6 MESSAGE (Pastor) **************The close of the Church year************* Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth. **************************************Colossians 3:2 The missionary Pilot, Bernie May once wrote: One of the most difficult lessons to teach new pilots about landing on short, hazardous airstrips is to keep their eye on the good part of the strip, rather than on the hazard. The natural tendency is to concentrate on the obstacle, the danger, the thing he is trying to avoid. But experience has taught us, that a pilot who keeps his eyes on the hazard, will sooner or later hit it dead centre. This makes me think of a spiritual principle in the Bible. Instead of only always concentrating on the sins we want to avoid, we are told to focus on the positive actions Christ desires for us. Paul told the Christians in Colosse: Set your mind on the things above, not only on the earth. We are called to discard the old ways of thinking and acting (v.5-9) and to put on new ways of living (v.10-17). The challenge is to focus on that which has eternal value more and more, and not only onto the things of this earth. Bernie May sums it up by saying that the experienced pilots focus their attention solidly on the track they want the plane to follow, keeping the hazards in the peripheral vision only. When GOD and HIS INTERESTS are the focus of our lives, the lure of the old life remains in the corner of our eye, while we aim to land squarely in the centre of God s will. ~ 6 ~

7 BOTSCHAFT (Pastor) *********************Dankfest********************* Lasset uns nicht nur mit Worten und mit der Zunge lieben, sondern mit der Tat und mit der Wahrheit! ************************************1.Johannes 3:18 Mutter Teresa erzählt, dass eines Tages zwei junge Inder in das Haus der Schwestern in Kalkutta gekommen sind, um einen größeren Geldbetrag zu übergeben. Mit dem Geld sollte den Armen geholfen werden. Mutter Teresa war überrascht, von Hindus so viel Geld zu bekommen. Aber die beiden jungen Leute erklärten: Wir haben vor zwei Tagen geheiratet, hatten aber schon lange beschlossen, uns keine Hochzeitskleidung zu kaufen und keine große Feier zu veranstalten. Dafür wollten wir Ihnen das gesparte Geld für die Armenspeisung übergeben! Das junge indische Ehepaar gehörte einer Familie mit hohem Ansehen und Stand an, und als bekannt wurde, dass sie einer Christlichen Nonne geholfen hatten, gab es in Kalkutta einen Riesenskandal. Später fragte Mutter Teresa die beiden, als sie wieder einmal bei den Schwestern hereinschauten, warum sie das getan hatten. Ihre Antwort war: Wir lieben uns so sehr, dass wir unser gemeinsames Leben damit beginnen wollten, Kraft dieser Liebe anderen Menschen in Not zu helfen! Durch die LIEBESTATEN der Mutter Teresa hatten diese beiden Menschen begonnen zu entdecken, worum es im Christlichen Glauben und im Leben geht. Die Liebe ist das einzige Gute, das mehr wird, wenn man es verschenkt... Daher ermutigt uns Johannes: Lasset uns nicht nur mit Worten und mit der Zunge lieben, sondern mit der Tat und mit der Wahrheit! ~ 7 ~

Child minders look after the younger ones, and the rest can participate in the full program (which also includes lots of leisure time to get ready for 2018) The theme for 2018 is Alive!! God is the Giver of life. How do the Old Testament laws and 10 Commandments link up with life? We believe that God values life. How do we as Christians deal with situations that threaten life? Jesus is the Living Word. What does it mean for us as Christians to follow the Living Word, as opposed to written commandments or doctrines? We will study 1 Corinthians as example of how early Christians tried (and failed!) to live out and follow the Living Word. 10 ALIVE! equip Januar 2018, Hermannsburg, KZN equip - die Tagung für die ganze Familie! Für die Kleinen gibt es Kinderbetreuung, und der Rest der Familie, auch Oma und Opa, können am vollen Programm teilnehmen. (Das Programm ist gar nicht so voll. Es gibt auch viel Zeit zum Ausruhen und Kräfte sammeln für 2018) Das Thema für 2018 ist Alive!! (Leben!!) Gott schenkt das Leben. Aber wie passen das Alte Testament mmit den vielen Geboten zum Leben? Wir glauben, dass das Leben in Gottes Augen wertvoll ist. Wie gehen wir als Christen mit Situationen um, die das Leben gefährden? Jesus ist das lebendige Wort. Was heißt das, wenn wir als Christen einem lebendigen Wort folgen, statt vielen Geboten und Dogmen? Wir werden uns auch mit dem 1. Korintherbrief befassen. Dort kann man lesen, wie die ersten Christen versucht haben, diesem Lebenden Wort Christus zu folgen - und auch daran gescheitert sind! Mehr Information und Anmeldeformular sind zu finden bei ~ 10 ~

12 Bischofs Post Oktober November 2017 Jesus sagt: Ich bin gekommen, ein Feuer anzuzünden auf Erden; was wollte ich lieber, als dass es schon brennte! (Lukas 12,49) Bruder Martin, wie lange hat es gedauert, die 95 Thesen zu schreiben? Was hast du wohl gedacht, als du sie dann an deine Vorgesetzten geschickt hast? Haben Studenten dir geholfen sie für jeden Brief zu kopieren? Als du die Briefe den Boten gabst, hast du auf Reaktion gehofft. Du hast damit gerechnet, dass deine Vorgesetzten diesen Ablasspredigern das Werk verbieten würden. Aber sie haben deinen Brief ignoriert. Womit du nicht gerechnet hattest, war, dass deine Briefe auch in andere Hände kommen würden. Dort wurden sie nicht ignoriert. Schon bald wurden die Thesen weit und breit diskutiert. Damit fing ein Feuer an, dass sich schnell über ganz Europa verbreitete. Viel Blut ist geflossen. Deine geliebte Kirche brach auseinander. Bruder Martin - konntest du ahnen, was diese paar Seiten auslösen würden? Wie gerne würde ich ihn dieses fragen! Was in Martin Luthers Gedanken umging, wissen wir nicht. Wir wissen, dass ihn der Handel mit der Vergebung wütend gemacht hat. Buße und Vergebung hatten keine Folgen - außer auf die Finanzen. Die Büßer wurden ärmer und die Kirche reicher. Als Jesus sagte: Tut Buße, ging es ihm nicht darum, dass nur für vergangene Schuld genug getan wird, sondern dass das ganze Leben eines Christen eine Umkehr, ein Neuanfang sein sollte. (These 1) Nun ist es 500 Jahre her, seitdem Martin Luther diese Thesen schrieb. Vieles ist seitdem geschehen. Aber manches hat sich nicht geändert. ~ 12 ~

13 Heute noch gibt es Prediger, die für Geld Vergebung versprechen. Es gibt viele Christen, die ihre Schuld bekennen, aber nicht bereit sind, ihr Leben zu ändern. Die Zerbröckelung der Kirche ist schlimmer geworden. Hat Jesus dieses gemeint, als er in Lukas 12,51 sagte er sei nicht gekommen Frieden zu bringen, sondern Zwietracht? Ist dieses das Feuer, nach dem er sich sehnte? Ein Feuer, dass wie die Brände bei Knysna alles um sich zerstört? Freut er sich jedesmal, wenn eine Kirche oder Gemeinde sich spaltet? Dieser Teil von Lukas 12 kann wirklich den Eindruck erwecken, dass Spaltungen gottgewollt sind, und dass Christen sich gegenseitig exkommunizieren sollen, wenn sie anderer Meinung sind. Aber der Anfang des Kapitels zeigt worum es eigentlich geht. Die Jünger sollen das Evangelium verkündigen - aber dieses Evangelium wird Spannung verursachen, weil es nicht überall gerne gehört wird. Dennoch wird es sich ausbreiten wie ein Feuer. Auch Widerstand wird es nicht aufhalten. Auf der ganzen Welt werden Menschen die Befreiung durch Christus erleben. In Johannes 17 lesen wir, dass Jesus betet, dass die Christen diese Botschaft gemeinsam, miteinander und eines Sinnes verkündigen werden. Am 27. August haben sechs Lutherische Kirchen gemeinsam in Pretoria einen Reformationsgottesdienst gehalten. Das ist in den letzten 200 Jahren noch nicht vorgekommen. Schade. Aber nun ist es passiert. Wunderbar! Die Welt braucht mehr denn je zuvor die Botschaft, dass Jesus Christus Leben ändert. Sie braucht kein Theologengezanke, sondern das gemeinsame Bekenntnis der Christenheit: Jesus Christus ruft zur Umkehr, vergibt die Schuld und führt uns zu einem neuen Leben, ein Leben, das Segen bringt. Wenn wir 500 Jahre Reformation feiern, geht es nicht darum, dass wir über die Vergangenheit träumen, sondern dass wir den Mut haben, in die Zukunft zu gehen. Das Jubiläum lädt uns ein, uns wieder auf das Eigentliche zu besinnen, den Kirchenstreit aufzuhören, und mit allen Christen zu bekennen: Jesus Christus ist der Erlöser! Dieses Feuer soll entfachen und die Menschheit erneuern! ~ 13 ~

14 Nachrichten aus der Kirche Nach bestandenem Examen Ende Juli wurde Martin Büttner am 14. August 2017 in Neu Deutschland ordiniert. Er begann dort seine Pastor-coll Zeit. Martha Weich ist nun Pastorin-coll in der Ostkap und wohnt in Stutterheim. Wir danken dem Herrn, dass die beiden ihre Ausbildung beenden konnten, und beten um einen gesegneten Dienst. Am 10. September wurde Pastor Wilko Hunger in der Nordrandgemeinde eingeführt. Mit seiner Frau Jutta kamen er am 25. August in Südafrika an - rechtzeitig um beim Gottesdienst am 27. August in Pretoria dabei zu sein! Wir wünschen ihnen ein gutes Einleben und Gottes Segen mit der neuen Gemeinde! Da diese Bischofspost vor der ELKSA (N-T) Synode in Hermannsburg geschrieben wurde, kann noch nicht über die Synode berichtet werden. Das folgt in anderer Weise. Alle Informationen über die Synode, einschließlich des Berichts der Kirchenleitung und anderer Berichte, können bei Bishop s Post October November 2017 Jesus says: I have come to bring fire on the earth, and how I wish it were already kindled! (Luke 12, 49) Brother Martin, how long did it take you to write those 95 theses? When you mailed them to your superiors, what were you thinking? By the way, did you write each copy yourself, or did you have students to help you? As you handed the letters to the messengers, you were hoping for reaction - that the superiors would agree and forbid the practise of selling forgiveness. It seems as if your superiors did not really give your letters much attention. But some of your letters fell into the wrong hands, and soon people far and wide were discussing your statements. ~ 14 ~

15 These 95 theses started a fire that would sweep across Europe at an enormous speed. They led to bloodshed, division, and the breakup of your church into many, many churches. Brother Martin, did you realise what you were doing? I wish I could ask him that! Martin Luther was concerned that repentance had been commercialised, that it was becoming a transaction with no repercussions but financial ones, leaving the penitent poorer and the church richer. But when Jesus said: Repent, he did not mean to just compensate for wrongs of the past, but that the whole life of a Christian is one of repentance, of turning to Christ and living a new life. (Thesis 1) The 95 theses were written 500 years ago. Still there are preachers that sell salvation. Still there are many Christians that confess their sins but do not dream of changing their life style. But since then the Church has split into thousands of denominations, and it continues to break up even more. Did Jesus mean this when he said in Luke 12, 51 that he did not come to bring peace but division? Is this the fire that he was yearning for - a fire of destruction - devastating like the recent Knysna fires? Does he rejoice each time a church splits and families get torn apart for religious reasons? This portion of Luke 12 can indeed create the impression that it is OK, even biblical, to split a church, to excommunicate those who do not follow my doctrines. But the beginning of Luke 12 makes it clear that Jesus is not speaking about a divided Church, but telling his disciples that the spreading of the gospel will cause tension because this gospel of salvation is not liked everywhere. He prays that this gospel will spread like fire, that it will not be held up by resistance, that people all over the world will be set free by it. And in John 17 it becomes clear that Jesus wants this fire to spread through Christians that work in unison. On 27 August 2017 six Lutheran Churches joined in a combined Service in Pretoria, celebrating the Reformation. It is the first time in 200 years that this happened in our country. That is sad. But it did happen. That is good! What the world needs now more than ever is this message that Christ transforms lives. It does not need theologians condemning each other, but Christians together proclaiming this powerful message. We ~ 15 ~

16 proclaim Christ who calls to repentance, who forgives us and then sends us out to live a different life, a life of blessing. When we celebrate 500 years of Reformation we do not look back with nostalgia, but get courage to move forward, to clean up the mess of inner-christian fighting and proclaim that Christ is Saviour. This is the fire that we should kindle! News from the Church After passing their final exams at the end of July 2017, Martin Büttner was ordained on 14 August in New Germany, where he now is serving as Pastor-coll. Martha Weich is serving as Pastor-Coll in the Eastern Cape Inland Parish (Stutterheim). We thank the Lord for guiding them all these years and trust that they will have a blessed ministry. On 10 September 2017 Pastor Wilko Hunger was inducted as pastor of the Northrand congregation in Johannesburg. He and his wife Jutta arrived on 25 August - just in time to attend the All Lutheran Service on the 27 th! We wish them a speedy settling in, and a blessed time in their new congregation! Feedback from the ELCSA (N-T) Synod in Hermannsburg will come at a later stage, since this newsletter was written before the Synod took place. 17 News from Hermannsburg School HERMANNSBURG HAPPENINGS In a completely unscripted moment, just as Paul Tönsing uttered the words it is almost as if we are thrown into a dark... the lights went out - a breaker in Pietermaritzburg had apparently tripped, plunging Hermannsburg into darkness! Paul, one of our Grade 9 scholars, was addressing the Synod delegates about the challenges that face teenagers and the important role that our faith plays in their lives; completely unfazed, Paul continued his speech by torchlight until the lights came back on a few minutes later, leaving an indelible impression on everyone present. We are very proud of our High School scholars, Paul Tönsing, Dieter Volker, Nonjabulo Khoza and Ntokozo Zondi, who addressed the almost 100 delegates and invited guests of Synod, as well as our musicians (who participated in the opening church service and opening ceremony), our Little Oaks from the Kindergarten, and our Primary School scholars, who presented their perspectives of our school to the Synod in separate group presentations. The Hermannsburg congregation hosted the annual Synod this year, where delegates from the congregations in the eastern half of South Africa, as well as invited guests from the Cape and Namibia, met to discuss various issues affecting our church and its mission. Thank you to all members of our school family who provided accommodation and hosted delegates for the four days, and who attended the open sessions of Synod. As the term nears its end, we look forward to A Pig s Tale on Thursday, 21 September (suppers can be booked on and will be served at 18:00 - the theatre piece begins at 19:00 in the Hermannsburg church hall).
