3 Abstract We consider dynamic concave utility functions. It is shown by Delbaen- Peng-Rosazza Gianin [21] that the penalty term of general dynamic concave utility functions can be represented by the conditional expectation of an integral with some suitable integrand f : [0, T ] Ω R d R + { }. The function f is convex and lower semi-continuous. We choose the integrand to be deterministic and independent of t. We then get a class of dynamic utility functions U. We investigate some properties of U and the most interesting one is that if f is super-quadratic, U is the unique bounded solution of a backward stochastic differential equation (BSDE) with generator g, the Fenchel-Legendre transform of f. We naturally move on to discuss the solvability of a BSDE with a bounded terminal value and a deterministic super-quadratic generator g, i.e., g(z) lim z + z =. 2 Different from the situation where g is at most quadratic, this BSDE is ill-posed. We first prove that given a super-quadratic generator, there exists a bounded terminal value such that the associated BSDE does not admit a bounded solution. On the other hand, we prove that if the superquadratic BSDE admits a bounded solution, then there exist infinitely many bounded solutions. We also prove that the important monotone stability property does not hold for this kind of BSDE. Finally, we prove the existence of bounded solutions for the Markovian v

4 BSDE. In the continuous case, i.e. when the terminal value Φ is bounded and continuous, the dynamic utility function is a bounded solution of the Markovian BSDE. Furthermore, we also give the link between the solutions of Markovian BSDEs and viscosity solutions of the corresponding partial differential equations. vi

5 Kurzfassung Wir betrachten dynamische konkave Nutzenfunktionen. Es wurde von Delbaen/Peng/Rosazza Gianin [21] gezeigt, dass man der Strafterm von allgemeinen dynamischen konkaven Nutzenfunktionen als die bedingte Erwartung eines Integrals mit einem geeigneten Integrand f : [0, T ] Ω R d R + { } darstellen kann. Die Funktion f ist konvex und unterhalbstetig. Wir wählen den Integrand so, dass er deterministisch und unabhängig von t ist. Wir bekommen dann eine Klasse von dynamischen Nutzenfunktionen U. Wir untersuchen einige Eigenschaften von U, und die interessanteste ist die folgende: wenn f super-quadratisch ist, dann ist U die einzige beschränkte Lösung einer Rückwärts-Stochastischen- Differentialgleichung (Backward Stochastic Differential Equation, BSDE) mit Erzeuger g, wobei g die Fenchel-Legendre-Transformation von f ist. Wir setzen dann fort mit der Diskussion der Lösbarkeit einer BSDE mit beschränktem Endwert und deterministischem super-quadratischem Erzeuger g, d.h. g(z) lim z + z =. 2 Im Gegensatz zu der Situation, wo g sub-quadratisch ist, ist diese BSDE schlecht formuliert. Erstens zeigen wir, dass es für jeden super-quadratischen Erzeuger ein beschränkter Endwert existiert, so dass die assozierte BSDE keine beschränkte Lösung besitzt. Andererseits beweisen wir dass, wenn die superquadratische BSDE eine beschränkte Lösung zulässt, es unendlich viele beschränkte Lösungen existiert. Wir zeigen auch, vii

6 dass die wichtige Eigenschaft der monotone Stabilität für diese Klasse von BSDEs nicht gilt. Schlussendlich beweisen wir die Existenz von beschränkten Lösungen für die Markoffsche BSDE. Im stetigen Fall, d.h. wenn der Endwert beschränkt und stetig ist, ist die dynamische Nutzenfunktion eine beschränkte Lösung der Markoffschen BSDE. Ausserdem geben wir die Verbindung zwischen Lösungen von Markoffschen BSDEs und Viskositätslösungen der entsprechenden partiellen Differentialgleichungen. viii
