Tilslut et Powerline-produkt til bredbåndsrouteren. a. Tilslut enheden til et strømudtag. b. Tilslut det medfølgende Ethernetkabel til netværkstikket på Powerline enheden og isæt den anden ende af kablet til en ledig port på routeren. 2. PLC Pass Through har eget filter der beskytter mod strømtoppe. Den går i standby hvis enheden tilsluttes strøm og ingen netværksforbindelse er detekteret indenfor 60 sekunder. Hvis du fjerner netværkskablet vil enheden også gå i standby efter 60 sekunder. I standby er PLC og ETH dioderne ikke tændte. Tryk knapper: (gælder kun for modeller med tryk knapper) Tryk knap-funktioner er slået fra under standby. Dansk 28

Opsætning via Setup -knap: Første installation 1. Tryk og hold Setup -knappen nede i mindst 10 sekunder. Du kan slippe knappen når alle dioder slukker og enheden genstarter. Standard netværksindstillingerne fjernes. 2. Gentag Trin 1 for at fjerne netværksindstillingerne på flere enheder. 3. På begge enheder trykkers der i 1-3 sekunder på Setup. Nu vil begge enheders Power -diode blinke. Begge enheder vil begynde at kommunikere og forsøge at indstille et privatnetværk. De vil fuldføre opsætningen i løbet inden for 10 sekunder. Begge enheder vil slukke alle dioder og genstarte. Bemærk: Timeout for opsætningen er 120 sekunder. 4. Hvis dette ikke virker, gentag trin 1-3 Sådan tilføjer du en ekstra enhed til dit eksisterende private netværk: 1. Sæt en ny enhed i stikkontakten. Tryk og hold Setup -knappen nede i mindst 10 sekunder for at fjerne standard netværksindstillingerne. 2. På den ny enhed: Hold Setup -knappen nede i 1-3 sekunder. Den ny enhed vil nu begynde med at kommunikere med enheden fra det eksisterende netværk og forsøge at tilslutte sig netværket. Tilslutningen er fuldført i løbet af max. 10 sekunder.
