3 InEquality: The Merits and Limits of the Legal System UnGleichheit: Leistung und Grenzen des Rechts Democracy promises to protect the legal equality of its citizens. Is this promise still being upheld today? Is the legal system still fit for purpose in the face of growing inequality? The regime which civilises our society appears to be weakened and is falling under suspicion of being the plaything of powerful minority interests. From employment law to the protection of intellectual property via tenancy law the law draws a red line where the interests of strongly opposed counterparts clash. Who influences the application of the law? Where and how is this application currently being redrawn? The Alpbach Legal Symposium will explore the achievements and limitations of the law in terms of dealing with inequality. Legal-political ideas which enable the protection of minority rights and preemptively foster behaviour in conformity with the law on behalf of the powerful on a national, European and global level will take centre stage. Die Demokratie verspricht, die Rechtsgleichheit der Bürgerinnen und Bürger zu wahren. Gilt dieses Versprechen heute noch? Wie leistungsfähig ist das Recht im Hinblick auf wachsende Ungleichheit? Das Regelwerk, das unsere Gesellschaft zivilisiert, wirkt geschwächt und steht im Verdacht, Spielball partikularer Interessen zu sein. Vom Arbeitsrecht über das Mietrecht bis zum Schutz von geistigem Eigentum dort, wo die Interessen unterschiedlich starker Kontrahenten aufeinanderprallen, zieht das Recht eine rote Linie. Wer verschafft sich Einfluss auf die Linienführung? Wo wird sie gegenwärtig neu gezeichnet? Die Alpbacher Rechtsgespräche loten die Leistungen und Grenzen des Rechts im Umgang mit Ungleichheit aus. Im Mittelpunkt stehen rechtspolitische Ideen, die es auf nationaler, europäischer und globaler Ebene möglich machen, die Rechte der Schwächeren zu wahren und präventiv das rechtskonforme Verhalten der Stärkeren zu fördern. 2

10 Cultural Programme Wednesday, Culture 19:00 19:30 Congress Centrum Alpbach, Trichter Exhibition Simply Alpbach The Great Transfer. A Performative Installation Alpbach pur Der große Ausgleich. Eine performative Installation In the context of the current problems faced by Europe, the contribution of the Social Design Studio addresses the necessity of questioning thinking processes which only benefit Europe. Here an introduction in their own words: Embedded in the decorative village of Alpbach and the exclusive getaway scenario of the Tyrolian Alps, the Forum functions mainly as a moderator for existing political, economical and social hierarchies. Connecting this problematique to the topic of InEquality as a result of unquestioned growth and construction based upon destruction, we will make a minimal intervention, illustrating the built environment as a complex landscape of private lives, focusing on the link between thought processes and built environment by layering notions of home. We want to open up the possibility of a polylogue conversation by inviting excluded or marginalised points of view. Throughout the 2 1/2 weeks of the Forum, the students will work in the heart of the Congress Centre, reflecting on the position and function of art as critical decor. Im Kontext der Probleme, denen Europa aktuell begegnet, unterstreicht der Beitrag des Social Design Studios die Notwendigkeit, Denkprozesse in Frage zu stellen, die ausschließlich Vorteile für Europa im Blick haben. Hier ihre Einführung in ihren eigenen Worten: Eingebettet in das dekorative Bergdorf Alpbach und dem exklusiven Auszeit-Szenario der Tiroler Alpen, fungiert das Forum Alpbach vor allem als Moderator für existierende politische, wirtschaftliche und soziale Hierarchien. Diese Problematik wird verbunden mit dem Thema der UnGleichheit als Ergebnis von unhinterfragtem Wachstumsstreben und der Prämisse von Konstruktion basierend auf Destruktion. In einer minimalen Intervention wird die Baukultur als komplexe Landschaft von Privatleben entworfen. Dabei liegt der Fokus auf der Verbindung zwischen Denkprozessen und der Baukultur durch die Überlagerung verschiedener Sichtweisen auf den Begriff Zuhause. Wir wollen damit die Möglichkeit einer polylogen Konversation eröffnen und exkludierte oder marginalisierte Positionen in den Diskurs integrieren. Während der 2 ½ Wochen des Forums wird die Gruppe im Zentrum des Kongresses arbeiten und dabei die Rolle und Funktion von Kunst als kritischem Dekor reflektieren. Her artistic work discusses questions of constructing a home between countries, symbols and religions. Even as a child she was fascinated by the Alpbach Farmers' Museum, which has remained unchanged for many years. Maybe this personal connection was necessary in order for her to have access to this place of tradition. In 2015 the Schulz-Stübner-Trust awarded her a prize for painting. The exhibit is curated by Robert Gander and Monika Sommer. An accompanying catalogue will be published. Opening hours: Monday, Thursday and Sunday between und Until the 4th of September the artist will give a daily guided tour at 16:00. 18 Alpbach by Public Transport From and to Alpbach there is a daily public bus line (bus line 4074), as well as a free shuttle service (from Wörgl via Alpbach to Inneralpbach). In addition, there is a free night shuttle from Böglerhof bus-stop to Inneralpbach-Reith- Kramsach-Brixlegg. The shuttle service is offered free of charge thanks to the support of our partner ÖBB-Postbus GmbH. Upon registration at your accommodation you will receive the Alpbachtal Seenland Card which enables you to use the public bus free of charge during the entire duration of the Forum.
