Write a brief paragraph in English (about 4 or 5 sentences) about the differences between Germany and Ireland in credit card acceptance and use. Include an explanation of the German attitude towards the concept of Schuld in your paragraph. Question 2. What is Germlish or Denglisch? Why is considered by some to be a problem in Germany? Give a few examples! Question 3. Write a brief paragraph in English (about 8 sentences) about the Germans belief in the concept of Ordnung at work and in the home. Include in your paragraph a discussion of the following (abbreviated) statement: [...] in the workplace, [an] obsession with order and compartmentalisation can [...] promote inefficiency [...]. 3 Question 5. [20 marks] Read the text below about the company Otto, and answer the questions in English. Otto ist ein Versandhaus, das Waren per Katalog und Online-Bestellung verkauft und den Kunden direkt ins Haus schickt. Insgesamt gibt es mehr als 600 Kataloge pro Saison. Der deutsche Hauptkatalog hat das Motto Ist es Trend, hat es Otto. Er bietet auf Seiten über Produkte an, vor allem Bekleidung und Schuhe. Es gibt noch dazu 30 Spezialkataloge, zum Beispiel Multimedia, Baumarkt und Gartencenter. Otto existiert seit Im Herbst 1950 brachte der Firmengründer Werner Otto den ersten Katalog heraus. Dieser erschien in einer Auflage von 300 Exemplaren, alle handgebunden, mit einem Angebot von 28 Paar Schuhen. Er hatte nur 14 Seiten. Nach 50 Jahren ist die Otto- Handelsgruppe mit 51 Unternehmen in 23 Ländern in Europa, Amerika und Asien der einzige Global Player der Branche und das umsatzstärkste Versandunternehmen der Welt. 4 Question 7. [15 marks] Below is a dialogue between Schmidt, a visitor to the company Nordico, and Ms. Brett, the personal assistant to the director of the company. They are waiting for the director (Mr. Bohrmann) to arrive. Please fill in Schmidt s side of the conversation. Please make sure you read through the whole dialogue at least once before starting this exercise! Frau Brett: Schmidt, kann ich Ihnen etwas zu trinken anbieten? Frau Brett: Ja, wir haben Mineralwasser. Möchten Sie auch einen Kaffee? Frau Brett: So, ein Glas Mineralwasser und eine Tasse Kaffee mit Zucker. Wie war die Reise? Frau Brett: Eine Stunde Verspätung! 5 Question 8. The Imperfect Put the present-tense paragraph below into the Imperfect tense. The first sentence will be: Alex wohnte in Ostberlin Goodbye Lenin! Alex wohnt in Ostberlin. Im September 1989 demonstrieren die Ostdeutschen auf den Straβen. Alex ist auch dabei. Seine Mutter sieht ihn und bekommt einen Herzinfarkt 1. Sie liegt 8 Monate lang im Koma. Wenn sie wieder aufwacht, existiert die Berliner Mauer nicht mehr. Die Mutter weiβ das aber nicht. Alex und seine Schwester beschliessen, ihrer Mutter nichts vom Fall der Mauer zu sagen. Question 9.
