1 Accusative Prepositions Up to now, we ve been using the accusative case only for direct objects. There is another part of speech that requires the accusative case in German: the accusative prepositions. They are: durch... through für... for gegen... against (with time: about ) ohne... without um... around (with time: at ) When you use any of these prepositions, you need to put the noun or pronoun following them into the accusative case. For example: Ich kaufe ein Buch für meinen Vater. Wir gehen ohne dich. Ich laufe durch das Haus. I m buying a book for my father. We re going without you. I m running through the house. In casual German, you may see contractions when using prepositions with das : fürs = für das durchs = durch das ums = um das These are common but very informal, so we d prefer that you write out the full für das in your work.
2 durch für gegen ohne um through for against without around about at A. Use the cues below to write sentences with prepositional phrases. BEISPIEL: Elke geht (durch / das Haus). Elke geht durch das Haus. 1. Hier ist ein Brief. (für / dein Bruder) 2. Frau Bauer kommt. (durch / die Tür) 3. Ich laufe. (durch / der Park) 4. gehe ich nicht spazieren. (ohne / mein Freund) 5. Er geht. (um / das Haus) 6. Martin hat nichts. (gegen / wir) 7. Arbeitest du? (für / er) 8. Ihr geht wirklich? (ohne / ich) 9. Udo hat eine Karte. (für / du) 10. Ich gehe nicht zur Uni. (ohne / mein Pullover)
3 B. Supply the appropriate prepositions and personal pronouns from the list below. durch für gegen ohne mich dich sie ihn Sie 1. Ich kann nicht leben, Sabine! 2. Meine Eltern mögen meinen Freund nicht. Ich weiß nicht, was sie haben. 3. Ich mache das sehr gern, Frau Meyer. 4. Martin sagt, er kann nicht kommen. Wir sollen schwimmen gehen. 5. 6. Peter, hier ist ein Brief. 7. Marias Vater hat viel Geld. Er kauft ein neues Auto. 8. Was hältst du von Paul? -- Ich habe nichts ; er ist nett.
4 C. Write the appropriate preposition in the blank, and add endings as needed to the articles.
