1 General This multi-function joystick provides user operated electrical output changes that are initiated either by rotating the outer bezel or operating the integrated rocker. The outer bezel remains in the selected position. After deflection the Joystick automatically returns into the centre position. The external components are manufactured from aluminium and plastic. For detailed dimensions please refer to the product drawing. 2 Temperature Range Operating temperature range Ta -40 C +85 C Storage temperature Ts -50 C +90 C 3 Power Supply The Joystick and Encoder functions require a stabilised 5 V dc supply. The power consumption amounts to about 20 ma. The button illumination requires a stabilised 14v dc supply. 4 Electrical interface Electrical connection to the joystick is by means of a flat ribbon cable, mounted on a 10-pin AMP connector (Micro- Match-Miniature). The pin allocation of this interface is shown below. Page 2 of 7
5 Illumination Integrated LEDs provide the button lighting. Wavelength 630 nm (standard, other colour possible) Operating voltage 12V 14V Operating current 20 ma Light density (red) min. 15 cd/m 2 6 PUSH function The button is implemented as a normally open contact and switches to Ground when button is pressed (pin 1). With an external resistance in Pull-up configuration, the pressed position is defined at 0V (Low) and the idle position is defined at 5V (High). 7 TURN function The Encoder is based on a Quadrature-2-Bit-Code with two 90 phase shifted pulses for forward/backward recognition. Voltage levels Low: 0 1V High: 4 5V 20 index positions per rotation grid position 8 Joystick function The Joystick function is derived from two Hall Effect elements spaced at 120 degree and providing an analogue output voltage. By operating the sliding plate, four discrete directions are electrically distinguishable. For the idle position and each operation direction, specific voltage ranges for terminals X and terminal Y are defined. 8.1 Voltage ranges idle position Definition of the voltage levels in idle position: Terminal X: 2.20 V - 2.80 V Terminal Y: 2.20 V - 2.80 V 8.2 Voltage ranges 4-way motion Direction Terminal X Terminal Y N 3,20 4,50 V 2,00 3,19 V E 2,00 3,19 V 3,20 4,50 V S 1,50 1,99 V 2,00 3,19 V W 2,00 3,19 V 1,50 1,99 V For each of the four discrete Joystick directions, a constant voltage with each position of the Encoder a minimum operating window of 20 is maintained. The voltage ranges are valid only in the unselected (un-pressed) condition. Turning and pushing the Joystick simultaneously can lead to malfunction. Precise details of the relationship between operation and output are defined below: Page 4 of 7
