3 Student 1 Card D: Holiday preferences and experiences You have two minutes to look at the photo. Your teacher will then ask you questions about the photo and about topics related to Holiday preferences and experiences. This part of the test will last no longer than three minutes. 3

4 Student 1 Commentary Photo Card The student responds to all five compulsory questions within the maximum time limit of three minutes. Despite some conspicuous inaccuracies, most intended messages are conveyed. All responses show some development. A number of simple opinions are given, but none of these are effectively explained. This means that, despite the evidence of development, the performance cannot access the top two tiers in the assessment criteria. In this case, even if there had been evidence of an explained opinion, it is unlikely that a higher mark could be considered because many responses lack the necessary clarity. 9 marks awarded. Conversation This part of the test lasts for 3 minutes 54 seconds in total with roughly even coverage of the two prescribed topic areas. Content The student responds to all questions asked, sustaining a conversation and demonstrating the ability to develop most responses to some degree. Opinions are regularly offered and some are explained. However, there are occasions when messages are not clearly conveyed, and a couple of mispronunciations result in non-communication. These factors, along with the lack of any really extended answers, mean that this performance falls into the Sufficient category. 6 marks awarded. Range and Accuracy of Language Vocabulary is rather limited and there is quite a lot of repetition of simple opinion words. Sentences are also quite basic and often poorly constructed. There is one attempt at a weil-clause and the use of two modal verb forms. There are attempts at past and future tenses which communicate information but are poorly structured. 5 marks awarded. Pronunciation and Intonation There are a number of conspicuous mispronunciations, a couple of which prevent communication. The anglicised greye Augen and near der Bahnof are particularly obvious. However, pronunciation is generally accurate enough for most messages to be understood without much delay. 3 marks awarded. 4

5 Interaction and Fluency Responses are given promptly and a conversation is sustained; however, responses are never extended or flowing in the way which would be required to achieve a higher mark. 3 marks awarded. 6 Student 1 Transcript Photo Card Was kannst du auf diesem Foto sehen? Es gibt eine Strad mit Jugen. Es gibt Berg und Volleyball spielen. Das finde sehr gut und ich liebe der Stadt. Wie findest du den Urlaub am Strand? Ich liebe Urlaubs mit warme Wetter und sonnig und ich mag gern schwimmen. Ich finde die Strad gut für mich, weil ich sportlich ist und das ist sehr Spaß. Wohin fährst du gern in Urlaub? In die Urlaub ich bin fahren Osterreich. Das finde sehr langweilig und der Wetter war sehr schrecklich. Meine Familie liebe Osterreich. Was isst und trinkst du gern im Urlaub? Ich trinks zu gern Cola und Chocomilk. Das finde gut aber ich liebe Wasser und ich finde Wasser besser als Cola or Schokomilk. Und was isst du gern? Ich essen Pommes und Fisch. Das finde sehr lecker und das ist gut für mich aber ich esse gesund Essen. Das war sehr schrecklich. Ich prefer.. Ich lieben ungesund Essen. Was machst du diesen Sommer? Ich werde schwimmen mit meinen Freunden und ich will in die Stadt mit meiner Familie. Ich will trainen und ich will essen. Und warst du schon einmal in Deutschland? Nein, ich mag gern Deutschland. Ich finde Deutschland sehr langweilig und der Wetter ist zu kalt für mich aber mein Familie liebe Deutschland. Letztes Jahr mein Familie ins Deutschland gefahren. Und bleibst du lieber in einem Hotel oder auf einem Campingplatz? Ich finde der Hotel als better. Der Hotel hat besser Bädezimmer. Ich finde die Campingplatz sehr langweilig und zu kalt. General Conversation Also, jetzt weiter. Gehst du gerne ins Kino? Ja, ich liebe das Kino und ich liebe Filme. Ich bin ins die Kino mit meine Freunden James am Woche. Meine Lieblingsfilme ist Bo, Das ist sehr lustig. Was siehst du gern im Fernsehen? Ich sehen Komodie. Ich finde Komodie sehr lustig und sehr cool aber meine Familie lieben Schneifenopera. Ich finde Schneifenopera zu langweilig und sehr doof. Beschreibe deine beste Freundin. Meine beste Freundin ist Harry. Er ist sehr intelligent und nett aber nervig. Es hat braune Haare und greye Augen. Und machst du viel Sport? Ich viel Sport manchmal. Ich finde Sport ok. Ich manchmal Tennis spielen und ich mag gern schwimmen aber ich hasse gern Fußball. 6

7 Und was hast du letztes Wochenende mit deiner Familie gemacht? Letztes Wochenende mit meiner Familie ich bin die Stadt gegangen und ich bin die Kinos am Wochenende gegangen. Das war ok. Und welche Freizeitaktivität wirst du nächstes Wochenende machen? Nächste Wochenende ich werde mit meiner Freundin Tennis gespielen und ich bin ich werde in die Stadt mit meiner Familie. Meine Mutter und mich will einkaufen Kleidungs. Ok danke schön. Und jetzt weiter. Wie findest du die Schule? Ich finde die Schule ok. Meine Schule ist sehr groß mit achtundneunzig Klaschenzimmer. Der Arbeit ist sehr stressig. Und was ist dein Lieblingsfach? Meine Lieblingsfach ist Englisches, weil ich einfach finde und ich lieber Theater mag. Theater ist sehr Spaß und einfach. Und beschreib deine Gegend. Ich wohne near der Bahnhof. Meine Haus ist zu klein. Meine Gelden ist.. hat keine Geschäfte. Das finde sehr langweilig. Und hilfst du zu Hause? Nein, ich fei ich finde Hausaufarbeit sehr langweilig. Meine Mutter liebe die Hausaufsarbeits. Und was hast du in letzter Zeit in deiner Gegend gemacht? In meiner Gegend ich bin in die Stadt und ich gern ins Geschäften. Das war ok aber meine Gegend ist zu klein für mich. Und was müssen wir tun, um die Umwelt zu schützen? Wir müssen offentlich Verkehrsmittel und wir wir müssen benutzen umweltfreundlich Produkten. Die Umwelt ist sehr wichtig. OK. Danke schön. 7

8 Student 2 Card B: School and college You have two minutes to look at the photo. Your teacher will then ask you questions about the photo and about topics related to School and college. This part of the test will last no longer than three minutes. 8

9 Student 2 Commentary Photo Card The student responds clearly to all five compulsory questions and some supplementary ones within the maximum time limit. The first response about the content of the picture is nicely developed. Thereafter, responses go beyond the minimum, but are never really extended. Opinions are offered, and two of these are explained, thus meeting the criteria of the top tier marks. However, it is the lack of consistent development of response which places this performance at the top of the mark range. 12 marks awarded. Conversation This part of the test stops just short of the maximum time limit with even coverage of the two prescribed topic areas. Content The student responds to all questions asked, and an authentic conversation is sustained. Opinions are regularly offered and explained. There are occasions when the student develops responses; however, he never really takes the initiative and the performance is punctuated by a number of shorter responses. This is evidenced by reviewing the transcript and comparing how much the student says compared to the teacher. One has the sense that this is potentially a very able student, and this performance underlines the need for responses to be consistently developed in order for such students to access the highest marks. 7 marks awarded. Range and Accuracy of Language There is a good range of vocabulary and grammatically sound structures. Subordinating conjunctions are used (weil / dass / um.. zu..), along with some present tense modal verbs forms, a direct object pronoun (ihn) and the reflexive pronoun sich. Past and future tense verb forms are successfully used and there is even one instance of a passive tense. Unfortunately, the relative lack of development identified within the Content mark, also means that this student is not able to fully show off his potential in terms of using the wide range of vocabulary and structures necessary for the highest marks. 8 marks awarded. Pronunciation and Intonation Pronunciation is excellent throughout, and the performance sounds impressively German for this level. The only conspicuous mispronunciation in the entire piece is recycle. 5 marks awarded. 9

10 Interaction and Fluency Responses are given promptly and there is some flow of language. There is also hesitancy at times and the performance lacks the sustained fluency and sense of taking over (initiative) necessary for the highest mark. 4 marks awarded. Er liegt auf dem Bett und ein Junge sitzt auf dem Stuhl und er benutzt der Computer, vielleicht für sein Hausaufgaben. Wo machst du deine Hausaufgaben? Ich mache meine.. mein Hausaufgaben in mein Zimmer. Wie findest du die Schule? Die Schule sind sehr alt und sehr beliebte in England. Ich liebe meine Schule, weil die Lehrer sehr nett sind und ich habe viele Freunde hier. Machst du gern Hausaufgaben? Ja, ich muss meine Hausaufgaben machen, weil ich gute Noten bekommen will. Was ist dein Lieblingsfach in der Schule? Natürlich ist Deutsch mein Lieblingsfach. Warum? Weil es mir Spass macht. Die Lehrer ist sehr nett und sympatisch und ich mag Fremdspreche. Lernst du andere Fremdsprachen ausser deutsch? Ja, ich lerne französisch und ich lerne russisch. Du lernst russisch? Warum? Weil es mir Spaß macht. Ich kann nach Russland gehen, wenn ich möchte. Welche Sprache ist schwieriger? Russisch oder deutsch? Meiner Meinung nach ist russisch schwieriger. Was kannst du mit von deiner Schule erzählen. Du sagst, sie ist eine sehr alte schule, ja? Ja. Erzähl mir bitte über deine Schule. Wie bitte? Wann wurde die Schule gegründet, zum Besispiel? Seit mehrere Jahre. 3 min time limit reached. General Conversation Wir reden jetzt über Topic 1 Socialising. Wie alt bist du Jordon? Ich bin sechzehn Jahre alt. Hast du Geschwister? Ja, ich habe ein Bruder, aber leider habe ich kein Schwester. Beschreib mir deinen Bruder bitte. Mein Bruder ist zwölf Jahre alt. Er ist ziemlich klein und ein bisschen dick wie mein Vater. Meiner Meinung nach ist er zu faul. Er hilft zu Hause nie und das mich ärgert. 11

12 Wie kommst du mit deinem Bruder aus? Ich mag ihn nicht. Ach so. Was für Hobbys hast du, Jordon? Ich spiele Fußball und Hockey. Wie oft? Ich spiele Hockey jeden Sonntag im Verein. Mit wem? Mit meinen Freunden. Es liegt nicht weit von der Schule. Deiner Meinung nach, wie wichtig ist Sport für junge Leute? Sehr wichtig. Man muss sich bewegen, um fit zu bleiben. Aber Sport ist nicht die einzige Problem. Man muss auch gesund essen. Das ist auch wahr. Schön. Was hast du letztes Wochenende gemacht? Fußball gespielt, ja, und vielleicht sonst noch etwas? Ich habe an eine Spiele teilgenommen. Wir haben gewonnen. Es hat mir sehr gut Ja, natürlich. Du bist sechzehn. Wann hast du Geburtstag? Zwanzigsten Januar. Wie hast du deinen letzten Geburtstag gefeiert? Ich habe ich bin in einen Restaurant mit meinen Freunden gegangen und nachdem wir gegessen haben, geben meinen Freunden mir geben mir meine Freunden Geschenke. Das war eine gute Überraschung. Natürlich, ja. Isst du lieber in einem Restaurant mit Freunden oder mit Eltern? Es kommt darauf an. Wenn ich mit meinen Freunden essen, könnte ich später nach Hause kommen. Das ist richtig. Gut, Topic 4 Making Choices, ja? Jordon, bist du umweltbewusst? Ja, ich recycle Altpaper, Flaschen und Dosen und ich wasche das Auto selten. Warum ist Recycling so wichtig? Weil es die Umgebung hilft. Was ist deiner Meinung nach das grösste Umweltproblem? Die Fabrike werden immer mehr gebaut. Ja, das ist wahr. Kannst du kochen? Nein. Zuhause kocht immer meine Mutter und mein Bruder kocht auch, weil er in der Zukunft Koch werden möchte. Bist du im grossen und ganzen ein gesunder Mensch? Ja, ich mich bewege und ich esse immer gesundes Essen. Was machst du, wenn du krank bist? Wenn ich krank bin, bleibe ich ins Bett, um zu erholen. Ich nehme an, du rauchst, nicht?. Du rauchst nicht? Nein. Nein. Was hältst du von Leuten, die rauchen? Sie sind.. Meiner Meinung nach sind sie sehr dumm und blöd. Warum? Weil Rauchen kann zu Krebs führen. 12

13 Ja, das ist wahr. Ich werde nie rauchen, weil ich gesund werden will. Hast du einen Traumjob? Ja. Ich möchte Mathematiker werden. Ja. Und wo möchtest du arbeiten? Vielleicht in einer Bank oder mit meiner Mutter in einem Büro. In England oder im Ausland? Es kommt darauf an. Ich kann nach Russland arbeiten, weil ich russisch in der Schule studiere. Aber ich denke, dass ich in England bleiben werde. Alles klar. Gut, sehr interessant. 13
