1 JUNE 12 SEPTEMBER 28, 2014 FACE TO FACE The art of the portrait With the permanent exhibition of the Habsburg Portrait Gallery in Ambras Castle Innsbruck, which has been on display since 1976, the castle was predestined to organize a special exhibition dedicated to the subject of portrait art. This temporary exhibition provides the viewer with a wide chronological overview, and presents portraits of various genres from antiquity right up until modern times. The portrait as the (allegedly) objective portrayal of the individual, as an everlasting image of the perishable, as alter ego, as expression of one s own self, as memento and as sign of friendship, as an investment in posthumous fame and as a memorial surpassing death the facets of the portrait are more complex than one thinks on first sight. Using characteristic examples, the exhibition will display representative portraits of rulers and powerful individuals, private citizens, pictures of couples, siblings and families, portrait series and

2 illustrated chronicles, as well as diverse special forms, for example artist s self-portraits and death portraits. Alongside works from the Renaissance, Baroque and Enlightenment, from Lukas Cranach the Elder, Hans Holbein the Younger, Sofonisba Anguissola, Rembrandt Harmensz van Rijn, Joshua Reynolds and others, there are also works from 19th and 20th century artists, such as Hans Makart, Pablo Picasso, Andy Warhol, Alex Katz and Manfred Baumann. The visitor is confronted with the portrait s different forms of appearance and their everyday environments, a situation which in our times is also omnipresent through the use of new media. The exhibition presents ca. 100 works from important European collections. Next to exhibits from Ambras Castle itself, there are topclass objects from the various collections of the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna (Collection of Greek and Roman Antiquities, Picture Gallery, Collection of Arms and Armour, Imperial Carriage Museum Vienna, Kunstkammer Vienna, Coin Collection, Theatre Museum). The consignors also include major international and national museums, institutions and private collections: Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen (Munich), Bayerisches Nationalmuseum (Munich), Staatliche Graphische Sammlung München (Munich), Germanisches Nationalmuseum (Nuremberg), The Marton Museum (Samobor), Collection of Dr. and Mrs. David A. Skier (Philadelphia), Albertina (Vienna), Belvedere (Vienna), Austrian National Library (Vienna), Porcelain Museum in the Augarten (Vienna), Wien Museum (Vienna), Tyrolean State Museum Ferdinandeum (Innsbruck), Universitäts- und Landesbibliothek Tirol (Innsbruck) and others.
