SMART CITIES IN AUSTRIAN R&D POLICY: SMART CITIES DEMO AS STARTING POINT 2010 start of the Smart Cities initiative ( Smart Cities Demo ) of the Austrian Climate and Energy Fund Vision: first implementation of a smart city or smart urban region, i.e. a district or urban quarter, a residential area or an urban region which, with the use of intelligent, green technologies, will become a zero emission city or zero emission urban region Integrated and system-optimizing approach: cross-system issues in the fields of buildings, energy grids, supply and disposal, mobility, communication and information Demonstration or preparative initial projects 2

EXAMPLE I: SMART CITIES DEMO ASPERN / VIENNA David Bohmann New development of 240 ha: integration of renewable energy sources into energy networks 200 flats, primary school, kindergarten and students home as testbed: new concepts of user involvement and energy management 4

EXAMPLE II: SMART CITY PROJECT GRAZMITTE David Bohmann New mixed-use urban quarter near the main railway station integrated planning process and demonstration of new technology components like façade-integrated photovoltaic components etc. 5

ACCOMPANYING R&D: CITY OF TOMORROW AND PREDECESSORS 1999-2013: Programme Building of Tomorrow (Plus) ( Haus der Zukunft [Plus] ): > 400 projects, first flagship projects Since 2003 funding of R&D projects in the field of Smart Grids Since 2013: New Austrian R&D programme City of Tomorrow: Intelligent energy solutions for buildings and cities ( Stadt der Zukunft ): - System design and urban services - Built infrastructure - Technologies for urban energy systems 24 projects funded within the 1st call 7

SMART CITIES IN CALLS OF THE EUROPEAN COMMISSION First call on Smart Cities and Communities in 2012 within FP7 Within Horizon 2020: Call SCC-01-2015: Smart Cities and Communities solutions integrating energy, transport, ICT sectors through lighthouse (large scale demonstration first of the kind) projects Call budget: 108 M 8

THE JOINT PROGRAMMING INITIATIVE (JPI) URBAN EUROPE 2 calls 2012 and 2013 10 participating countries: AT, BE, CY, DK, I, NE, NO, SE, TK, UK (+ FI in the 1st call) 20 projects, funding of 18.2 M Topics: - Urban diversity and social cohesion - Urban systems and networks - Governance of urban complexity - Urban vulnerability, adaptability, and resilience Planned next call within an ERA-NET Cofund Smart Cities and Communities (ENSCC) 9
