Remote sensing application in environmental planning Remote sensing is the acquisition of information on the condition of land from space (such as by way of aircraft, spacecraft, or earth observing satellite). Examples are weather satellites like the weather satellites operated by of the American National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) or the early land observation satellite family of LANDSAT. The earth observation system are varying in 1) the carrier of the scanner and the distance to the earth 2) the frequency of data capture 3) the type of spectral data collected and the resolution of the data, 4) and the size of coverages captured
Standard Digital Orthographic Photos (DOP) provided in Germany by the State Agencies for GeoData Captured every 2 years Scanner from airplane approx. 2 km above ground 20 cm resolution (see sample neighborhood in southern part of the city of Munich, May 2009) Further Samples: http://www.dop-d.de/muster.html

Die Auflösung von DOP 20 ( 20 cm ) erlaubt die Anwendung bis zum Kartenmaßstab von 500

LIDAR is an optical remote sensing technology of future interest for landscape architecture applications. The acronym Lidar stands for light detection and ranging. LIDAR it is an airborne optical remote-sensing technology similar to radar technology. While Radar scanner are using radio waves, LIDAR scanner are using much shorter wavelengths of the electromagnetic spectrum, typically in the ultraviolet, visible, or near-infrared range. The LIDAR technology allows the measurement of three-dimensional structures and the underlying terrain. This will make data driven from LIDAR very useful in landscape architecture applications
