The world's largest maker of thin film solar modules is among the main suppliers to Italy, which in 2010 was the world's No. 2 market in terms of new installed photovoltaic capacity that turns sunlight into power. "In 2010, we did about 200 megawatt of sales for projects in Italy and we hope to grow this number this year," Brandon Mitchener, the U.S. company's director of

"Today, solar in the fastest growing industry in the United States... Our goal for

8 solar is 10 gigawatts by 2015," said Tom Kimbis, director of policy and research at the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA), the U.S. industry's trade group. SEIA has set the 10 GW target for three solar technologies: photovoltaic (PV), concentrated solar power (CSP) and solar heating and cooling, with the bulk of growth seen coming from PV and CSP technologies, Kimbis told an international solar conference in northern Italy. A total of about 1 GW of solar capacity of the three technologies was installed in the United States in 2010, with electric systems, including PV which transforms sunlight into electricity, and CSP accounting for about 960 MW, according to the SEIA data. About GW of total solar capacity is expected to be installed this year, with the growth driven by PV technology, Kimbis said. PV systems, which account for the lion's share of U.S. installed capacity, currently stand at 2.1 GW, with over 150,000 systems operating across the country, according to the SEIA. The U.S. market for solar energy rose to $6 billion in 2010 from $3.6 billion in 2009, according to the SEIA. Even while U.S. capacity grew last year, its share of worldwide PV installations slipped to 5 percent from 6.5 percent in 2009 due to booming growth in Germany and Italy, where solar players took advantage of generous government incentives, SEIA said in March. [ID:nN ] This year SEIA expects U.S. PV installations to double from 2010, while growth globally slows due to subsidy cuts in Europe. By 2015, the association's projections show the U.S. share of global PV capacity reaching 15 percent, Kimbis said. FUTURE DRIVERS Future growth of solar energy will largely depend on extension of federal tax incentives, improvement of access to financing for small and mid size operators and better access to grid connections, Kimbis said. "Continuous tax incentive policy, financing and grid access those are the three areas that are going to drive the market. If we can get those to work, we will hit the (10 GW) target," Kimbis told Reuters on the sidelines of the conference. Expressing his personal view, Kimbis said French energy major Total's <TOTF.PA> landmark $1.37 billion bid for a majority stake in U.S. solar group SunPower <SPWRA.O> would spur merger activity on the U.S. solar market. "The environment in the United States is getting more and more competitive, and we are going to see more mergers and acquisitions happening," he said echoing comments of many participants of the conference about an impact of Total's offer on the global solar market. Mai (Reuters) Die globale Solarbranche stellt sich angesichts der Subventionskürzungen in ihren wichtigsten Märkten Deutschland und Italien auf harte Zeiten ein. Die Kappung der staatlichen Unterstützung werde in diesem Jahr der Nachfrage nach Photovoltaik Anlagen einen kräftigen Dämpfer verpassen und damit die Preise in den Keller drücken, warnten am Mittwoch einstimmig Hersteller aus den USA und Norwegen. Die deutschen Unternehmen machen sich darauf gefasst, dass 2011 hierzulande deshalb deutlich weniger Anlagen

11 installiert werden als noch im vergangenen Jahr. Die Solarbranche ist auf staatliche Unterstützung angewiesen, um mit herkömmlichen Stromquellen wie Atom und Kohlekraftwerken konkurrieren zu können. Deutschland ist dabei weltweit ein Vorreiter: Das Erneuerbare Energien Gesetz (EEG) hat das Land trotz seiner relativ ungünstigen geografischen Lage mit Abstand zum weltgrößten Absatzmarkt für die Industrie gemacht. Italien ist wegen der dortigen Subventionen die weltweite Nummer zwei. In beiden Ländern wird die Förderung nun deutlich gedrosselt, wobei in Italien derzeit besonders große Unsicherheit herrscht, weil das Ausmaß der Kürzungen noch immer unklar ist. Zwar hat die Atomkatastrophe in Japan zuletzt in der Branche die Hoffnung auf einen neuen Investitionsboom geschürt. Davon erwarten die Hersteller aber erst langfristig eine Geschäftsbelebung, während ihnen derzeit besonders die Unklarheit in Italien aufs Gemüt schlägt. FIRST SOLAR SETZT NUN AUF DEN HEIMATMARKT USA Das gemessen am Börsenwert weltgrößte Unternehmen der Branche, First Solar<FSLR.O>, hofft etwa, den Italien Effekt zumindest teilweise durch Mega Projekte in den USA auszugleichen. Konzernchef Rob Gillette stimmte die Anleger dennoch auf ein schwieriges zweites Halbjahr ein die Aktie stürzte deshalb um mehr als acht Prozent ab. Bereits zu Jahresanfang musste der Konzern wegen hoher Kosten und fallender Preise einen Gewinnrückgang verbuchen minus 33 Prozent auf 116 Millionen Dollar, während der Umsatz bei 567 Millionen Dollar stagnierte. Ähnlich äußerte sich der norwegische Hersteller Renewable Energy Corp<REC.OL> (REC). "Die Subventionskürzungen werden das Wachstum der globalen Nachfrage 2011 dämpfen", erklärte das Unternehmen. "Auch wenn die Nachfrage in vielen Schwellenländern stark zunimmt, reicht dies nicht aus, um das schwächere Wachstum in den wichtigsten europäischen Märkten auszugleichen." Die hiesige Branche geht davon aus, dass in diesem Jahr in Deutschland Solar Kapazitäten mit einer maximalen Leistung von fünf bis sechs Gigawatt neu installiert werden nach mehr als sieben Gigawatt im vergangenen Jahr. Damit sei die gesamte Leistung dieser Anlagen Ende des Jahres auf 17 Gigawatt gestiegen, was der Leistung von 17 Großkraftwerken entspreche, sagte Klaus Bernhard Hoffmann, Direktor beim Bundesverband Solarwirtschaft (BSW), der Nachrichtenagentur Reuters bei einer Branchenkonferenz in Norditalien.
