Introduction Few scientists make such a mark on their science that they can be said to change their field, and fewer still are involved in setting up the framework for an entire branch of natural history. One such person is Josef Hafellner, to whom we dedicate the present contribution. Conscious that he is notwithstanding his recent retirement still very much fully active as a researcher, we wish here to highlight his impact on our science to date. Josef Hafellner has dedicated his scientific career to the classification and taxonomy of fungi, in particular lichen-forming ascomycetes and the fungi inhabiting lichen symbioses (known as lichenicolous fungi). Consistent with this central theme, he has also contributed a large body of work to lichen floristics, mainly within the eastern parts of the European Alps. Here we provide a short overview of Hafellner s contribution to the systematics and taxonomy of lichens, of his scientific output resulting from numerous field trips, and of the results coming from one of his favorite hobby horses, the study of lichenicolous fungi. Studies on systematics and taxonomy of lichens Josef Hafellner began studying under Josef Poelt soon after the latter was appointed chair of the department of Systematic Botany in Graz in Under the influence of Poelt, Josef * Corresponding author

2 214 Herzogia 29 (2) Teil 1, 2016 Hafellner soon became enthusiastic for mycology, despite his early interests in plant systematics. With his first publication, about the ascus structures in the genus Thelocarpon (Poelt & Hafellner 1975), he already visited two of the topics that would later become mainstays of his research: the ascus structural characters as central to ascomycete classification, and the classification of lichenicolous fungi. He continued this research in his doctoral thesis about the genus Karschia, which at the time was circumscribed as a heterogenous assemblage of fungi with different life styles, including both lichenized and lichenicolous species (Hafellner 1979). He went on to demonstrate his broad competence of lichen systematics with a monograph of the primarily tropical lichen genus Letrouitia (Hafellner 1981), which doubled as his habilitation thesis and gave him the possibility to pursue a scientific career in the German-speaking academic culture of those times. Perhaps the central work of Josef Hafellner s scientific career and a milestone in lichenology was his contribution to the Festschrift for Josef Poelt (Hafellner 1984b). It represented a comprehensive taxonomic study of the families Lecanoraceae and Lecideaceae, which at the time were interpreted as two large and heterogenous families of lichenized ascomycetes, in part still echoing the antiquated concept of Zahlbruckner. Although their phenotypic heterogeneity was widely recognized by contemporaries, the two families remained taxonomically untouched. As Josef Hafellner was convinced that the characters of the reproductive structures were the most significant for classification, he undertook to provide a new classification of phenotypic groups that reflected natural relationships. His new concept recognized no less than 48 families instead of the former two and led to a radically new classification that was based on fertile structures, particularly based on fine differences in ascus structures that are stainable with Lugol s solution. When Hafellner established this taxonomic framework the knowledge about phenotypic diversity of lichens was far less developed than it is today, and the new concept therefore provided a solid basis for classification of lichens. At that time, however, his concept was both revolutionary and controversial. Two of the authors (MG and HM) remember the intense discussions about the many new or reinstated families at the International Botanical Congress in Berlin However, as time passed, an increasing number of the families proposed by Josef Hafellner were accepted by peer lichen systematists. When PCR and DNA sequencing was introduced to phylogenetic analysis of lichens only a few years later, this also served as a starting point for testing these taxonomic ideas and the significance of ascus characters. Today, this paper counts among the most cited papers in lichenological systematics, with over 320 citations as of summer 2016, according to Google Scholar. During career as a taxonomist, Josef Hafellner introduced more than six hundred scientific names, and his scientific output comprises 289 publications (see publication list at the end of this account). His contributions to lichenology have meanwhile been honored by using his name directly, or as an anagram, in naming of four genera and seventeen species, as listed below: a) Seventeen names of species in honour of Josef Hafellner (bold = described in the present Festschrift): Arthonia pepei Etayo & Pérez-Ortega; Biatora hafellneri Rodr.Flakus & Printzen; Biatoropsis hafellneri Millanes, Diederich, M.Westb. & Wedin; Caloplaca hafellneri S.Y. In addition, Hafellner s surname frequently crops up as a secondary derivation from existing scientific names (Lichenostigma fellhanerae, Malcolmiella fellhaneroides, Malmidea fellhaneroides, Phaeosporobolus fellhanerae and seven taxa of Fellhaneropsis). Even a chemical compound (hafellic acid) is derived from Hafellner due to its occurence in the genus Hafellia. As the 289 publications imply, Hafellner has been a prolific author, and while many of these papers were built on his own effort alone, not a few were also carried out in the context of his many collaborations. Hafellner was never especially fond of attending conferences, but he spent long hours interacting with the many scientific visitors to the Institute of Plant Sciences in Graz and has worked together in the field with many of the leading figures in 20 th and 21 st century lichenology. The many authors that contributed to the present Festschrift are a testament to years of friendships and/or scientific joint endeavors with Josef Hafellner. Materials for studies on lichen biodiversity Studies of lichen biodiversity, also documented by his extensive collections, are a further mainstay of Josef Hafellner s lichenological activity. It is almost impossible to list all of the expeditions, which resulted in many lichen floristic accounts and have kept the present lichen curator in Graz (WO) quite busy. To date, Josef Hafellner has collected and determined more than 100,000 specimens from all over the world, most of which are housed in the herbarium GZU. Hafellner s first specimen, dated 29 June 1974, labeled as number 1' (Fig. 4), was determined by him as Acarospora chlorophana [for more information on specimen number one see caption in Fig. 4]. Later he accepted this species in Pleopsidium, a genus which he re-established in recognition of the differences in chemistry and ascus type from Acarospora (Hafellner 1993a). Specimen number one, as it turns out, was to be the beginning of a long and storied collecting career spanning five continents. a) Excursions to extra-european countries and areas outside the European Alps Josef Hafellner conducted numerous lichenological forays in the Macaronesian islands (for published results see Hafellner 1995b, 1999a, 2002d, 2005a, 2008b), but other important lichenological travels (outside the European Alps) should be mentioned as well, which are here briefly listed (in chronological order): 1977 (U.S.A.: Florida; Tennessee; Michigan; Washington), 1978 (Costa Rica), 1979 (Italy: Calabria; Norway: Svalbard archipelago), 1980 (France: Mediterranean, Auvergne; Normandy; Spain: various parts), 1982 (Tunisia), 1983 (Spain: Ebro valley and Pyrenees), 1984 (Norway), 1986 (Australia; Slovakian part of the former Czechoslovakia), 1988 (Italy: Sicily), 1989[ ]1999 (Spain: Canary Islands), 1990 (Portugal: Madeira), 1992 (South Africa; Sweden: southern part), 1993 (France: Corsica; Mexico: Sonoran Desert; U.S.A.: Arizona), 1994 (Mexico: Sonoran Desert; U.S.A.: Arizona),

5 Grube, Obermayer, Mayrhofer & Spribille: Josef Hafellner a life amongst lichens and their parasites (Sweden: southern part; Venezuela), 1997 (Venezuela), 1998 (Venezuela), 2000 (Panama), 2003 (Costa Rica), 2007 (Albania), 2010 (U.S.A.: Alaska). b) Excursions within the European Alps (with focus on the Styrian part of the Eastern Alps) In the past two decades the collecting activity of Josef Hafellner focused primarily on Austria and, in particular, Styria, which may be one of the lichenologically best-known regions in the world. The collecting work of many hundreds of weekend excursions resulted in numerous papers dealing with larger (mainly Styrian) mountain ranges, such as the Hochschwab (Hafellner et al. 2005), Gurktaler Alpen (Hafellner et al. 2005a), Stubalpe (Hafellner & Obermayer 2007), Ennstal Alps (Hafellner et al. 2008) and Koralpe (Hafellner 2008c). Further substantial lichens collection of Hafellner were used by him as a source for biodiversity studies from either local areas of particular relevance for conservation (e.g. the Natura 2000 site Raabklamm [Hafellner 2009c]) or particular ecological niches (e.g. lichens on serpentinite [Hafellner 1991c] or marble [Wilfling & Hafellner 2010a, b]). In addition to the aforementioned Styrian weekend excursions, Hafellner undertook two (collection-rich) field trips to the Western Alps in 2000 (Piemont) and 2001 (Piemont and Aosta Valley) together with the Italian lichenologists Pier Luigi Nimis and Mauro Tretiach. Finally, as a long-time member of the BLAM (Bryologisch-lichenologische Arbeitsgemeinschaft für Mitteleuropa) Josef Hafellner participated in and conducted a number of excursions that have yielded many thousands of his specimens (see e.g. Hofmann et al and Hafellner et al. 2003). c) Lichen collections as a source for the distribution of extensive exsiccate material A major contribution to lichenology stemming from his extraordinary collecting activity are his exsiccate material, including many which address issues of taxonomic relevance. Altogether 8,390 lichen specimens collected by Hafellner were issued in 718 exsiccate contributions in the following exsiccate series: Plantae Graecenses (Poelt 1975[ ]1993; with 3670 specimens in 197 contributions), Lichenotheca Graecensis (Obermayer 1994[ ]2014; 1800 specimens in 90 contributions), Dupla Graecensia Lichenum (Obermayer 1998[ ]2015; ca. 940 specimens in 195 contributions), Fungi Lichenicoli Exsiccati (Santesson 1988[ ]2008; starting with fascicle 5; 810 specimens in 81 contributions), and Lichenicolous Biota (Hafellner 2007[ ]2015; 940 specimens in 150 contributions). Lichenicolous fungi Josef Hafellner always had a special interest in the smallest things in nature, such as tiny morphological structures at the optical resolution limit (e.g. ascus structures) or orders of magnitude larger in the so-called microlichens. If he would ever spend more attention to macrolichens, it would then primarily be for the lichenicolous fungi growing on the larger thalli. He demonstrated the interest in lichenicolous fungi already in his first publications, and since then became a leading world expert in this group of organisms. The Institute of Plant Sciences in Graz has a lasting record of this interest, and now has one of the largest collections of lichenicolous fungi, with approximately 12,000 determined specimens (and many thousands of still unnamed samples). The interpretation of lichenicolous fungi and their relations to their hosts can be tricky at times [misinterpretations were summed up by Hafellner & Obermayer 1995: ] and one of the few examples Josef revised his opinion on was Neonorrlinia trypetheliza (Nyl.) Sydow. This species was long recognized as a lichenized

9 Grube, Obermayer, Mayrhofer & Spribille: Josef Hafellner a life amongst lichens and their parasites 221 species (Poelt & Hafellner 1979), while its similarity to related, and meanwhile better known lichenicolous fungi showed 16 years later that this species is actually a commensalistic associate (now named as Cercidospora trypetheliza (Nyl.) Hafellner & Obermayer) on the host thallus of several taxa of the lichen genus Arthrorhaphis (see Hafellner & Obermayer 1995). Josef Hafellner produced a series of publications about lichenicolous fungi ( Studien über lichenicole Pilze und Flechten, also under Studien an lichenicolen Pilzen und Flechten ; see Hafellner 1982c,d, 1985b,c, 1987a,b, 1989a, 1996c, 1998a,c, 1989c, 2002b) and his exsiccate series Lichenicolous Biota (see References for cited exsiccate series below), which, according to the introduction, comprises all lifeforms on lichens (including even animals):...the exsiccata covers all lichenicolous biota, i.e., it is open not only to non-lichenized and lichenized fungi, but also to myxomycetes, bacteria, and even animals, whenever they cause a characteristic symptom on their host (e.g. discoloration or galls) (see Hafellner 2015a: 21). Currently Josef Hafellner is working on a compilation of all lichenicolous fungi from Austria with the aim of a prodromus of lichenicolous fungi. Besides this he is involved in an almost completed checklist of lichens of the Alps and in the (also almost finished) second checklist of lichens in Austria [the latter to be published in conjunction with an upcoming lichen exhibition at the Biologiezentrum Linz (Austria) in 2016]. Final remarks The lichenological contributions of Josef Hafellner are a showcase of complementarity between a deep understanding of phenotypic variation ( Formenkenntnis ) and a comprehensive grasp of literature old and new. Josef possesses not only the rare ability to detect the subtlest of anatomical differences on any number of magnification scales, he has for years also synthesized the phylogenetic hypotheses that tie the species universe together into a larger story. This he has done without even the benefit of molecular insight, unlike most of today s scientists. What has taken this mastery of natural history to an even higher level is his ability to weave these observations together with the historical literature, bringing order to the nomenclature of literally hundreds of taxa at all hierarchical levels. Throughout all of this, he does not lose sight of each species ecological context, its interactions with other species, and its own symbiotic lifestyle, whether it be mutualistic, commensalistic, parasymbiotic, parasitic or pathogenic. Josef s deep intuition for morphoanatomical differences led him to correctly predict many of the phylogenetic relationships we take for granted today. Not least, it has also served him well as a bullshit detector anyone who knows Josef is familiar with his uncanny ability to pick off the misplaced DNA sequence, the improbable result, which upon closer examination turns out after all to be derived from a contamination. Finally we want to mention the qualities of Josef Hafellner as an academic teacher, since two of the authors were among his former students (MG and WO) and the third author (HM) was a teaching colleague for several decades. Josef Hafellner has advised more than 30 master and diploma students, and nine doctoral theses. With him as a teacher, two of us (MG and WO) completed one of our first undergraduate botany courses. In the early 1980s Hafellner was well known by students as a rather strict university teacher who would not tolerate sloppiness and who insisted on precise drawings, clear thinking, and well-prepared hand sections (using razor blades). During numerous field and laboratory courses (see e.g. Fig. 2A), Hafellner succeeded in conveying the big messages of the smallest things in nature: a legacy that will leave a lasting mark on our ability to value the treasures of fungal biodiversity in particular and of all living things in general.
