4 PIXEL+COLORS TRENDS 1 DISPLAY TRENDS Transflective Displays: Native & Alterna Low power consumption, Longer backlight lifetime, Low heat emi No extra thickness, Sunlight readable, Better contrast,... Wesentliche Entwicklungen am Displaymarkt beziehen sich unter anderem auf die untenstehenden Themen. Sie stellen zugleich allgemeine Unterscheidungskriterien von Displays dar, ohne jedoch auf die besonderen Kompetenzen und Möglichkeiten einzelner Hersteller einzugehen. 1. Verfügbarkeit Das Thema (Langzeit-) Verfügbarkeit steht in den meisten Applikationen an oberster Stelle. Für Industriedisplays werden somit drei Jahre als ein Minimum und fünf Jahre als typischer Wert in Bezug auf die Verfügbarkeit festgelegt. Innerhalb dieses Zeitraumes darf es bei Produktabkündigungen (Polarisator, Displayglas, Controller, Komponenten auf dem FPC, ), sprich hardware- und softwareseitig, zu keiner Anpassung seitens des Kundens kommen. Jegliche PCN (Product Change Notification) in der Zeit muss gleichzeitig den entsprechenden Ersatz mitankündigen. Obwohl der Industriebereich langsamen und leisen Schrittes dem Display-Consumermarkt folgt, gilt es bei neuen, speziellen Displaygrößen und hochauflösenden Varianten immer noch die Herkunft des Panels (Displayglases), ebenso wie dessen Zielmärkte und Applikationen, zu prüfen. Smartphones und Tablets sind in diesem Fall immer noch die Vorreiter in Sachen optischer Eindruck. Während einige Industriedisplays mit bereits etablierten Technologien diesen Applikationen um nichts nachstehen. 2. Bildpunkte und Formate Das Weitformat 16:9 hat im kleineren bis mittelgroßen TFT-Bereich dem eingesessenen 4:3 Seitenverhältnis bereits einiges an Marktanteil abgenommen. Außerdem ist speziell beim consumer-getriebenen Weitformaten der Preisverfall ein deutlich größerer, während das»alte«format kaum günstiger wird. Trotzdem bleiben Größen wie 3.5 (320x240), 5.7 (640x480) oder 8.4 (800x600), wie einige weitere, auch die nächsten Jahre noch im Portfolio der Glaslieferanten. In nicht jeder Applikation kann das Weniger an Höhe akzeptiert werden. Generell ist zu sehen, dass sämtliche Displaygrößen neben deren»standardauflösung«, zb 7 mit 800x480 Pixeln, und der nächsten Höheren, mittlerweile noch hochauflösendere Varianten verfügbar sind. Bei einem 10.1 TFT sind das 1024x600 (WSVGA), 1280x800 (WXGA) und 1920x1200 (WUXGA). Der Trend zum Weitformat und Zwischengrößen wie etwa 8 und 9 setzt sich weiter fort. 3. Erweiterte Blickwinkel Jedes Display mit TN (Twisted Nematic) Glas hat aufgrund der Ausrichtung der Flüssigkristalle eine bevorzugte Blickrichtung, üblicherweise 6 oder 12 Uhr. Um dem lästigen Effekt des Farbkippens in verschiedensten Einbausituationen (Hoch- oder Querformat) vorbeugen zu können, gibt es zwei Möglichkeiten: Die kostengünstige Lösung, welche eine merkbare Verbesserung dieses Effekts bietet, stellen spezielle Folien dar. Die Ablesewinkel werden erweitert, während der Kontrast gleich bleibt. Es gilt zu beachten, dass aufgrund des zusätzlichen Layers (Folie) eine Minderung der Helligkeit von ~70cd/m² entsteht. Die zweite Option ersetzt das Displayglas. MVA (Multi- Domain Vertical Alignment) oder IPS (In Plane Switchting) Gläser beugen dem Effekt, durch weite Ablesewinkel mit nahezu 90 und sehr hohem Kontrast, vor. Die Einbausituation (Hoch-/Querformat) kann somit ohne optische Einbußen willkürlich gewählt werden. Beide Technologien kamen in den letzten Jahren im Industriebereich bereits verstärkt zum Einsatz und bieten für eine Vielzahl an Displaygrößen ein optionales Feature. 4. Touchpanels und Cover-Gläser Es geht kaum ohne! Statt eines Mauszeigers kann der Finger oder ein Stift verwendet werden. Touchpanels kommen bereits bei kleinsten Displays, ob LCD oder OLED, zum Einsatz. Der Consumermarkt macht es vor: Egal ob für kleinere Displaygrößen bei Smartphones, mittelgroße Varianten für Tablets, oder große Infoterminals. Touchpanels kommen immer häufiger in Industriesteuerungen, der Automatisierung, aber auch der Medizintechnik zum Einsatz. Oft werden Touchpanels auch zur Steuerung von Maschinen als Industrie PC eingesetzt. Hier insbesondere, da diese weniger schmutzanfällig sind als andere Eingabegeräte wie etwa Tastaturen. Auch die Automobilbranche schlägt diesen Weg der intuitiven Bedienung ein. Immer öfter finden große Multifunktions-Touchpanels in neuen Mittelkonsolen und Armaturen ihre Anwendung. Nahezu jedes Display bietet daher ein Touchpanel zur einfacheren und moderneren Bedienung. Die alten Druckknöpfe und Taster am Bildschirmrand entfallen und die dadurch zur Verfügung stehende Fläche wird gleichzeitig für ein größeres Display, inklusive einem Touchpanel, genutzt. Nicht nur die Applikation wird dadurch aufgewertet, auch die Menüführung kann entsprechend erweitert werden. Ein Trend ist hier klar ersichtlich: Die kapazitiven Touchpanels machen das Rennen, während die etablierte resistive Technologie spezielle Anwendungsgebiete adressiert. Mit dem schnellen Wachstum wird auch der Einsatz von kundenspezifischen Cover- und Schutzgläsern immer häufiger. 5. Helligkeit und LED-Lebensdauer Displayanwendungen stellen immer höhere Ansprüche an das Display und dessen einzelne Komponenten. Daher stehen für Applikationen im Außenbereich entsprechend helle LED-Hintergrundbeleuchtungen mit bis zu 1500cd/m² zur Verfügung. Gleichzeitig die Grundlage für ein sonnenlichtablesbares Display. Neben dem Minimum von ~250cd/m², staffeln sich die Helligkeitsstufen über 500 und 1000 cd/m². Immer zu beachten gilt, jeder zusätzliche Layer, ein Coverglas, Touchpanel, eine spezielle Folie, bedeuten Einbußen in der Helligkeit. Dies gilt es, mit entsprechender Grundhelligkeit zu Transflective Mode Exterior Light Source Color Filter Backlight Half Mirror/ Transparent Backlight Mirror coating Electrode kompensieren. Ein Touchpanel etwa nimmt knappe 150cd/m² an Helligkeit. Die LED-Lebensdauer gibt den Zeitraum bis zum Erreichen von 50% der Anfangshelligkeit an Stunden stellen das Minimum dar, während Varianten mit den Standard darstellen. Das Maximum ist mit Stunden erreicht. Um die LED Lebensdauer entsprechend zu verlängern, ermöglichen LED Treiber das einfache Ansteuern und Mindern der Anfangshelligkeit. 6. Outdoorbeständigkeit Neben der erwähnten hohen Helligkeit, gilt es für raue Umgebungsbedingungen die Displays»wetterfest«zu machen. Der Standard Betriebstemperaturbereich von -20 C bis +70 C ist in solchen Fällen nicht ausreichend. Hier kommen spezielle Displays unter Verwendung eines robusteren Flüssigkristalls mit einem Betriebstemperaturbereich von bis zu -35 C bis +85 C zum Einsatz. Meist wird das ganze System mit erweiterten Parametern optimiert (zb einer langen LED Lebensdauer und hohen Helligkeit). Ein weiteres Kriterium für solche Displays stellt die Sonnenlichtablesbarkeit dar. Transflektive Varianten findet man immer weniger am Markt, stattdessen setzt man auf hohe Helligkeit und entsprechende Klebeverfahren (Optical Bonding), um innerhalb der Displayeinheit, optional mit Touch und/oder Coverglas, Reflexionen zu mindern. to 3.) Large multi-function touch panels can now be found in an increasing number of new center consoles and dashboards. Liquid Crystal Almost every display features a touch panel for easier, more modern operation. The push buttons and switches at the edge of the screen are disappearing, leaving more space for a larger display that includes a touch panel. This not only enhances the application itself, it can also allow for a more detailed menu guidance. Some of the major developments under way in the display market relate to the topics discussed below. At the same time, these represent general distinction criteria for displays, without going into the special expertise and capabilities of individual manufacturers. 1. Availability In most applications, the issue of (long term) availability is the top priority. As a result, three years are considered the minimum and five years as the typical value in terms of availability for industrial displays. Within this period, there must be no adaptation on the customer side in the case of product discontinuation announcements (polarizer, display glass, controller, FPC components,...) that is, neither in terms of hardware or software. Any product change notification (PCN) during this period must simultaneously announce the corresponding replacement. Although the industrial sector slowly and quietly follows on the footsteps of the display consumer market, one must still examine the origin of the panel (display glass) as well as its target markets and applications when it comes to new, special display sizes and high-resolution models. In this case, smartphones and tablets remain the forerunners in terms of visual impression, though some industrial displays using established technologies are in no way inferior to these applications. 2. Pixels and formats The 16:9 widescreen format has already eaten into the market share of the long-established 4:3 aspect ratio in the area of small to medium-sized TFT screens. Moreover, the price decline is significantly larger especially with consumer-driven widescreen formats, while the»old«format is hardly becoming more affordable. Nevertheless, sizes like 3.5 (320x 240), 5.7 (640x480) or 8.4 (800x600) and some others will remain in the portfolio of glass suppliers in the years to come. A reduction in height, however, is not acceptable in all applications. Anti reflective display In general, it can be said that, apart from the»standard resolutions«like 7 at 800x480 pixels and the next higher one, higher-resolution models are now also available. In the case of 10.1 TFTs, these are 1024x600 (WSVGA), 1280x800 (WXGA), and 1920x1200 (WUXGA). The trend toward widescreen displays and intermediate sizes like 8 and 9 continues unabated. 3. Wider viewing angles Due to the alignment of the liquid crystals, each display in a TN (twisted-nematic) glass has a preferred viewing angle, usually 6 or 12 o'clock. There are two ways of preventing the annoying color-tilting effect in different installation settings (portrait or landscape): The more affordable solution leading to a noticeable improvement of this effect are special films. These increase the viewing angle while maintaining the contrast. It should be noted, however, that the additional layer (film) results in a drop in brightness of ~70 cd/m². The second option involves the replacement of the display glass. Multi-domain vertical alignment (MVA) or inplane switching (IPS) glass types help prevent this effect by allowing wide viewing angles of up to almost 90 and a very high contrast. As a result, the installation mode (portrait/landscape) can be chosen without having to make any compromises in terms of viewing angle. In recent years, both technologies have seen an increasing use in industrial environments and offer an optional feature for a large number of display sizes. 4. Touch panels and cover glasses Can't live without them! Instead of a mouse cursor, you can use your finger or a stylus. Today, touch panels can already be found in very small size displays, both LCD and OLED. The consumer market is leading the way: be it in small displays like those of smartphones, medium sizes for tablets, or large info terminals. Touch panels are increasingly found in industrial controls, in automation, and even in medical technology. They are also frequently used to control machines in industrial PCs. They are particularly suitable for such applications because they are less sensitive to dirt than other input One trend is clearly evident here: Capacitive touch panels are winning the race, while the established resistive technology now addresses special areas of application. The more widespread use of capacitive touch panels also leads to an increase in the use of customized cover and protection glasses. 5. Brightness and LED lifetime Display applications are increasingly exacting for displays and their individual components. Therefore, displays for outdoor applications come with a correspondingly strong LED backlight of up to 1500cd/m². This is also the requirement for a display readable under sunlight. In addition to the minimum of ~250cd/m², brightness levels run through 500 and 1000cd/m². One must always keep in mind that each additional layer, i.e. a cover glass, touch panel, or a special film will compromise brightness. Therefore, there must be enough background brightness to compensate for this loss. A touch panel for instance, will absorb around 150cd/m² of brightness. The LED lifetime indicates the period until the display drops to 50% of its original brightness. 20,000 hours are the minimum, while models with 50,000 hours now represent the standard. The maximum lifetime for a display is 70,000 hours. In order to extend the LED lifetime accordingly, LED drivers allow for a direct control and reduction of the original brightness. 6. Suitability for outdoors In addition to the high brightness mentioned above, displays must also be made»weatherproof«for use under harsh environmental conditions. In these cases, the standard operating temperature range of -20 C ~ +70 C is not sufficient. Special displays using a robust liquid crystal are used in such cases, boasting an operating temperature range of up to -35 C ~ +85 C. For the most part, the entire system is optimized with extended parameters (e.g. long LED lifetime and high brightness). An additional criterion for such displays is their readability under direct sunlight. The number of transflective variants in the market is continuously declining, and modern displays rely on high brightness and new bonding techniques (optical bonding) to reduce reflections within the display unit, optionally available with a touch screen and/or a cover glass. 2017/18 5

6 PIXEL+COLORS ÜBERSICHT 2 TFT OVERVIEW Thin Film Transistors (TFTs) unterscheiden sich gegenüber den Passiv-Matrix LCD Anzeigen durch eine zusätzliche Schicht an Dünnschichttransistoren im Aufbau. Dieser Aufbau ermöglicht weitaus größere Displaydiagonalen als es bei den Passiv-Matrix LCDs der Fall ist. TFTs werden durch die Angabe der Größe in Inch definiert. While bar-type TFTs come in 6.3, 8.8, 12.3, 19 and 28 sizes focusing on special applications such as ticket vending machines and public transport display systems, open-frame TFTs come with a pre-installed aluminum frame that allows for an easy front or rear mount. These support VGA, DVI, and HDMI interfaces, as well as touch interfaces like USB/RS232 for the resistive version and I2C/USB for the capacitive version.
