Collection / use of data follws that task

10 Collecting facts and figures Why? Current position Where are we? Development Where we are coming from and where we are going? Strength, opportunities What are we good at? Challenges, problems - What is not so good? Input for political programs and decision making Figures are an important support for municipalities within the region - Data also available for GI-Systems

11 Data base and surveys Many aspects covered by official statistics agencies (eg ESPON, Eurostat, national, federal state) Problem: - Region no NUTS unit, - not all aspects covered, relevant comparisons missing Own research / resp in cooperation with experts / Universities Economic development Every 2 years on specific topics, in cooperation with trade unions, chamber of commerce, external experts Regional Monitor Every 5 years; Focus on aspects with spatial relevance Traffic / transportation date Base for transportation planning, Specific surveys, Modell / scenario Open space, Size and quality, Landscape Studies on renewable energies, climate change Qualitative aspects often covered, described - What is the story behind the numbers?

12 Planning (for) the future with yesterday data? Many aspects are not predictable some examples Economy export oriented - depending from foreign markets - Example: Vulcano in Iceland Dashboards in Malaysia car oriented price of oil crucial for combustion engines Demography Migration based on uncertain aspects Jobs available, market situation? Demand for land No methodology to predict necessary dimension Key issues are uncertain No crystal ball available! Data is not supposed to deliver answers - But to trigger discussion about possible measures and options No automatism

13 Data as basis for decission-making Little effect from data alone - measures have to be added Important aspects: Which tendency / figures can really be influenced? What else do we need to know to use resources efficient? Keeping uncertainties in mind stay flexible! Broad variety of Indices - what is useful to describe situation? Or: The results depends on the indices chosen! We are always better in our own surveys The purpose of the surveys / data collection defines the design: For decision making: Reliable! For Marketing: It s good to be good For Lobbying like money for streets it s better to be less lucky
