The pneumatic slow-motion conveyance of carbon black in a newly conceived bypass conveying line In the past, carbon black was almost exclusively conveyed by screws, redlers, bucket systems and conveyor belts, which are meanwhile almost completely replaced by pneumatic conveyance. The advantages are convincing: dust-free operation in an encapsulated system only few mechanically moved machine parts maintenance reduced to a minimum most reduced noise/environmental load cleaning of pipes for the change to other carbon black types by conveying air without pipe opening space-saving installation also when changing from mechanic to pneumatic conveyance operating safety proved by reference plants installed throughout the world. From the three conveying methods: suction/pressure plants with reduced material charge (2 3 kg carbon black/1 kg air) medium pressure conveying (5 10 kg carbon black/1 kg air) dense phase conveying (more than 20 kg carbon black/1 kg air) priority is given to the dense phase conveying because of the only little destruction of the carbon black pellets, and this system is specially applied as slow motion conveyance with gas outlet velocity of 5 10 m/s at the end of the pipe. State of the art: By reducing the transport velocity the average increase in fines amounts only to 5 7 % per conveyance (at a conveying distance of about 100 m and a pellet hardness exceeding 25 g), whereas with suction or medium pressure conveyance, the percentage of fines may increase by 20 40 % due to the conveying speed of 18 30 m/s. The term fines means the quantity of generated dust passing a screen of mesh width 0.125 mm. The trouble-free slow-motion conveying of granulated carbon black is only possible by the use of controlled secondary air admitted at distances of 0.5 1.0 m along the whole conveying line. The finals velocity retains constant.

Function In the Overflow valve the forces of the conveying pressure and of adjustable spring are balanced with the bypass pressure. If a plug passes the Overflow valve, the line pressure within the plug decreases and by-pass air is injected through the open valve into the plug. In this way, the by-pass air enters the conveying line only there where it is needed for plug fluidization.
