German-language services have been available every Sunday at 9:30am. The only exceptions being when Pastor Dyck is not available or we have a combined service for a festival or special event. For the past few years, Church Council has been working to make the service in German more accessible for those who appreciate it the most, especially our seniors. You may recall a few years ago we tried an afternoon service, once a month and at other times services in the parish hall (to avoid climbing the stairs). We are thankful for the feedback regarding these efforts. A factor for many seniors is asking a friend, children or grandchildren for a ride to church, but often these people are not fluent in German. While family cherish being able to share in the service with their parent or grandparent, Deutschsprachige Gottesienste finden jeden Sonntag um 9:30 Uhr statt. Ausnahmen werden nur gemacht, wenn Pastor Dyck abwesend ist oder wenn wir einen gemeinsamen Gottesdienst anlaesslich eines besonderen Festes oder speziellen Ereignisses feiern. Seit einigen Jahren versucht der Kirchenvorstand, die deutschen Gottesdienste denjenigen zugaenglicher zu machen, die sie am meisten schaetzen, naemlich unseren Senioren. Vielleicht erinnern Sie sich daran, dass wir vor einigen Jahren Nachmittagsgottesdienste in der Gemeindehalle einfuehrten, um das Treppensteigen zu vermeiden. Wir danken Ihnen fuer Kommentare ueber diese Bemuehungen. Viele Senior sind abhaengig von Freunden, Kindern oder Enkeln, sie in die Kirche zu fahren, aber oft koennen diese Leute nicht genug Deutsch, um dem Gottesdienst zu folgen. Waehrend der gemeinsame Kirchenbesuch fuer Grosseltern oder Eltern geschaetzt wird, geht die Botschaft oft durch mangelnde German-Language Services at 9:30 a.m. some of the message is often lost due to language. To encourage our seniors to join family members at church or have a friend bring them to church, Council is testing out a new format for languages at the 9:30 service. Beginning on the Sunday after All Saints Day (Sun, Nov. 1), on every second Sunday (see the plan below) the 9:30am service will be German, with key English parts. On the alternate Sundays, the 9:30am service will be all in German, the same as it is presently. This means that on those Sundays when the 9:30 service includes English, the following parts of the service will be in English: one of the lessons, the Gospel reading and sermon, as well as having the prayers for various concerns alternate between German and English (like they do when we have a combined service). Um es Senioren zu ermoeglichen, den Gottesdienst gemeinsam mit Familienmitgliedern oder Freunden zu besuchen, moechte der Kirchenvostand ein neues Sprachformat des Gottesdienstes um 9:30 ausprobieren. Ab Sonntag, den 1. November (Allerheiligen) wird der 9:30 Gottesdienst jeden zweiten Sonntag (wie auf dem unten angefuehrten Plan) in Deutsch mit einigen besonderen englischen Elementen gehalten gehalten. An den alternativen Sonntagen wird der 9:30 Gottesdienst, wie bis jetzt, nur in Deutsch gehalten. Das bedeutet, dass an jedem zweiten Sonntag folgende Teile des Gottesdienstes in Englisch sein werden: eine der Lesungen, das Evangelium und die Predigt, und die Fuerbittengebete werden (wie bei einem gemeinsamen- Gottesdienst) in Deutsch und Englisch abwechseln. On Nov. 22 there is only one service in English (Pastor Dyck is away). On Nov. 29, a combined German-English service at 10 (ten) am, followed by the Weihnachtsmarkt opening. sein. Included were wine, salad and delicious garlic bread. The Italian atmosphere was romantic and lively, especially with the Italian music playing. Our special thanks to Kathy Hedrich for her initiative on this project and the many helpers who cooked, baked (bread), served, and cleaned up afterwards. Special thanks to those who donated some of the food and wine. The event cleared $800 and this provided extra cash for payments due at the end of June (like the Insurance premium). Another evening of fellowship and fundraising is being planned for the dark days of winter when most of us are dreaming of fun in the sun! Stay tuned. 3
SunDaY SchooL confirmation class StuDent ministry Children Welcome! Teenagers Welcome! Students & Faculty Welcome! Sunday School began on Sept. 13. But more children are always welcome. Note, however, that you must be registered by Nov. 8 to participate in the Christmas Pageant. Just come into church with your children, sit with your children, and the children will leave together from the church with their teachers. Our thanks to Suzanne Rey for her enthusiasm and leadership last year and again this year. A few more teachers are needed. Consider signing up. Registration deadline: September 25, 2013 Secretary@SaintJohnsLutheranMontreal.org Montreal Lutheran Council invites you for a Visit to KAHNAWAKE Saturday, October 31 The Montreal Ministry Area in response to the Eastern Synod Assembly action directing us to get to know our First Nations neighbours would like to begin our acquaintance at Kahnawake. Tour of Kahnawake Museum and Welcoming Centre at 10 a.m. to about noon. This is an opportunity to learn about the history of our local First Nations neighbours and about some of their present-day concerns. Cost is $5.00 per person. There will be a sign-up sheet at the church. Space is limited. Our group will stay in the community for lunch at a local restaurant. At the lunch there will also be discussion of the National Convention repudiation of the Doctrine of Discovery. 4 St-John s Student Group meets regularly, and welcomes all souls at all times and in all places in search of good food, good conversation & spiritual edification. Adam Smith continues as co-ordinator, but will be away for medical reasons in autumn. Activities get started with a blessing of students on Sunday, Sept. 20. Students are invited to the Oktoberfest on Sept. 26. A special Student Ministry sponsored event is the educational Luther Table-talk Pub Night on Fri., Oct. 16. It will offer pub-style talks on Luther, original 16th century pub music and lots more. Our traditional Thanksgiving Dinner will be on Monday, Oct. 12. Student tickets are also available for the Reformation Dinner, Oct. 25. Students also receive special tickets to the Weihnachtsmarkt on the First Sun. of Advent. We take time to listen to their stories and most importantly, for those that request it, we have a prayer. Preparation (making sandwiches, coffee, packing up) starts at 6 pm. There is a moment for prayer before we head out on this ministry to the homeless.

Not just Beer and Wurst, but learning about Luther A 16th century feel made real with authentic reformation-era pub music and table-talk by our Luther experts, Jenson and Carty. A chance to ask questions, play the question game, and hear authentic Luther insults (to those who dare criticize). When we say authentic, we mean AUTHENTIC: In 1522, on his way to Wittenberg, Luther stopped at the pub known as the Bären (the Bear) and held discussions with students. The event was turned into a legend by the painting seen here. The story has it that Luther disguised himself so that the students wouldn t recognise him. Imagine their surprise the next day in Wittenberg when they realised that their drinking buddy was the Revd Dr. Martin Luther, their professor! Luther was a frequent guest of the Bären in Jena and held many discussions there with reformation theologians and the locals. WATER LEAK If you have not been a visitor to the ladies bathroom, then let us tell you about the water pipe that leaked on August 31. An old water pipe that had been capped opened and leaked water on the ceiling causing it to collapse (about a 1 meter rectangular hole). Fortunately the incident was over before too much damage was done and a plumber was called to install a new, proper cap.
