5 PREFACE The book series Art and Architecture in Discussion was initiated at a time when there was little to no dialogue between artists and architects. Today the situation is quite different. Disciplines and media are merging more and more: artists design buildings and furniture, designers and musicians venture out into the art world, architects collaborate with artists. These exchanges and expansions raise many questions. How do you become what you are? Do you have to decide once and for all? How important is mastery today? Can experiences be transported into other media? What are the pros and cons of working in various media and disciplines? What idiom do you use to describe your practice -- and what idioms do others find for it? Als wir Mitte der 1990er Jahre mit der Buchreihe Kunst und Architektur im Gespräch anfingen, war der Dialog zwischen Künstlern und Architekten noch die Ausnahme. Heute jedoch sieht die Situation ganz anders aus. Die Disziplinen verbinden sich mehr und mehr: Künstler bauen Häuser und entwerfen Möbel, Designer und Musiker machen Kunst, Architekten und Künstler arbeiten oft gemeinsam an Projekten. Dieser Austausch und die Expansion in andere Disziplinen werfen viele Fragen auf. Wie wird man, was man wird? Muss man sich endgültig entscheiden? Wie wichtig ist ein Begriff wie Meisterschaft? Können Erfahrungen und Kenntnisse in eine andere Disziplin übertragen werden? Was sind die Vor- und Nachteile des Arbeitens in verschiedenen Gebieten? Welche Sprache findet man für seine Tätigkeit? 6

6 In a conversation that focuses on multidisciplinarity, Hedi Slimane is an ideal participant. His practice might almost be called kaleidoscopic. He has become widely recognized as designer for Yves Saint Laurent and later for Dior Homme. His vision has hugely influenced and transformed our idea of menswear. He is also deeply interested in photography as reflected in publications on youth subculture in Berlin and London. As an artist, photography is in fact one of his preferred mediums. In addition, he has curated exhibitions and designed minimalist furniture. Thomas Demand is renowned for his large photoworks, in which he reflects, analyses and tests our perception of reality and media phenomena. In his intricate approach, he appropriates media images and transforms them into meticulously built architecture, destroying that very architecture after the photograph has been taken. It takes a close look to realise that the visual reality of the images has been artificially created. As he puts it, Sculpture aims for permanence, for presence, while the photograph is destined to render something visible that occurred at a particular moment in front of the lens. Er ist seit jeher stark an der Fotografie interessiert und hat Fotobände über jugendliche Subkulturen in Berlin und London realisiert. Auch in seiner Kunst ist die Fotografie sein bevorzugtes Medium. Zudem hat Hedi Slimane Ausstellungen kuratiert und minimalistische Möbel entworfen. Thomas Demand ist bekannt für seine grossformatigen Fotoarbeiten. Er benutzt Medienbilder, die er in detailreichen lebensgrossen Modellen nachbaut und wiederum fotografiert. Nur wenn man sehr genau hinblickt, sieht man, dass die visuelle Realität der Bilder eine künstlich erzeugte ist. So entsteht eine visuelle Irritation mit der er unsere Erfahrung von Realität und Medienbildern befragt. «Skulptur», sagt Demand, «strebt nach Dauer, nach Präsenz, während die Fotografie das zeigt, was sich an einem bestimmten Augenblick vor der Linse befand. 7

7 complications that have to do with the concept of time. 1 Time is also an important factor in Demand s videos. Equally central to his work are questions of place, display and architecture. For his exhibitions he has collaborated with architects like Caruso St John and has created wallpaper both for his own shows and for museums. It was Thomas Demand, who suggested including Peter Saville in the conversation. Saville is a founding partner of Factory Records in Manchester, and has created iconic covers for British bands like Joy Division and New Order. He has also created catalogues for such fashion designers as Yohji Yamamoto, Christian Dior and many others and is currently consultant creative director to Manchester city council. Zentral für seine Arbeiten sind aber auch Fragen nach Ort, Architektur und Display. In seinen Ausstellungen hat er mit Architekten wie Caruso St John zusammengearbeitet und hat Tapeten für Ausstellungen und Museen entworfen. Es war Thomas Demands Voschlag, Peter Saville zum Gespräch einzuladen. Saville ist Mitbegründer der Factory Records in Manchester und hat ikonische Plattencover für britische Bands wie Joy Division und New Order entworfen.
