2 ecotopic Editorial Dr. Reinhard Jäger Werkleiter und Verantwortlicher des Umweltmanagementsystems Mill Manager and Head of the Environmental Management System Geschätzte Leserinnen und Leser Dear Reader Wie jedes Jahr legt Ziegler Papier mit dem Umweltbericht Z-ECO Rechenschaft ab über die umweltrelevanten Bereiche und Leistungen des vergangenen Jahres. Dieser Umweltbericht beschränkt sich ausschliesslich auf den Papierherstellungsprozess im Werk Grellingen und ist in diesem Sinne nur ein Teilaspekt eines Life Cycle Assessments (LCA) für die von Ziegler Papier hergestellten Papierprodukte. Auf die Umweltaspekte der von Ziegler Papier eingekauften Rohstoffe wird in diesem Bericht also nicht eingegangen. Eine LCA-Betrachtung dagegen wird in unseren Paper Profils nach standardisierten Verfahren abgebildet. Ein Vergleich ist insofern interessant, als die Umweltbelastung des Teilprozesses Papierherstellung gegenüber der ganzen Wertschöpfungskette (cradle to gate) stark relativiert wird. Das Jahr 2012 war ein weiteres, sehr anspruchsvolles Jahr für die Papierindustrie, insbesondere im grafischen Sektor in der Schweiz. Davon war auch Ziegler Papier betroffen. Zwar war auf der Wechselkursseite durch die Fixierung der Untergrenze zum Euro durch die Schweizerische Nationalbank eine Stabilisierung eingetreten, allerdings auf einem Niveau, welches zu massgeblichen Marktverzerrungen geführt hat. So war unsere Auslastung auch im Berichtsjahr 2012 nicht zu 100% gegeben, obwohl die Absatzmenge und Produktionsmenge im Berichtsjahr gesteigert werden konnte. Es ist daher nicht überraschend, dass im Grossen und Ganzen gegenüber dem Vorjahr nicht allzu grosse Unterschiede in der Umweltleistung resultierten. Details entnehmen Sie bitte den nachfolgenden Ausführungen. 2 As it does every year, Ziegler Paper Mill is publishing this Z- ECO environmental report to provide information on its environmentally relevant activities and achievements during the previous year. Our report is limited exclusively to the paper manufacturing process at our mill in Grellingen and therefore represents only a part of any life cycle assessment (LCA) with respect to the paper products manufactured by Ziegler Paper Mill. The report makes no attempt to present any environmental aspects of the raw materials purchased by Ziegler Paper Mill. However, LCA details are given in our Paper Profiles in accordance with standardised procedures. Comparison is interesting since this puts into striking perspective the environmental impact of the actual paper-making process as opposed to that of the supply chain as a whole (cradle to gate) proved to be another very challenging year for the paper industry and particularly so in Switzerland s graphic sector. Ziegler Paper Mill was not left untouched by this situation. Although the Swiss National Bank s fixing a minimum exchange rate for the franc against the euro led to a degree of stabilisation on the currency front, this was at a level that resulted in substantial distortions on the market. Once again, utilisation of our manufacturing capacity in 2012 was under 100%, even though we succeeded in increasing the volume of both sales and production during the year. It is therefore not surprising that by and large there were no very great differences in our environmental performance in comparison with the previous year. You will find detailed information in the following pages.

Ziegler Paper Mill at a glance Die Ziegler Papier AG produziert als familiengeführte Herstellerin hochwertige, holzfreie Feinpapiere für die grafische Industrie und anwendergerechte Spezialpapiere für die industrielle Weiterverarbeitung. Firmensitz und Produktionsstätte befinden sich in Grellingen, Schweiz, nahe bei Basel. Im Berichtsjahr gingen umsatzmässig rund 59% (Vorjahr: 54%) unserer Produkte in den Export, hauptsächlich ins europäische Ausland. Ziegler Paper Mill is an independent manufacturer of premium-quality wood-free fine papers for the printing industry and customised specialty papers for industrial processing. Its headquarters and production facilities are located in Grellingen near Basel, Switzerland. During the year covered by this report, approximately 59% of our products were sold abroad (previous year: 54%), with the majority of these going to European countries. Use of resources Der spezifische Verbrauch von Frischwasser, Rohstoffen und Energie ist ein Mass für die Effizienz unserer Ressourcennutzung. Für das Berichtsjahr müssen wir einen Anstieg von 1,5% beim spezifischen Rohstoffeinsatz konstatieren. Dies korrespondiert mit einer entsprechenden Zunahme beim Anfall an Papierschlamm sowie beim Feststoff im Abwasser. Mit dieser Abweichung sind wir unzufrieden, bedeuten doch Verluste an Rohstoffen sowohl ökologisch wie ökonomisch eine Verschwendung. Wir streben daher beim spezifischen Rohstoffeinsatz einen maximalen Zielwert von 1,03 an. Es gilt nun herauszufinden, wo im Prozess die erhöhten Materialverluste auftreten. Losses are concentrated on wastewater, where solids flocculated in the pre-treatment plant are filtered out as paper sludge and soluble contents, primarily starch, are broken down in the municipal biological treatment plant. During the year covered by this report, we registered an increase of 1.5% in specific raw material usage. This corresponds to a concomitant rise in the occurrence of paper sludge and of solids in the wastewater. We are dissatisfied with this increase, since losses of raw materials represent both ecological and economic waste. We are therefore aiming at a maximum value of 1.03 with respect to specific raw material usage. It is now important to discover where in the production process this increase in the loss of materials occurs. 4

5 Umweltleistungen I Environmental performance ecoeffort 2.3 Energie Die Energieversorgung bei Ziegler Papier basiert auf einer Anlage für Wärmekraftkopplung mittels einer Gasturbine. Strom wird thermisch aus der Kraftkopplung der Gasturbine erzeugt. Mehrbedarf an Strom wird aus dem öffentlichen Netz zugekauft. Die Abwärme der Gasturbine wird, zusammen mit einer Erdgas-Zusatzfeuerung, zur Dampferzeugung für die Papiermaschine verwendet. Da der ausgewiesene Gasbedarf sowohl den Wärmebedarf der Papiermaschine als auch den Kraftbedarf für die thermische Stromerzeugung abdeckt, setzt sich der gesamte Energiebedarf aus der Summe von zugekauftem Gas und zugekauftem Strom zusammen. 2.3 Energy Energy supply at Ziegler Paper Mill is based on a combined heat and power plant with a gas turbine. Electricity is generated thermally using co-generation with our gas turbine and any extra power required is bought from the public grid. The waste heat from the gas turbine is used together with additional heat from a natural-gas furnace in order to produce steam for the paper machine. As gas consumption covers both the heating needs of the paper machine as well as power requirements for the thermal generation of electricity, the total energy needed is made up of the sum of purchased gas and purchased electricity. Sowohl der spezifische Stromverbrauch als auch der spezifische Dampfverbrauch haben sich leicht vermindert. Dagegen ist der Gasverbrauch als Primärenergie überproportional angestiegen. Dies bedeutet, dass der Wirkungsgrad der Energiezentrale bei der Umwandlung von Gas in Prozessdampf und Strom im Berichtsjahr abgenommen hat, während der Wirkungsgrad der Papiertrocknung in der Papiermaschine und der elektrischen Antriebe sich eher verbessert hat. Insgesamt gibt es bei der Energie noch Optimierungspotential durch Verbesserung der Prozessführung, um die Energieverluste in die Umwelt zu minimieren. Entsprechende Überlegungen, auch unter Berücksichtigung des ab geltenden neuen CO 2 -Gesetzes, sind in die langfristige Investitionsplanung eingeflossen. What is striking about our energy consumption in 2012 is a certain shift among the various forms of energy, i.e. natural gas, electricity and steam. Both specific power consumption and specific steam consumption decreased slightly. On the other hand, consumption of gas as the primary energy source demonstrated a disproportionate increase. This means that the level of efficiency of our central power plant for converting gas into process steam and electricity decreased during the year under review, while the efficiency of paper drying in the paper machine and electric drive motors tended to improve. Overall, there is still room for improvement as far as energy consumption is concerned by improving process controls in order to minimise the loss of energy into the environment. This situation has been given appropriate consideration in our long-term investment planning, taking into account the new CO 2 legislation that came into effect on

Waste emissions 3.1 Abwasser Das der eigenen Grundwasserfassung entnommene Frischwasser wird durch firmeninterne Kreislaufschliessungen mehrfach genutzt. Bei der Papierherstellung wird nicht eigentlich Wasser «verbraucht». Vielmehr wird das dem Papierherstellungsprozess als Prozesswasser zugeführte Frischwasser in Form von gereinigtem Abwasser, Wasserdampf aus der Trockenpartie sowie Feuchtigkeit der Papierprodukte wieder an die Umwelt abgegeben. Korrespondierend mit der Reduktion des Frischwasserbedarfes ist daher auch der spezifische Abwasseranfall um mehr als 3% zurückgegangen und liegt damit deutlich unter unserer Zielmarke von 4 l/kg. Unerfreulich ist der Anstieg des Feststoffgehaltes im Abwasser um 4,5%. Da gleichzeitig auch die Menge des abfiltrierten Papierschlamms angestiegen ist (s. 3.3 Abfälle), muss der Anstieg des Feststoffgehaltes nicht zwingend mit einer verschlechterten Filtereffizienz der Abwasserfilter gleichgesetzt werden. Gleichwohl haben wir in unserer Technologie ein Projekt gestartet, welches zum Ziel hat, die Effizienz unserer Abwasservorklärung zu verbessern. Seit dem ist die Ziegler Papier AG als Einleiterin dem Abwasseregelement der Gemeinde Grellingen unterstellt. Seit diesem Zeitpunkt ist der TOC-Gehalt (TOC = totaler organischer Kohlenstoff) die kostenpflichtige Komponente der Abwasserbelastung für die nachfolgende biologische Kläranlage. Aus diesem Grunde ist in untenstehender Tabelle neu ab 2010 auch der TOC-Gehalt aufgeführt. Im Gegensatz zum Feststoffgehalt, welcher organischer oder anorganischer Zusammensetzung sein kann, umfasst der TOC alle organischen Verbindungen (fest oder gelöst). 3.1 Waste water The fresh water obtained from the company s own groundwater supply system is used over and over again thanks to in-house recycling. Water is not actually consumed during the manufacture of paper. Instead, the fresh water used as process water in the paper-making process re-enters the environment again in the form of purified wastewater, steam from the dryer section and as moisture in the paper produced. In line with the reduction in fresh water usage, there was therefore also a drop in specific wastewater of more than 3 %, which brings it significantly below our target figure of 4 l/kg. Less gratifying is the 4.5% increase in the quantity of solid matter present in the wastewater. Since the volume of paper sludge that was filtered out climbed at the same time (see 3.3 Solid waste), the increase in the content of solids does not necessarily mean a worsening of filtering efficiency in the wastewater filter. This notwithstanding, our technology department has commenced a project aimed at improving the efficiency of our wastewater pre-treatment process. On , Ziegler Paper Mill became subject to the wastewater legislation of the community of Grellingen in respect of the wastewater it discharges. Since this time, TOC content (TOC = total organic carbon) has been the wastewater component on which basis we are liable to pay costs for subsequent biological purification. For this reason, the table below also includes TOC content from 2010 onwards. Unlike solids content, whose composition can be either organic or inorganic, TOC covers all organic compounds (both solid and dissolved). Auch im Verlaufe des Jahres 2012 entnahm das Amt für Umweltschutz und Energie zur Überprüfung der Beschaffenheit unseres Abwassers wieder Stichproben. 7 Umweltbelastung I Environmental impact ecofootprint 3.2 Abluft Abluft entsteht in signifikanten Mengen bei der Be- und Entlüftung der Papiermaschine und der Fabrikationshallen: Die Belastung durch organische Verunreinigungen aus Zellstoff und anderen Rohstoffen ist zwar nachweisbar, als Emission jedoch irrelevant. Die Sichtbarkeit der Abluftströme beim Austritt in die Atmosphäre wird durch den dabei kondensierenden Wasserdampf in der Abluft erzeugt. Erzeugung von Strom und Wärme in der Energiezentrale durch Verbrennung von Erdgas: Bei der Abluft der Energiezentrale ist zu unterscheiden zwischen Emission der Luftschadstoffe Kohlenmonoxid (CO), Schwefeldioxid (SO 2 ), Stickoxide (NO x ) und Russ mit eher regionalen Auswirkungen und Freisetzung des Klimagases Kohlendioxid CO 2 aus fossilen Brennstoffen mit globalen Auswirkungen Luftschadstoffe CO, SO 2, NO x, Russ Im Gegensatz zur Papiermaschine ist die Energiezentrale als Emissionsquelle sehr relevant. Aus diesem Grunde unterliegt die Energiezentrale der Kontrolle durch die Kontrollbehörde (Lufthygieneamt beider Basel). Am wurde im Auftrag des Lufthygieneamtes beider Basel von einer beauftragten Firma eine Abluftmessung in der Energiezentrale durchgeführt. Alle Grenzwerte wurden sicher eingehalten Freisetzung von fossilem CO 2 Die Erzeugung von Wärme und Strom erfolgt bei Ziegler Papier durch die Verbrennung von Erdgas in einer Wärmekraftkopplungsanlage mit Gasturbine zur Stromerzeugung und Abhitzekessel zur Dampfproduktion unter Erreichung einer möglichst hohen Energieeffizienz. Dabei entsteht auch das Klimagas CO 2. Seit 1999 ist in der Schweiz ein CO 2 -Gesetz zur Reduktion der CO 2 -Emissionen aus der energetischen Nutzung von fossilen Brennstoffen in Kraft, welches per ausgelaufen ist. Ziegler Papier hat von der Möglichkeit im Gesetz Gebrauch gemacht, sich durch eine freiwillige Vereinbarung mit dem Bund über konkrete Reduktionsziele von der CO 2 -Abgabe befreien zu lassen. Dabei wird dem Betrieb jährlich ein Zielkontingent zugewiesen, von welchem die tatsächlichen Emissionen abgezogen werden. 3.2 Waste air Significant quantities of waste air are produced by Ventilation and air-extraction of the paper machine and manufacturing halls: Although the presence of organic pollutants resulting from pulp and other raw materials can be detected, they are irrelevant as an emission. The fact that waste air can be seen escaping into the atmosphere is due to the presence of condensed water vapour in the waste air. Generation of electricity and heat in the central power plant through the combustion of natural gas: When talking about the waste air from our central power plant, a distinction must be made between the emission of the air pollutants carbon monoxide (CO), sulphur dioxide (SO 2 ), nitrogen oxides (NO x ) and soot, all of which tend to have a regional impact and the release of the greenhouse gas CO Air pollutants CO, SO 2, NO x, soot Unlike the paper machine, the central power plant is very relevant as a source of emissions. For this reason, it is inspected by an official monitoring authority (Basel Air Pollution Control Office). On , waste air in the central power plant was measured by an authorised company on behalf of the Basel Air Pollution Control Office. The examination showed that all limits were safely complied with Release of fossil CO 2 Heat and electricity are generated at Ziegler Paper Mill by burning natural gas in a combined heat and power plant with a gas turbine for generating electricity and a waste heat boiler for producing steam with emphasis on the best possible energy efficiency. This produces CO 2, a gas which has a major impact on the environment. In 1999, Switzerland introduced legislation aimed at reducing fossil fuel emissions of CO 2 resulting from energy generation; this legislation came to an end on Ziegler Paper Mill took advantage of the opportunity afforded by this legislation to enter into a voluntary agreement with the Swiss Federation to meet concrete reduction targets in order to avoid paying the government s CO 2 levy. Under this arrangement, the company was allocated a target quota every year from which actual emissions were deducted. 7

Für detaillierte Angaben verweisen wir auf unsere CO 2 Broschüre. Das seit dem in Kraft gesetzte aktuelle CO 2 -Gesetz ist anders aufgebaut und weist den zur Teilnahme am Emissionshandel verpflichteten Firmen CO 2 -Kontingente zu, welche auf europäischen Industrie-Benchmarks beruhen. As seen in the table above, since quotas were allocated in 2008 Ziegler Paper has always had a significant positive balance resulting from the difference between our CO 2 quota and the volume of CO 2 actually produced. The CO 2 legislation that has been in force since is conceived differently and allocates quotas to companies obliged to participate in emissions trading CO 2 that are based on European industrial benchmarks. 3.3 Abfälle Unser Abfallmanagement steht unter dem Motto: «Vermeiden Recyceln Verwerten!» Der dominante Abfall bei der Papierherstellung und -ausrüstung ist der Papierausschuss. Dieser Ausschuss wird praktisch vollständig intern recycelt und ist Bestandteil aller Faserrezepturen. Aus der mechanischen Kläranlage fällt als Abfall Papierschlamm an. Der Papierschlamm besteht zur Hauptsache aus Faser- und Füllstoffen. Der anfallende Papierschlamm wird seit 2007 in einer nahe gelegenen Anlage zu wertvollem, klimaneutralem Biogas vergärt. Der Anfall an Papierschlamm betrug im Berichtsjahr 14,8 kg/to Papier (2011: 13.0 kg/to; 2010: 10.9 kg/to) und ist damit weiter angestiegen. Wir haben damit gegenüber früher deutlich höhere Faserverluste zu verzeichnen, deren Ursache wir zurzeit auf den Grund gehen. Unsere Papierprodukte sind nach Gebrauch durch unsere Kunden voll rezyklierbar und stellen einen für die Aufrechterhaltung des Altpapier-Faserkreislaufes unabdingbaren Frischfasereintrag dar. Dieser Aspekt wird bei ökologischen Vergleichen zwischen frischfaserbasierenden und altpapierbasierenden Papierprodukten oft völlig ausser Acht gelassen. 3.3 Solid waste Our waste management programme is governed by the motto: Prevent recycle re-use! The major waste product in paper production and finishing is the manufacturer s own paper scrap. Virtually all our scrap is recycled internally and forms a component in all our fibre recipes. The mechanical treatment plant also produces waste in the form of paper sludge. This sludge consists primarily of fibres and fillers. Since 2007, the paper sludge we produce has been fermented to create valuable, environmentally-neutral biogas in a plant located near the mill. The year under review saw the production of 14.8 kg of paper sludge for every tonne of paper manufactured (2011: 13.0 kg; 2010: 10.9 kg). This figure shows that we are losing considerably more fibre than we did in previous years and we are currently seeking the cause of this. Our paper products can be completely recycled by our customers after use and make an essential contribution to the fresh fibre needed to maintain the waste paper fibre cycle. This aspect is often completely ignored when ecological comparisons are made between paper products based on virgin pulp and those using recycled paper. 8

Die Grenzwerte an der Arealgrenze werden gut eingehalten. 3.4 Noise In the year covered by this report, no complaints were received from local residents. Noise emission limits along the perimeter of the mill site were complied with in full. 4. Havarien 4. Accidents Im Berichtsjahr waren weder Havarien noch andere Vorkommnisse zu verzeichnen, die den Boden belastet oder das Wasser (Birs, Grundwasser) gefährdet hätten. There were no accidents or other incidents that might have resulted in contamination of the soil or water (River Birs, groundwater) in the year under review. 5. Immissionen und Arbeitssicherheit 5. Pollution and work safety Gemäss der gesetzlichen Verpflichtung, aber auch aus Respekt gegenüber unseren Mitarbeitenden und deren Gesundheit, sorgen wir im Betrieb für bestmöglichen Immissionsschutz und optimale Arbeitssicherheit. In compliance with our legal obligations, but also out of respect for our employees and their health, we ensure the best possible standards of work safety and protection against pollution within the mill. 5.1 Immissionsschutz Die Immissionen des Bedienpersonals beschränken sich im Wesentlichen auf Lärm, welchem wir durch Abgabe und mit der Pflicht zum Tragen von individuell abgestimmten persönlichen Gehörschützen wirkungsvoll begegnen. 5.1 Protection against pollution Basically, it is noise pollution that can impact operating personnel and we effectively combat this by distributing individually-customised ear protectors to staff and obliging them to wear these. 5.2 Arbeitssicherheit Die Belange der Arbeitssicherheit nimmt die Sicherheitskommission (SIKO) unter dem Vorsitz des Sicherheitsbeauftragten (SIBE) wahr. Die Sicherheitskommission verabschiedet für jedes Jahr ein Sicherheitsprogramm und überwacht dessen Umsetzung in enger Zusammenarbeit mit der SUVA, der für Arbeitssicherheit zuständigen Bundesanstalt. Diese hat denn auch im Berichtsjahr ein entsprechendes Audit durchgeführt. 5.2 Work safety The safety commission (SIKO) under the chairmanship of the safety manager (SIBE) is responsible for matters of work safety. Each year, the safety commission draws up a safety programme and monitors its implementation in close collaboration with the Swiss Accident Insurance Fund (SUVA), the government body responsible for work safety. SUVA performed an audit of our safety measures during the year under review. The occurrence of accidents moved in the right direction last year, though we are less satisfied with the number of accidents than with the improvement in the resultant time lost, which does indicate a reduction in their severity. 9

Achievement of goals Als konkretes Umweltziel hatte die Geschäftsleitung für 2012 Folgendes festgelegt: The Management had set the following concrete environmental goal for 2012: Umwelt: Einführung des biozidarmen Schleimbekämpfungssystems im Betriebsmassstab. Zielerreichung: Das biozidarme Schleimbekämpfungssystem ist ohne Unterbruch erfolgreich in Betrieb. Environment: Introduction of a factory-scale low-biocide system to combat mucilage. Achievement: the low-biocide system is successfully operating without interruption. Arbeitssicherheit: Verringerung der Sachschäden wertmässig um 20% gegenüber Zielerreichung: Das Ziel wurde aufgrund eines grossen Einzelschadens (Materialbruch) nicht erreicht. Aus diesem Grunde wurde dieses Ziel auf das folgende Jahr fortgeschrieben. Work Safety: Reduction in damage to property to the value of 20% compared with Achievement: The target was not achieved due to a single major incident (material breakdown). For this reason, the objective was postponed until the following year. 8. Nächste Ziele 8. Future objectives Umwelt: Optimierung der Abwasserbehandlung in Bezug auf Feststoffgehalt/TOC. Ab dem 2. Semester soll der Feststoffgehalt im Wochenmittel zu mind. 80% bei max. 100 mg/l liegen. Arbeitssicherheit: Verringerung der Sachschäden wertmässig um 20% gegenüber Environment: Optimisation of wastewater treatment with respect to solids content/toc. From the second half of the year, it is intended that solids content on a weekly average should be a minimum of 80% with maximum 100 mg/l.
