Deco Dôme IV, 2015 Papier mâché, plant 120 x 31 x 18 cm Roman Gysin, der mit seinen Arbeiten die Grenze zwischen Kunst und Dekoration auslotet, wurde von Jessica Pooch zur Kollaboration eingeladen und überprüft seine Wandobjekte in dem Kontext dieser wohnlichen Atmosphäre. In der Loft-artigen Architektur des Kunszeughauses wird ein Wohnraum simuliert, ohne jedoch alltägliche Spuren des Wohnens aufzuweisen. Der Titel Home Staging verweist auf die Methode dieser Installation: Home Stager sind professionelle Agenturen, die leerstehende Immobilien einrichten, mit der Absicht sie aufzuwerten. Indem ein wohnliches Ambiente geschaffen wird, werden potentielle Käufer in ihrer Vorstellung der Bewohnbarkeit unterstützt positive Gefühle sollen geweckt werden. (Auszug aus dem Pressetext)

21 Roman Gysin 20 Installation view, Werk- und Atelierstipendien der Stadt Zürich 2017, Helmhaus Zürich Temporary Space (decorated version) Wood, fabric, bone glue, pigment and glitter, plastic foil, papier mâché, glass 500 x 330 x 50 cm Roman Gysin (*1984), setzt sich in seinen Arbeiten mit Übergängen von Kunst und Dekoration auseinander und den sozialen Konnotationen, welche dekorativen Handlungen innewohnen. Die Arbeit Wild Thing (Authentic Luxury) entfaltet sich auf dem Boden und könnte auf ein vergangenes oder kommendes Ritual hinweisen, ebenso weckt sie Assoziationen an Mappings und Notationen. Die Installation ist Demarkationsfeld und gleichermassen Einladung zur Grenzüberschreitung. Roman Gysins Arbeiten verweisen einerseits auf Fetisch-und Kultobjekte als Ursprünge von künstlerischer Produktion und thematisieren die zeitgenössische Funktion von Dekoration und Kunst im Kontext eines, in Gysins Worten, Klassenkampf des Geschmacks. 31 Roman Gysin 30 Roman Gysin - Picobello Bezeichnend für die Arbeiten Roman Gysins ist ihr narratives Moment, denn sie rufen beim Betrachter eine eigene Fiktion auf, die ihn gewissermaßen zwingt, selbst kreativ zu werden. Der Rezipient gibt ihrer Wirkung seine individuelle Ausdeutung. Die groben aber dennoch bestimmten Pappmaché-Arbeiten wirken einerseits wie Trümmer oder von der Zeit geprägte Fragmente von etwas Größerem, Artifiziellem und sind doch sich selbst überlassen. Andererseits erscheinen sie wie ein fremdartiger Organismus und geben darüber hinaus Verweise darauf, dass sie hergestellt sind. Sie legen also eine Betonung auf ihren schöpferischen Ursprung. Ganz wie Pilze oder Moose, die ein natürliches Eigenleben auf den Fragmenten führen, erstrecken sich die grauen Strukturen über die Formen. So folgt Gysin im Grunde einem romantischen Motiv der sich selbst überlassenen Natur in Überresten menschengeschaffener Formen und steht so ganz in der Tradition der Ruinenästhetik, die in ihrer Gestalt von Gysin weitergeführt wurde und fragmentarisch ihre narrative Wirkung entwickelt. Im Vordergrund stehen offensichtlich das Material und die Beschaffenheit der Objekte. Durch die Bearbeitung entstehen Werke mit einer bemerkenswerten Oberflächenstruktur, die ihnen die Möglichkeit verschafft ihr bildnerisches Potential zu entfalten. So handelt es sich nicht mehr um das Material an sich, sondern um die Formung, die ihre eigene Ausdeutung fordert. Die so entstandene Erzählung wird dabei nicht konkret, sondern wirkt eigenständig durch das Material. Offenkundig strebt Gysin unter keinen Umständen nach einem herkömmlichen Perfektionsbegriff. Die schmutzig und zurückgelassen erscheinenden Objekte werfen die Frage nach dem Stellenwert der Natur in der Gesellschaft auf. Handelt es sich um Abfall oder Überreste, die längst der Natur überlassen sind. Ohne eine Wertung sucht Roman Gysin nach der Schönheit in diesem Wirken zwischen Artifiziellem und Ungebändigtem. Bei A+ präsentiert er eine Werkgruppe, die in diesem nicht zu unterschätzenden Spannungsfeld anzusiedeln ist, und erklärt den Betrachter zum Erzähler seiner Geschichte. Characteristic of the works of Roman Gysin are his narrative moments, for they call upon the viewer to create a fiction of his own, compelling him to become creative. The effect is that the recipient is given an individual interpretation. The coarse but nevertheless certain papermade works on the other hand, act as fragments alone, or fragments of a larger, more artificial kind left to themselves. At the same time, they appear like an alien organism and also provide references to the fact that they are man-made. The emphasis is on creative origin. Just like mushrooms or mosses, which Iead a natural life on the fragments, the gray structures extend over the forms. Thus, Gysin follows a romantic motif of nature left to itself in remnants of man-made forms, and so entirely in the tradition of,ruin aesthetics, which has been furthered in their forms by Gysin and develop narrative effect in a fragmentary way. The focus is obviously on the material and the nature of the objects. The work creates a remarkable surface structure that gives them the opportunity to develop their pictorial potential. This is no Ionger the material itself, but form which demands its own interpretation. The narrative thus produced is not concrete, but acts independently through the material. Obviously, Gysin never strives for a conventional concept of perfection. The objects that aredirty and left behind raise the question of the importance of nature in society. ls it a waste or remnant that has long been left to natures own devices? Without a valuation, Roman Gysin Iooks for beauty in this work between the artificial and unruly. At A+, he presents a group of works, which must be located in this nonunderestimated stress field, and allows the viewer to become narrator of his/her own story.
