Through a comparison of Büchner s and Stifter s treatment of themes such as history, nature, violence, and the body as well as a comparison of their stylistic peculiarities, this course examines two seemingly irreconcilable traditions in the formulation of modernity. Readings will be available as pdf-files on the coursewebsite and as master copies in the course folder. Assessment Students are expected to partcipate actively. This includes preparing a short introduction for one of the texts: students should select specific passages from the text (not to exceed six pages), formulate specific questions about these passages, and distribute this material no later than a week before the meeting on the course website. In the meeting, students should present for about 15 minutes on their selection of passages. 30%

These responses should be about 600 words long, and should be posted at least two days prior to the meeting on the course website. write six reactions to their peers response papers. Each of these reactions should be about 300 words long, and should be posted at least one day prior to the meeting on the course website. write two responses to a critical essay listed in the bibliography. These responses should be about 600 words long, and are due one day prior to the meeting. write a term paper of about 10 pages (undergraduate) or 15 pages (graduate) in length.
