2 Abstract Anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility (AMS) is often used as a proxy for mineral fabric in deformed or igneous rocks. AMS results from mineral alignment during deformation in all rock types or emplacement processes in igneous rocks combined with intrinsic single crystal anisotropy. A strong preferred orientation of ferromagnetic minerals, which can occur as matrix minerals or as inclusions within a silicate mineral, can lead to a deviation of the geomagnetic field direction that is either recorded by a rock in the case of paleomagnetism, or in the induced magnetization when considering total magnetic field anomalies. In order to interpret magnetic fabrics in terms of rock texture, which are then related to magmatic flow, sedimentary processes, or rock deformation it is necessary to know the minerals that control the AMS and their respective intrinsic anisotropies. The aim of this thesis is to define the single-crystal AMS of the common rock-forming minerals olivine, pyroxene, amphibole and feldspar. The orientation of the principal magnetic susceptibility directions, as well as the shape and degree of the AMS ellipsoid is characterized for each of these mineral groups. Additionally, the dependence of AMS on the crystal lattice and the chemical composition is also considered. The phyllosilicates used in the study of Martín-Hernández and Hirt (2003) were reevaluated to obtain the paramagnetic susceptibility at a temperature of 77 K. The mineral collection investigated in this thesis contains 35 olivine, 63 pyroxene, 29 amphibole, 33 phyllosilicate and 31 feldspar crystals. The single crystals were oriented based on crystal habit and Laue X-ray diffraction. Their chemical composition was analyzed using laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectroscopy or electron probe microanalysis. Both methods are sensitive to atomic weight and thus not capable of directly measuring the relative amounts of Fe 2+ and Fe 3+. Because the oxidation state of iron can affect the AMS, Fe 2+ /Fe 3+ ratios were determined with Mössbauer spectroscopy on selected samples. Single crystals may contain ferromagnetic inclusions, which can grow along certain lattice planes. The type and concentration of these inclusions was characterized based on acquisition of isothermal remanent magnetization. Due to their large magnetic susceptibility, small amounts of ferromagnetic inclusions can dominate both the magnetic susceptibility and its anisotropy. Therefore, high-field magnetometry was used, because it allows for the separation of the diamagnetic or paramagnetic contributions from the ferrimagnetic contribution to the AMS. The former can then be attributed to the silicate minerals, while the latter is related to the ferromagnetic inclusions. To further understand the magnetic properties of the rock-forming minerals, high-field AMS measurements were repeated at 77 K, which enhances the paramagnetic susceptibility. The AMS degree is larger at 77 K compared to room temperature, and the increase is by a factor of approximately 8 in many minerals used in this study, and also in siderite. Several minerals show a change in AMS shape when decreasing the temperature, which is related to a directional dependence of the enhancement of the paramagnetic susceptibility at lower temperatures. This temperature-dependence was further investigated by monitoring the change in induced magnetization as a function of temperature between 300 K and 2 K. The results from this thesis show that the paramagnetic principal susceptibility directions are related to crystallographic axes in all of the investigated mineral groups. The orientation of the principal axes depends on crystal structure, chemical composition, and site occupancy and oxidation state of iron. In olivine, the maximum susceptibility is generally parallel to the c-axis, whereas the 1

3 orientation of the minimum susceptibility at room temperature depends on the iron concentration. The clinopyroxenes diopside, augite and aegirine have the intermediate susceptibility parallel to their crystallographic b-axis. The maximum susceptibility is at a 45 angle to the c-axis in diopside and augite, but parallel to c in aegirine. In the orthopyroxene enstatite, the maximum susceptibility is aligned with the c-axis, whereas the minimum is parallel to b. Many amphiboles, e.g. actinolite, ferroactinolite and hornblende have their maximum susceptibility parallel to the b-axis, and the minimum parallel to a*. Richterite is different; it has the intermediate susceptibility parallel to b and the minimum and maximum are scattered in the a-c-plane. Phyllosilicates generally have the minimum susceptibility normal to their basal plane, with usually no significant anisotropy within the basal plane. Phlogopite, however, can display an anisotropy in the basal plane. Feldspar possesses a weak AMS with the maximum susceptibility close to the c/c*-axis, and the minimum parallel to b. The degree of anisotropy increases with Fe concentration in each mineral group in general. However, the Fe 2+ /Fe 3+ ratio can also play a role. This is most prominently seen in clinopyroxenes, where aegirine, which contains mainly Fe 3+ has a very low AMS degree given its Fe content compared to diopside or augite, which incorporate mainly Fe 2+. Local ferromagnetic or antiferromagnetic interactions may set in at sufficiently low temperatures. This has been observed for example in olivine, ferroactinolite and biotite at T < 100 K. Also muscovite and phlogopite show an onset of ferromagnetic (s.l.) interactions, but at lower temperatures. This shows how the concentration of Fe, which is higher in biotite than in muscovite and phlogopite, can influence low-temperature magnetic properties that are being measured. The degree of AMS increases more strongly for biotite when measured at 77 K compared to room temperature than for muscovite. This makes it possible to selectively enhance the biotite fabric. Knowledge about single-crystal AMS was used in order to model magnetic anisotropy in deformed rocks consisting of minerals from the amphibole, pyroxene or olivine groups. The AMS that was calculated based on the mineral CPO and the single crystal susceptibility tensors matches well with measured magnetic anisotropy. The results presented in this study show that AMS depends dominantly on iron concentration, oxidation state of iron, and its location in the structure both in terms of site occupancy and distances between neighboring Fe atoms. This work allows for a better understanding of AMS in minerals and rocks and will assist in interpreting magnetic fabrics in geologic applications. 2

4 Zusammenfassung Die Anisotropie der magnetischen Suszeptibilität (AMS) dient oft als Indikator für das Gesteinsgefüge. Die AMS resultiert aus dem Zusammenspiel von anisotropen Einkristall-Eigenschaften und bevorzugter Mineralorientierung, die zum Beispiel während einer Verformung entsteht. Wenn ferromagnetische Mineralien, die in der Gesteinsmatrix oder als Einschlüsse in Silikaten vorkommen können, stark bevorzugt orientiert sind, kann dies dazu führen, dass deren Magnetisierungsrichtung von der Magnetfeldrichtung abweicht. Dadurch ist die mit paläomagnetischen Methoden bestimmte Magnetisierungsrichtung nicht immer parallel zur Paläo-Magnetfeldrichtung. Auch die induzierte Magnetisierung ist nicht zwingend parallel zum Erdmagnetfeld, was wichtig ist bei der Interpretation magnetischer Totalfeldanomalien. Um aus der AMS Informationen über das Gesteinsgefüge abzuleiten ist es wichtig, einerseits zu wissen welche Mineralien für die AMS verantwortlich sind, und ndererseits deren Einkristall-Anisotropien zu kennen. Unter dieser Voraussetzung können aus der magnetischen Anisotropie Rückschlüsse über magmatische Strömungen, sedimentäre Prozesse oder Gesteinsverformung gezogen werden. Das Ziel der vorliegenden Arbeit ist es, die AMS der gesteinsbildenden Mineralien Olivin, Pyroxen, Amphibol und Feldspat zu definieren. Dazu wurden die Orientierung der Hauptsuszeptibilitätsachsen, sowie der Grad und die Form der Anisotropie bestimmt. Zusätzlich wurde die Abhängigkeit der AMS von der Kristallstruktur und der chemischen Zusammensetzung erforscht. Zudem wurden die Schichtsilikate aus der Studie von Martín-Hernández and Hirt (2003) erneut untersucht, um die paramagnetische Suszeptibilität bei 77 K zu bestimmen. 35 Olivin-, 63 Pyroxen-, 29 Amphibol-, 33 Schichtsilikat- und 31 Feldspatkristalle wurden untersucht. Die Orientierung jedes Kristalls wurde aufgrund des Habitus und Laue-Röntgenstrahlmessungen bestimmt, und deren chemische Zusammensetzung mithilfe von Laserablation und Mikrosondenmessungen analysiert. Beide Methoden messen das Atomgewicht, und können deshalb den Oxidationszustand von Eisen oder die relativen Anteile von Fe 2+ zu Fe 3+ nicht direkt bestimmen. Da der Oxidationszustand von Eisen einen Einfluss auf die AMS haben kann, wurde das Fe 2+ /Fe 3+ - Verhältnis an ausgewählten Proben mithilfe von Mössbauer-Spektroskopie bestimmt. Einkristalle können ferromagnetische Einschlüsse aufweisen, die typischerweise entlang bestimmter Kristallebenen wachsen. Messungen zum Erwerb von isothermaler remanenter Magnetisierung wurden benutzt um die Art und Konzentration dieser Einschlüsse zu charakterisieren. Aufgrund ihrer hohen Suszeptibilität können selbst kleine Mengen ferromagnetischer Einschlüsse sowohl die gemessene Suszeptibilität als auch deren Anisotropie dominieren. Aus diesem Grund wurden Hochfeld-Torsionsmessungen durchgeführt, welche es ermöglichen, die diamagnetischen oder paramagnetischen Anteile der AMS von den ferrimagnetischen Anteilen zu separieren. Erstere werden den Silikaten zugeschrieben, während letztere von den ferromagnetischen Einschlüssen herrühren. Um die magnetischen Eigenschaften der gesteinsbildenden Mineralien noch besser zu verstehen, wurden die Hochfeld-Messungen bei 77 K wiederholt. Dies verstärkt die paramagnetische Suszeptibilität. Der Grad der AMS ist bei 77 K stärker als bei Raumtemperatur und erhöht sich für viele Mineralien in dieser Studie, und für Siderit, um einen Faktor 8. Einige Mineralien zeigen eine Veränderung der AMS-Form bei tieferer Messtemperatur. Der Grad der Erhöhung der Suszeptibilität mit abnehmender Temperatur ist abhängig von der Richtung des Magnetfelds relativ zum Kristallgitter. Diese Temperatur- und Richtungsabhängigkeit wurde anhand von Messungen der induzierten Magnetisierung als Funktion der Temperatur zwischen 300 K und 2 K weiter untersucht. 3

5 Die vorliegenden Ergebnisse zeigen, dass die Orientierung der paramagnetischen Hauptsuszeptibilitäten an die kristallographischen Achsen geknüpft ist. Die Orientierung der AMS hängt ab von der Kristallstruktur, der chemischen Zusammensetzung und davon, welche Gitterplätze von Eisenatomen belegt werden, und welchen Oxidationszustand diese haben. In Olivin ist die maximale Suszeptibilität generell parallel zur kristallographischen c-achse. Die Richtung der minimalen Suszeptibilität hängt bei Raumtemperatur vom Eisengehalt ab. Die Clinopyroxene Diopsid, Augit und Aegirin haben ihre mittlere Suszeptibilität parallel zur b-achse. Die maximale Suszeptibilität ist in Diopsid und Augit um 45 zur c-achse geneigt, während sie in Aegirin parallel zur c-achse orientiert ist. Im Orthopyroxen Enstatit ist die maximale Suszeptibilität parallel zu c, und die minimale parallel zu b. Viele Amphibole, z.b. Aktinolit, Ferroaktinolit und Hornblende haben ihre maximale Suszeptibilität parallel zur b-achse und die minimale parallel zu a*. Richterit verhält sich anders: Die mittlere Suszeptibilität ist parallel zu b, während die minimale und maximale in der a-c-ebene streuen. Die Schichtsilikate haben ihre minimale Suszeptibilität normal zu den T-O-T-Ebenen, und normalerweise keine Anisotropie innerhalb dieser Ebenen. Phlogopit kann jedoch auch innerhalb der Ebenen eine Anisotropie aufweisen. Feldspat besitzt eine schwache AMS, deren maximale Suszeptibilität nahe der c/c* Achse, und die minimale parallel zu b liegt. Der Grad der Anisotropie nimmt grundsätzlich in jeder Mineralgruppe mit der Eisenkonzentration zu. Zusätzlich spielt das Fe 2+ /Fe 3+ Verhältnis eine Rolle. Dies wird am eindrücklichsten in Clinopyroxenen beobachtet: Aegirin, der hauptsächlich Fe 3+ enthält, hat eine sehr schwache AMS verglichen mit Diopsid und Augit, die vor allem Fe 2+ enthalten. Bei genügend tiefen Temperaturen können lokale ferromagnetische oder antiferromagnetische Interaktionen auftreten. Dies wurde z.b. in Olivin, Ferroaktinolit und Biotit bei T < 100 K beobachtet. Auch in Muskovit und Phlogopit treten solche Interaktionen auf, allerdings erst bei tieferen Temperaturen. Dies zeigt, wie die Eisenkonzentration, die im Biotit höher ist als in Muskovit oder Phlogopit, die magnetischen Eigenschaften bei tiefen Temperaturen beeinflussen kann. Der Grad der AMS erhöht sich in Biotit stärker als in Muskovit, wenn bei 77 K gemessen wird statt bei Raumtemperatur. Dadurch ist es möglich, die durch Biotit erzeugte AMS gezielt zu verstärken. Die Resultate zur Einkristall-Anisotropie wurden benutzt, um die magnetische Anisotropie in Gesteinen zu modellieren. Dazu wurden Gesteine mit hohem Anteil an Mineralien aus der Amphibol-, Pyroxen- oder Olivingruppe verwendet. Die mithilfe kristallographisch bevorzugter Orientierung und Einkristall-Suszeptibilitätstensoren berechnete AMS stimmt gut überein mit der gemessenen Anisotropie. Die hier vorgestellten Ergebnisse zeigen, dass die magnetische Anisotropie von folgenden Faktoren beeinflusst wird: die Eisenkonzentration, der Oxidationszustand von Eisen und die Anordnung der Eisenatome in der Kristallstruktur. Bei Letzterem sind sowohl die Distanzen zwischen benachbarten Eisenatomen wichtig, als auch das Kristallfeld an einem bestimmten Gitterplatz. Diese Arbeit liefert die Basis für ein besseres Verständnis von magnetischer Anisotropie in Mineralien und Gesteinen und wird in Zukunft die Interpretation geologischer Prozesse aufgrund von AMS erleichtern. 4
