8 Caring for your hearing aids Hearing aids are sensitive electronic devices susceptible to moisture and wax. Please remember to keep your hearing aids clean and dry at all times. Please notice the following directions to help you in taking care for your aids: When not wearing your hearing aids, open the battery door to allow any moisture to evaporate.this also helps extend battery life. Store your hearing aids in a safe, dry place, away from direct sunlight and avoid extreme temperatures. Do not leave your hearing aids in the bathroom while showering. When you sweat, be sure to take your hearing aids off and allow them to dry for a minimum of 15 minutes before putting them back on. Ear wax is natural and common, but it can cause your hearing aids to feedback ( whistle ) or malfunction. It is important to follow the cleaning instructions for the thin tube and soft dome (page 27). Do not use water, alcohol or other liquid agents to clean hearing aids as they may damage them. If the hearing aids become wet, do not attempt to dry them in an oven or microwave. Open the battery door, remove the battery and let the hearing aids dry naturally for hours. If you live in a humid climate or are around persistent moisture, consider purchasing a low cost hearing aid dehumidifier or dryer. Ask your dispenser/audiologist for information. Ask your doctor to remove excessive wax from your ears, or ask if you can use a prescription free kit to remove ear wax. 8 English

9 Remove your hearing aids before using hair spray, spray perfume or shaving lotions, as these items can clog or damage your hearing aids. Do not drop your hearing aids or knock them against hard surfaces. After sporting, be sure to take off your hearing aids and allow them to dry for a minimum of 15 minutes before putting them back on. 10 What is Xylo? The Xylo is a thin tube Behind The Ear hearing aid (BTE) for mild to moderate hearing loss. The Xylo includes the following features: Discrete transparent thin tube. Open fit dome for minimal occlusion (this is when you hear the sound of your own voice louder than you are normally used to) Suitable for cell phone use. Suitable for common outdoor activities. Easy to use and maintain. Contemporary design in three different colors. An adaptive feedback cancellation system - this prevents spontaneous whistling of the device which could happen as you insert it in your ear. As soon as you have placed the thin tube in your ear canal, the whistling will stop and the adaptive feedback system will protect against feedback. An adaptive noise reduction system - this improves the hearing comfort in noisy environments. Directional microphone system - used to improve hearing in noisy environments. Four different memories - Store up to four different listening situation settings. When programming the Xylo, you may request that your dispenser programs the memories to your special environmental needs. The Xylo also features telecoil connectivity (T-coil) which allows audio sources to be inductively connected to the hearing aid from devices such as special telephones, FM systems (with neck loops), and induction loop systems (also called hearing loops ). 10 English

12 Xylo anatomy 1 Microphones - sound is received by the microphones for amplification. 2 Speaker - delivers amplified sound into the thin tube. 3 Multifunctional switch - switches between listening programs or volume levels. 4 Battery door / on and off switch - closing the door with inserted battery will turn on the hearing aid. Opening the door slightly to the first detent will turn off the hearing aid. 5 Serial number - every hearing aid has a unique serial number. 6 Thin tube and soft dome - each hearing aid is fitted with a thin tube and soft dome that connects to the hearing aid speaker. 13 Xylo Behind The Ear hearing aid The Xylo uses an advanced programmable microprocessor to ensure that the processing and amplification of the sound is adapted to your particular hearing loss. The casing of the Xylo is constructed from durable medical grade plastics. For the maintenance of the casing, please refer to the chapter Maintenance and use (page 26). Battery compartment This compartment houses the battery that provides the power for your Xylo. The Xylo can be switched off by slightly opening the battery door to the first detent. Open the door completely to replace the battery. Thin tubes Sound from the Xylo is guided into the ear canal by a thin plastic tube. The tubes have a left and right orientation. Left and right thin tubes can be identified by their code color: Red: right ear Blue: left ear The thin tubes are available in various sizes. It is important that the correct length is selected to make sure that the soft dome is positioned correctly in the ear and to position the Xylo correctly on the outer ear. Your dispenser will select the correct length thin tube and soft dome. English 13

14 Xylo anatomy Microphone openings Sound is picked up by the microphone openings for processing and amplification by the Xylo. Sounds from both microphones may be electronically processed to enhance sound arriving from the front to improve hearing in noisy environments. Speaker (receiver) opening The processed and amplified sound emits through the speaker opening in the device and is directed by the thin tube and soft dome towards the eardrum (the eardrum is a thin membrane that separates the external ear from the middle ear). Soft dome The Xylo uses soft domes available in various sizes. The size of the soft dome to be used depends on the size of your ear canal. Choosing the correct size soft dome for your Xylo is extremely important for comfort and functionality. Your dispenser will determine the soft dome that suits your needs best during the fitting of the Xylo. The soft dome of the Xylo should be replaced when necessary. It is important to check the soft dome daily for earwax or damage (tear). For daily maintenance and cleaning, please refer to the chapter Maintenance and use (page 26). 14 English

15 Sound opening The processed and amplified sound is guided through the thin tube and directed to the eardrum through the opening of the soft dome. Open fit soft domes Four openings can be found in the open domes. When an open soft dome is used, less amplification in the lower frequency range will be noticed. Battery The Xylo uses a type 312 hearing aid battery, indicated with a brown sticker. The battery life varies, depending on the amount of hearing aid use, but is typically about 7-10 days when used 16 hours a day. Always use batteries that are indicated as hearing aid batteries. 16 Daily use of the Xylo Before you start with any of the actions mentioned in the chapters Daily use of the Xylo and Maintenance and use, please make sure using clean hands and a clean, horizontal working surface. Insert the thin tube in the soft dome Take off the old dome using your fingernails and by pulling. Push the new dome onto the thin tube. Give it a push to secure it safely. 16 English

17 Inserting/replacing the battery Gently pull open the battery door with your fingernail and remove the used battery. Do not hold down or press the multifunctional switch while opening or closing the battery door, as this may damage the hearing aid. Place the battery into the battery door as indicated in the picture with the tab ( + sign) facing up. While holding the battery in place, carefully peel off the plastic tab. English 17

18 Daily use of the Xylo To fully activate the battery, wait a few seconds before gently closing the battery door. If the door does not close easily, check to see if the battery was inserted properly. Turning your hearing aids on/off The battery door in the hearing aid acts as an ON/OFF switch and allows access to the battery. When the door is fully closed, the hearing aid is on. When the door is open, the hearing aid is off. ON: Simply close the battery door with a battery in it. OFF: When you re not wearing your hearing aids, keep the battery door open to extend battery life. You do not need to remove the battery. Fully opening the battery door allows moisture to evaporate. 18 English

19 Low battery warning When the battery voltage nears the end of the battery life, the hearing aid will detect this condition and provide a low battery warning signal. A warning signal of three double beeps will sound every ten minutes, indicating that the battery needs to be replaced. When the battery is empty, another warning signal of six double beeps will sound and your hearing aid will automatically turn off. Identifying left and right hearing aid Before wearing your hearing aids, please identify the corresponding hearing aid for the left or right ear. The hearing aid fitted for your right ear will have a thin tube marked with red writing and a left will have a thin tube marked with blue writing. Also, the hearing aid fitted for your right ear has a red dot inside the battery door. The hearing aid fitted for your left ear has no marking inside the battery door. Inserting the Xylo into the ear When inserting the hearing aid into the ear, make sure that the soft dome is fitted on the thin tube. Place your hearing aid over the top of your ear until it rests securely behind your ear. While holding the Xylo in place, insert the soft dome into your ear canal, and curl/tuck the retention loop along the body of your ear. English 19

20 Daily use of the Xylo This retention loop will eventually tuck in easily, as body heat helps it to form to the shape of your ear. 20 English The soft dome should be completely or almost completely inserted in the ear canal. Use your fingernail to push the tube (rather than the soft dome) gently into the ear canal.

21 This will help the soft dome to go deeper. Proper insertion of the soft dome is key to getting enough loudness and avoid whistling. If you wear eyeglasses, put your glasses on first and then put your Xylo hearing aid on. Allergic reactions to hearing aids are unlikely. However, if you experience skin irritation, redness, or soreness in or around your ears, please contact your physician. Changing program and volume settings If you have worn hearing aids before, you may have used different programs for different environments. The Xylo has 4 selectable programmable memories to accommodate different settings. English 21

22 Daily use of the Xylo Program control The multifunctional switch allows you to choose between either four program settings or volume level. Your dispenser will set the four available programs to your needs. Spend some time to determine which one you like best. Use the program that sounds best the majority of the time. Within each program, you can also use the volume control to make sounds louder or softer if you wish. Simply press and hold the multifunction switch up or down for two seconds to change the program setting. The hearing aid will beep to let you know which program has been selected. Please keep the Xylo in your ear to hear the beep(s). Program 1 (quiet situations) 1 beep 2 (speech in noise) 2 beeps 3 (using telephones) 3 beeps 4 (listening to music) 4 beeps Volume control The multifunctional switch also allows you to choose between ten volume levels. To increase the volume, press and quickly release the top of the multifunctional switch. To decrease the volume, press and quickly release the bottom of the multifunctional switch. You will hear one beep when you reach the maximum or minimum volume setting. 22 English

23 It is normal to hear a whistling sound when you hold the hearing aid in your hand, or when you place your hand over your ear. However, once the soft dome is all the way in the ear canal, you should be able to wear your hearing aids at a comfortable volume level without whistling. If your hearing aid whistles, either reinsert the softdome in the ear or turn the volume down a few steps. Volume levels Using with telephones and cellular phones Traditional corded phones, cordless phones and cell phones: First, try to use the phone as you normally would hold it. If you find that you cannot hear well, move the handset up slightly to find the position that sounds best to you. If you encounter whistling, tilt the phone handset at an angle until the whistling stops. It may help to turn the volume up on your phone. Practice using the telephone with someone familiar to you, and move the phone around a bit to get the best sound. If your phone is labeled Hearing Aid Compatible, it works with the telecoil English 23

24 Daily use of the Xylo Directional functionality The directional feature can enhance hearing in noisy environments by amplifying sound arriving from the front, which is usually the position of your conversation partner(s). The feature attenuates sounds from other directions. In the Xylo 6, this feature may be set to Adaptive mode which automatically switches to the directional feature based on the surrounding noise levels. The directional feature is available in any memory and is set by your dispenser. Telecoil functionality The Xylo is equipped with a telecoil which receives inductive signals directly from the telephone and converts it to sound. The telecoil setting turns off the microphone, enabling you to hear more clearly the sound from the telephone. After finishing your phone call, change back to your preferred program to turn on the hearing aid microphone again. Other uses of a telecoil Many people use the telecoil feature with assistive listening devices called FM or audio loops. If you go to events where the room is looped, you can use your telecoil to pick up and amplify sound. Set your hearing aids to the telecoil program. When the speaker talks into the public address system s microphone, the 24 English

25 sound will be picked up by the telecoil in your hearing aid via the loop. The sound then goes right into your hearing aid(s). It will minimize the background noise and allow you to hear the speaker more clearly. After the event, change back to your preferred program to turn on the hearing aid microphone again. Note: You may hear interference while in the telecoil setting. There may be a buzzing sound from the devices like Fluorescent lighting, televisions, and computer screens.try to move away from these devices when using the telecoil. English 25

26 Maintenance and use Replacing the thin tube and soft domes Your dispenser will initially connect the thin tube & soft dome during your first fitting session. For optimal performance, replace the thin tube every three months. The soft dome may need replacement more often due to ear wax and moisture. A recommended replacement interval for the soft dome is 30 days. Removing the thin tube and soft dome from hearing aid: Grasp the thin tube near the hearing instrument; gently turn ~90 degrees and pull to remove the thin tube from the hearing instrument. Note: Do not bend the thin tube and soft dome back and forth to remove it English

27 Attaching the thin tube and soft dome to the hearing instrument: Gently push the hearing aid end of the thin tube onto the hearing aid until it snaps into position. Cleaning the thin tube and soft dome Between replacements, you need to clean the thin tube and soft dome with a cleaning wire. Thin tube: Remove the thin tube and soft dome from the device. Thread the cleaning wire through the thin tube, starting at the hearing aid end, until it comes out at the soft dome end. Pull the cleaning wire all the way through. Be sure to wipe off the wire before the next cleaning. Clean the soft dome with a dry cloth. English 27

28 Maintenance and use Note: Ensure the wire goes through the thin tube in only one direction, from hearing aid end to soft dome end. Do not reverse the wire back through the ear tube. Soft dome: Soft domes should be removed and cleaned separately from the thin tube. Clean daily with a soft and dry tissue, and weekly with a toothbrush. Use a clean soft bristled toothbrush and brush across the top of the soft dome until the wax is removed. Rolling the dome between your thumb and finger may help remove larger amounts of dry wax quickly Using warm water on the soft dome may help if there is a large amount of soft wax to be removed. Make sure the soft dome is completely dry before reinserting the thin tube. In case of severe dirt or damage of the material, the soft dome should be replaced. 28 English

29 Storage At night: Open the battery door slightly to the first detent to shut the device off. This will increase the operational life of the battery. Store the device in a secure location outside of its box. This allows for the evaporation of any moisture in the device. Long-term storage: When not using your hearing instrument for longer periods of time, clean the module and soft dome before storing them inside the carrying box. Always remove the battery from the device during long term storage. Short-term storage: Use the provided carrying box when you want to remove the device from the ear temporarily. Attention: do not carry the hearing aid unprotected in your pocket, purse, or bag to prevent damage to the device. English 29

30 FDA Warning The following additional information is provided in compliance with U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA regulations): Warning to hearing aid dispensers. A hearing aid dispenser should advise a prospective hearing aid user to consult promptly with a licensed physician (preferably an ear specialist) before dispensing a hearing aid if the hearing aid dispenser determines through inquiry, actual observation, or review of any other available information concerning the prospective user, that the prospective user has any of the following conditions: (I) Visible congenital or traumatic deformity of the ear; (II) History of active drainage from the ear within the previous 90 days; (III) History of sudden or rapidly progressive hearing loss within the previous 90 days; (IV) Acute or chronic dizziness; (V) Unilateral hearing loss of sudden or recent onset within the previous 90 days; (VI) Audiometric air bone gap equal to or greater than 15 decibels at 500 hertz (Hz), 1,000 Hz, and 2,000 Hz; (VII) Visible evidence of significant cerumen accumulation or a foreign body in the ear canal; (VIII) Pain or discomfort in the ear. RF Immunity level These hearing instruments have a cell phone immunity rating of M3. For your cell phone to be compatible with these hearing instruments, the cell phone needs an immunity rating of M1 or higher. Please consult your cell phone specifications for your cell phone immunity rating. 30 English

31 Important notice for prospective hearing aid users Good health practice requires that a person with hearing loss have a medical evaluation by a licensed physician (preferably a physician who specializes in diseases of the ear) before purchasing a hearing aid. Licensed physicians who specialize in diseases of the ear are often referred to as otolaryngologists, otologists or otorhinolaryngologists. The purpose of medical evaluation is to assure that all medically treatable conditions that may affect hearing are identified and treated before the hearing aid is purchased. Following the medical evaluation, the physician will give you a written statement that states that your hearing loss has been medically evaluated and that you may be considered a candidate for a hearing aid. The physician will refer you to an audiologist or a hearing aid dispenser, as appropriate, for a hearing aid evaluation. The audiologist or hearing aid dispenser will conduct a hearing aid evaluation to assess your ability to hear with and without a hearing aid. The hearing aid evaluation will enable the audiologist or dispenser to select and fit a hearing aid to your individual needs. If you have reservations about your ability to adapt to amplification, you should inquire about the availability of a trial-rental or purchase-option program. Many hearing aid dispensers now offer programs that permit you to wear a hearing aid for a period of time for a nominal fee, after which you may decide if you want to purchase the hearing aid. 32 FDA Warning Federal law restricts the sale of hearing aids to those individuals who have obtained a medical evaluation from a licensed physician. Federal law permits a fully informed adult to sign a waiver statement declining the medical evaluation for religious or personal beliefs that preclude consultation with a physician. The exercise of such a waiver is not in your best health interest and its use is strongly discouraged. and experience to assist in the evaluation and rehabilitation of a child with hearing loss. Children with hearing loss In addition to seeing a physician for a medical evaluation, a child with hearing loss should be directed to an audiologist for evaluation and rehabilitation since hearing loss may cause problems in language development and the educational and social growth of a child. An audiologist is qualified by training 32 English

34 Warnings The thin tube and the soft dome are essential parts of the Xylo. Never use the product without the thin tube and/or soft dome. Once the device has been fitted to one specific ear, please do not wear the device in the other ear. This may lead to a deterioration of hearing performance. Never use damaged thin tubes and / or dirty soft domes. This can negatively affect the hearing performance or result in an uncomfortable fit. Replace the soft dome of your device regularly, even if it is not visibly damaged or dirty, see chapter Maintenance and use (page 26). When using the Xylo for the first time, start with a continuous wearing period of 4 hours and subsequently increase wearing time with one hour a day. When you experience sensations of pain, continuous irritation or itching, do not use the devices before you receive professional advice. If your complaints persist, please consult a physician. Have your ears and your hearing checked regularly, both during the beginning period of wearing the hearing aids and afterwards. lf for some reason it is not possible to remove the Xylo from your ear, consult your dispenser/ audiologist or a physician. Do not use the Xylo in the following cases A medical history of the ear. Exostoses (bulging bone growth) in the ear canal. Heavy earwax secretion. 34 English

35 The Xylo may never be: Dropped Exposed to moisture or water. Immersed in water. Used while swimming, taking a shower, bathing or sauna. Cleaned wet Exposed to extreme high temperatures, such as when using a hair dryer. Worn in mines or other environments where explosion risk is high. Exposed to X-ray radiation or strong magnetic fields, such as during medical investigation. Worn in the places where hairspray (hairdresser) or solvents (such as dye) are used. Personal care products Special care should be taken when using makeup, cream, body oil, gels, hairspray and similar products, while you are wearing or inserting the Xylo. They may smudge your device and contribute to clogging of the microphone openings. Children and pets Keep the Xylo away from small children and pets. ln case of swallowing one of the components, there is a choking hazard to small children. Battery warning information Never place batteries in your mouth. lf a battery is swallowed, please consult a doctor as soon as possible. If available, bring the battery packaging for identification purposes. English 35

36 Warnings If the content of a hearing aid battery leaks out of the casing and touches the skin, wash and rinse and the exposed skin with soap and water. If irritation occurs, please consult a medical professional. Battery disposal Please dispose used batteries in an environmentally friendly way. Used batteries and old hearing aids need to be collected and disposed as chemical waste or as electronic devices for recycling purposes. 36 English

46 Zorgdragen voor uw hoortoestellen Hoortoestellen zijn gevoelige elektronische apparaten die gevoelig zijn voor vocht en oorsmeer. Denk er alstublieft aan dat u uw hoortoestellen te allen tijde schoon en droogt houdt. Wij verzoeken u de volgende aanwijzingen te volgen om zo goed mogelijk voor uw hoortoestellen te zorgen: Als u uw hoortoestellen niet draagt, laat dan het batterijklepje open om eventueel vocht te laten verdampen. Dit verlengt ook de levensduur van de batterij. Berg uw hoortoestellen op in een veilige, droge plek, houd ze uit direct zonlicht en vermijd extreme temperaturen. Laat uw hoortoestellen niet in de badkamer liggen tijdens het douchen. Wanneer u zweet, doe dan uw hoortoestellen uit en laat ze minimaal 15 minuten drogen voordat u ze weer in doet. Oorsmeer is een natuurlijk en normaal verschijnsel, maar het kan ervoor zorgen dat uw hoortoestellen feedback (een pieptoon) geven of niet goed functioneren. Het is belangrijk de reinigingsinstructies voor de thin tube en softdome op pagina 65 te volgen. Gebruik geen water, alcohol of andere vloeibare middelen om de hoortoestellen te reinigen; u kunt ze hiermee beschadigen. Als de hoortoestellen nat worden, droog ze dan niet in een oven of magnetron. Doe het batterijklepje open, haal de batterij eruit en laat de hoortoestellen op natuurlijke wijze voor 24 tot 48 uur drogen. Als u in een vochtig klimaat woont of in een aanhoudende vochtige omgeving bent, 46 Nederlands

47 overweeg dan de aankoop van een goedkope hoortoestel-ontvochtiger of droger. Voor meer informatie hierover, vraag uw audicien of arts. Vraag uw arts overmatige oorsmeer uit uw oren te laten verwijderen, of vraag of u een hulpmiddel kunt gebruiken om oorsmeer te verwijderen (zonder doktersrecept). Doe uw hoortoestellen uit voordat u hairspray, parfum of scheerschuim gaat gebruiken; deze artikelen kunnen uw hoortoestellen verstoppen of beschadigen. Laat uw hoortoestellen niet vallen en stoot ze niet tegen harde oppervlakken. Doe na het sporten uw toestellen uit en laat ze minimaal 15 minuten drogen voordat u ze weer indoet. Nederlands 47

48 Wat is de Xylo? De Xylo is een thin tube achter-het-oor (AHO) voor licht tot matig gehoorverlies. De Xylo is voorzien de volgende kenmerken: Discrete transparante thin tube. Open aanpassing mogelijk voor minimale occlusie (het gevoel alsof uw oor verstopt zit, en/of vervorming van uw eigen stem). Bruikbaar met mobiele telefoon. Bruikbaar bij gewone buitenactiviteiten. Makkelijk te gebruiken en onderhouden. Eigentijds design in drie verschillende kleuren. Een adaptieve antifeedback schakeling - dit voorkomt spontaan fluiten van het toestel, wat voor kan komen bij het inbrengen van het toestel. De kans bestaat echter dat dit toch gebeurt tijdens het inbrengen. Zodra u de thin tube in uw gehoorgang plaatst, zal het fluiten stoppen en zal het antifeedback systeem u beschermen tegen het ontstaan van dit geluid. Een adaptieve spraak in lawaai schakeling - deze verbetert het luistercomfort in rumoerige omgevingen. Directioneel microfoon systeem - om horen in lawaaierige omgevingen te verbeteren. Vier verschillende geheugens - gebruik tot vier verschillende luisterinstellingen bij het programmeren van de Xylo. U kunt uw audicien vragen de geheugens in te stellen naar uw eigen specifieke wensen. De Xylo is ook voorzien van een luisterspoel die het mogelijk maakt via ringleidingconnectiviteit het hoortoestel direct aan te sluiten op audiobronnen zoals speciale telefoons, FM systemen (met neklussen), ringleidinginstallaties. 48 Nederlands

51 Xylo Achter Het Oor hoortoestel De Xylo maakt gebruik van een geavanceerde, programmeerbare microprocessor om te zorgen dat de bewerking en versterking van het geluid is aangepast aan uw specifieke gehoorverlies. De behuizing van de Xylo is gemaakt van duurzaam plastic van medische kwaliteit. Voor onderhoud van de behuizing, verwijzen wij naar het hoofdstuk Onderhoud en gebruik (pagina 64). Batterijcompartiment In dit compartiment zit de batterij die voor de stroomvoorziening van uw Xylo zorgt. De Xylo kan worden uitgezet door het klepje te openen tot de eerste klik. Open het klepje volledig om de batterij te vervangen. Thin tubes Geluid wordt door de Xylo de gehoorgang in geleid door een plastic thin tube (dunne buis). Bij de tubes is er onderscheid tussen de linker en de rechter versie. Linker en rechter thin tubes kunnen worden herkend aan de kleurindicatie: Rood: rechteroor Blauw: linkeroor De thin tubes zijn beschikbaar in verschillende maten. Het is belangrijk de correcte lengte te kiezen om ervoor te zorgen dat de softdome op de juiste manier in het oor wordt geplaatst en om de Xylo correct op het oor te positioneren. 52 Anatomie van de Xylo Microfoonopening De microfoon(opening) vangt het geluid op wat vervolgens door de Xylo wordt bewerkt en versterkt. Het geluid van beide microfoons wordt elektronisch verwerkt om geluid wat van voren komt te versterken, om zo horen in lawaaierige omgevingen te verbeteren. Luidsprekeropening Het bewerkte en versterkte geluid treedt naar buiten door de luidspreker in het apparaat en verplaatst zich via de thin tube en de softdome richting trommelvlies (het trommelvlies is een dun membraam dat het uitwendige oor scheidt van het middenoor). Softdome De Xylo maakt gebruik van softdomes die beschikbaar zijn in verschillende maten. De maat van de te gebruiken softdome hangt af van de grootte van uw gehoorgang. Het kiezen van de juiste maat softdome van uw Xylo is van groot belang voor comfort en functionaliteit. Uw audicien zal bij uw aanpassing bepalen welke maat softdome het best bij uw situatie past. De softdome van de Xylo dient indien nodig vervangen worden. Het is van belang dat u dagelijks controleert of de softdome verstopt of beschadigd is. Een van de meest voorkomende reparaties aan hoortoestellen is een door oorsmeer verstopte of beschadigde luidspreker. Lees voor dagelijks onderhoud en 52 Nederlands

Geluidsopening Het bewerkte en versterkte geluid wordt door de thin tube naar het trommelvlies geleid en verplaatst zich via de opening van de softdome. Open softdomes In de open softdomes zijn vier openingen te zien. Bij gebruik van een open softdome zal er minder versterking in de lage frequenties merkbaar zijn. Batterij Voor de Xylo worden hoortoestel batterijen type 312 gebruikt, voorzien van een bruine sticker. De levensduur van de batterij is afhankelijk van het gebruik van het hoortoestel; het gemiddelde is 7 tot 10 dagen, bij gebruik van 16 uur per dag. Gebruik altijd batterijen die bestemd zijn voor hoortoestellen. Nederlands 53

54 Dagelijks gebruik van de Xylo Voordat u begint met de instructies uit de hoofdstukken Dagelijks gebruik van de Xylo en Onderhoud en gebruik, is het belangrijk dat u schone handen heeft en gebruik maakt van een schoon, horizontaal werkoppervlak. De thin tube in de softdome inbrengen Haal de oude softdome van de thin tube met gebruik van uw nagels en trek aan de softdome. Schuif de nieuwe softdome op de thin tube. Duw de softdome aan zodat deze goed vastzit. 54 Nederlands

55 Plaatsen/vervangen van de batterij Trek voorzichtig met uw nagel het batterijklepje open en haal de gebruikte batterij eruit. Druk niet op de multifunctionele schakelaar en houd deze niet vast terwijl u het batterij klepje open of dicht doet; dit kan het hoortoestel beschadigen. Plaats een nieuwe batterij, zoals aangegeven in de afbeelding, in het batterijklepje met de sticker ( + teken) naar u toe. Trek, terwijl u de batterij op zijn plaats houdt, voorzichtig de sticker van de batterij. Nederlands 55

56 Dagelijks gebruik van de Xylo Om de batterij volledig te activeren, wacht een paar seconden en doe dan voorzichtig the batterijklepje dicht. Als het klepje niet goed sluit, controleer dan of de batterij wel goed is geplaatst. Uw hoortoestel uit/ aanzetten Het batterijklepje van het hoortoestel fungeert als een AAN/UIT schakelaar en geeft toegang tot de batterij. Als het klepje gesloten is, staat het hoortoestel aan. Als het klepje geopend is, staat het hoortoestel uit. AAN: Doe simpelweg het batterijklepje dicht met de batterij erin. UIT: Als u het hoortoestel niet draagt, laat dan het batterijklepje open om de levensduur van de batterij te verlengen. U hoeft de batterij er niet uit te halen. Door het batterijklepje open te laten, laat u het mogelijk aanwezige vocht verdampen. 56 Nederlands

57 Waarschuwing bij lage batterij spanning Als de batterij bijna leeg is, zal dit door het hoortoestel worden gedetecteerd en zal deze een piepsignaal geven: een waarschuwingssignaal van drie dubbele piepjes zal elke 10 minuten klinken, om aan te geven dat de batterij vervangen moet worden. Als de batterij leeg is, zal een ander waarschuwingssignaal van zes dubbele piepjes klinken en zal uw hoortoestel automatisch uitschakelen. Linker en rechter hoortoestel herkennen Voordat u uw toestellen gaat dragen, controleer eerst welk hoortoestel bij het linker- of rechteroor hoort. Het hoortoestel voor uw rechteroor heeft een thin tube met een rode markering, en de linker heeft een thin tube met een blauwe markering. Ook heeft het hoortoestel voor uw rechteroor een stip in het batterijklepje. Het hoortoestel voor het linkeroor heeft geen markering in het batterijklepje. De Xylo in het oor plaatsen Wanneer u het hoortoestel in het oor plaatst, let er dan op dat u de softdome op de thin tube is geplaatst. Plaats uw hoortoestel over de bovenkant van uw oor zodat/totdat deze stevig achter uw oor zit. Nederlands 57

58 Dagelijks gebruik van de Xylo Terwijl u de Xylo op zijn plek houdt, doet u de softdome in uw gehoorgang, en krult/ stopt u de retentielus om de oorschelp. Deze retentielus zal uiteindelijk makkelijk in te stoppen zijn, omdat uw lichaamswarmte 58 Nederlands ervoor zorgt dat deze zich aan de vorm van uw oor aanpast. De softdome dient helemaal of bijna helemaal in de gehoorgang te zitten. Gebruik uw nagels om de thin tube (liever dan de softdome) in uw gehoorgang te duwen.

59 Hierdoor kan de softdome dieper in het oor geplaatst worden. Het juist plaatsen van de softdome is zeer belangrijk om voldoende geluidssterkte te krijgen en fluiten te voorkomen. Als u een bril draagt, doe dan eerst uw bril op en doe dan uw Xylo hoortoestel in. Allergische reacties op hoortoestellen zijn zeer onwaarschijnlijk, maar als u toch last heeft van huidirritatie, roodheid of gevoeligheid in of rond uw oren, neem dan contact op met uw arts. Van programma veranderen en volume instellingen Als u eerder hoortoestellen heeft gedragen, kan het zijn dat u verschillende programma s voor verschillende omgevingen heeft gebruikt. De Xylo heeft 4 programmeerbare geheugens die geselecteerd kunnen worden om in verschillende situaties van dienst te zijn. Nederlands 59

60 Dagelijks gebruik van de Xylo Programmabesturing Met de multifunctionele schakelaar kunt u kiezen tussen de vier programma-instellingen en het geluidsniveau. Uw audicien zal de vier beschikbare programma s naar uw behoeftes instellen. Besteed wat tijd om te bepalen welk programma u het meest bevalt. Gebruik het programma dat het grootste gedeelte van de tijd het beste klinkt. In elk programma kunt u ook het volumeniveau harder of zachter zetten als u dat wilt. Druk simpelweg op de multifunctionele schakelaar en houd deze één of twee seconden naar boven of naar beneden vast om de programma-instellingen te veranderen. Het hoortoestel zal piepen om u te laten weten welk programma is geselecteerd. Houd alstublieft de Xylo in om het/de piepje(s) te kunnen horen. 60 Nederlands Programma 1 (stille situaties) 1 piepje 2 (spraak in lawaai) 2 piepjes 3 (telefoon) 3 piepjes 4 (luisteren naar muziek) 4 piepjes Volumeregeling Met de multifunctionele schakelaar kunt u kiezen tussen tien verschillende volumeniveaus. Om het geluid harder te zetten, druk de bovenkant van de tuimelschakelaar in en laat deze snel los. Om het geluid zachter te zetten, druk de onderkant van de multifunctionele schakelaar in en laat deze snel los. U hoort een piepje wanneer u het minimum of maximum van een volume instelling bereikt.

61 Het is normaal als u een fluitend geluid hoort wanneer u het hoortoestel in uw hand houdt, of wanneer u een hand over uw oor plaatst. Als de softdome of oorstukje echter helemaal in de gehoorgang is geplaatst, zou u het hoortoestel moeten kunnen dragen op een comfortabel geluidsniveau zonder dat deze gaat fluiten. Als uw hoortoestel toch gaat fluiten, plaats dan de softdome opnieuw in het oor of zet het volume een paar niveaus lager. Volume levels Gebruik van telefoons en mobiele telefoons Telefoons met een snoer, draadloze telefoons en mobiele telefoons: Probeer eerst de telefoon te gebruiken zoals u normaal zou doen. Als u vind dat u niet goed genoeg kunt horen, beweeg dan telefoonhoorn een beetje om de positie te vinden die het beste voor u klinkt. Als het toestel toch gaat fluiten, houd dan de telefoonhoorn schuin totdat het fluiten stopt. Het kan ook helpen om het geluid op de telefoon harder te zetten. Oefen het gebruik van de telefoon met iemand die vertrouwd is, en beweeg de telefoon een beetje heen en weer om het beste geluid te krijgen. Als uw telefoon het label Compatibel met hoortoestel heeft, werkt deze met de luisterspoel (zie hieronder). Nederlands 61

62 Dagelijks gebruik van de Xylo Directionele functionaliteit Luisterspoel functionaliteit De directionele functie kan het horen in lawaaierige omgevingen verbeteren door het versterken van geluiden die van voren komen, wat meestal de positie is van uw gesprekspartner. De functie verzwakt geluiden die uit andere richtingen komen. In de Xylo 6 kan deze functie in de adaptieve modus worden gezet. In deze modus schakelt het toestel automatisch naar de directionele functie, afhankelijk van het geluidsniveau. De directionele functie kan in de door u gewenste programma s worden ingesteld door uw audicien. De Xylo is voorzien van een luisterspoel optie, die direct via de telefoon elektromagnetische signalen ontvangt en deze omzet in geluid. De luisterspoel instelling schakelt de microfoon uit, zodat u het geluid van de telefoon duidelijk kunt horen. Ga nadat u het gesprek beëindigd hebt terug naar uw voorkeursprogramma om de microfoon van het hoortoestel weer aan te zetten. Ander gebruik van de luisterspoel Veel mensen gebruiken de luisterspoel optie met hoorhulpen, FM of audiolus genaamd. Als u naar een evenement gaat waar de ruimte is 62 Nederlands

63 voorzien van een ringleiding wil dat zeggen dat u uw luisterspoel kunt gebruiken om geluiden op te vangen en te versterken. Zet uw hoortoestel hiervoor in het luisterspoel programma. Wanneer de spreker in de microfoon van de geluidsinstallatie spreekt, zal het geluid via de ringleiding beschikbaar zijn voor uw luisterspoel. Het geluid gaat dan rechtstreeks uw hoortoestel(len) in. Het zal achtergrondlawaai onderdrukken en ervoor zorgen dat u de spreker duidelijker hoort. Na het evenement zet u het toestel weer terug naar het voorkeursprogramma om de microfoon van het hoortoestel weer aan te zetten. Noot: U kunt last van storing hebben in de luisterspoel instelling. Er kan een zoemend geluid hoorbaar zijn als u in de buurt komt van bijvoorbeeld TL-verlichting, televisie- en computerschermen. Probeer van deze apparaten weg te bewegen als u de luisterspoel gebruikt. Nederlands 63

64 Onderhoud en gebruik Vervanging van thin tube en softdomes Uw audicien zal in eerste instantie de thin tube & softdomes aansluiten tijdens uw eerste aanpassing. Vervang voor optimale prestaties de thin tube elke drie maanden. De softdome moet misschien nog vaker vervangen worden in verband met oorsmeer en vocht. Een aanbevolen periode voor vervanging van de softdome is 30 dagen. Het verwijderen van de thin tube en softdome van het hoortoestel: pak de thin tube aan de zijde van het hoortoestel; draai deze voorzichtig 90 graden en trek de thin tube om deze van het hoortoestel te verwijderen. Noot: Buig de thin tube en softdome niet heen en weer om deze te verwijderen Nederlands

65 De thin tube & soft dome vastmaken aan het hoortoestel: duw zachtjes de thin tube aan de zijde van het hoortoestel op het hoortoestel totdat deze in op zijn plaats klikt. Schoonmaken van thin tube en softdome Tussen vervangingen door, dient u de thin tube en soft dome schoon te maken met de reinigingsdraad. Thin tube: Verwijder de thin tube en softdome van het toestel. Trek de schoonmaakdraad door de thin tube, beginnend aan de zijde van het hoortoestel totdat de draad er uitkomt aan de zijde van de soft dome. Trek de schoonmaakdraad er helemaal doorheen. Zorg dat u de schoonmaakdraad goed afveegt voor de volgende schoonmaaksessie. Maak de softdome schoon met een droge doek. Nederlands 65

66 Onderhoud en gebruik Noot: Zorg ervoor dat de draad slechts in één richting door de thin tube gaat, van de zijde van het hoortoestel naar de zijde van de softdome. Ga niet met de draad heen en weer door de thin tube. Softdome: Softdomes dienen van de thin tube te worden verwijderd, en apart te worden schoongemaakt. Reinig de softdome iedere dag met een droge schone tissue, en ten minste één keer per week met een tandenborstel. Gebruik hiervoor een schone, droge, zachte tandenborstel en borstel over de top van de softdome totdat het oorsmeer verdwenen is. Het rollen van de softdome tussen duim en wijsvinger kan er voor zorgen dat grotere delen oorsmeer makkelijker uit de softdome te verwijderen zijn. Ook warm water kan er voor zorg dragen dat oorsmeer makkelijker te verwijderen is uit de softdome. Zorg er altijd voor dat de softdome volledig droog is voordat deze op de thin tube wordt teruggeplaatst. 66 Nederlands

67 Als de vervuiling aan de softdome niet te verwijderen is, vervang de softdome dan. Opbergen s Nachts: Open het batterijcompartiment-klepje tot de eerste klik om het toestel uit te schakelen. Dit zal de levensduur van de batterij verlengen. Bewaar het apparaat op een veilige locatie buiten de doos, dit zorgt voor de verdamping van vocht in het apparaat. Lang opbergen: Indien u uw toestel voor langere duur niet gebruikt, reinig dan de module en de softdome alvorens deze in het opbergdoosje weg te leggen. Haal in dit geval altijd de batterij uit het toestel. Tijdelijk opbergen: U kunt het opbergdoosje gebruiken als u het toestel tijdelijk uit uw oor wilt halen. Let op: bewaar het hoortoestel niet onbeschermd in uw broekzak, portemonnee of tas om beschadigingen aan uw toestel te voorkomen. Nederlands 67

68 Waarschuwingen De thin tube en de softdome zijn essentiële onderdelen van de Xylo. Gebruik het product daarom nooit zonder thin tube en/of softdome. Als het toestel eenmaal is geprogrammeerd voor een bepaald oor, draag het toestel dan niet in het andere oor. Dit kan leiden tot een verminderde geluidskwaliteit of gehoorverlies. Gebruik nooit beschadigde thin tubes en/of vervuilde softdomes. Dit kan de geluidskwaliteit benadelen of ertoe leiden dat het toestel minder comfortabel in het oor zit. Vervang de softdome van uw toestel regelmatig, zelfs als deze niet zichtbaar beschadigd of vuil is. Zie hoofdstuk Onderhoud en gebruik (pagina 64). Draag de Xylo vier uur achtereen als u het toestel voor het eerst gebruikt en verleng de draagtijd vervolgens met een uur per dag. Gebruik de Xylo niet meer als u pijn, doorlopende irritatie of jeuk ervaart totdat u een specialist heeft geraadpleegd. Raadpleeg uw arts indien de klachten aanhouden. Laat uw oren en gehoor regelmatig controleren, zowel gedurende de beginperiode als daarna. Neem contact op met uw audicien of arts als het u niet lukt de Xylo uit uw oor te halen. Gebruik de Xylo niet in de volgende situaties: Een medische achtergrond met betrekking tot de oren Exostosen (botuitstulpingen) in de gehoorgang Overmatige oorsmeerproductie 68 Nederlands

69 De Xylo mag nooit: Vallen Blootgesteld worden aan vocht of water Ondergedompeld worden in water Gebruikt worden tijdens het zwemmen, douchen, een bad of in de sauna Nat schoongemaakt worden Blootgesteld worden aan extreem hoge temperaturen, zoals bij gebruik van een haarföhn Gedragen worden in mijnen of andere ruimten waar explosiegevaar is Blootgesteld worden aan röntgenstralingen, of sterke magnetische velden, bijvoorbeeld gedurende een medisch onderzoek Gedragen worden in situaties waar haarlak (kapper) of oplosmiddelen (zoals verf) gebruikt worden Producten voor persoonlijke verzorging Er dient extra voorzichtig omgegaan te worden tijdens het gebruik van make-up, crème, body-oil, gel, haarlak en soortgelijke producten wanneer u de Xylo draagt en indoet. Deze kunnen ertoe leiden dat het toestel vuil wordt en ertoe bijdragen dat de microfoonopening verstopt raakt. Kinderen en huisdieren Houd de Xylo uit de buurt van kinderen en huisdieren. In het geval van inslikken van één van de componenten, is er een verstikkingsgevaar voor kleine kinderen. Batterij waarschuwing informatie Doe de batterijen nooit in uw mond. Als u een batterij doorgeslikt heeft, raadpleeg dan zo snel mogelijk een arts. Neem de Nederlands 69
