Stefan Ebneth Hölscher Wasserbau GmbH Summary DSI-Infiltration is a new and patented technique to infiltrate any conveying water in groundwater aquifers. The capability of the technique allows to simultaneously reinfiltrate the whole amount of conveying water from dewatering for pipeline construction. So far the groundwater from dewatering campaigns gets lost in nearby surface water sinks like creeks, ponds etc. Since groundwater is the most important food for mankind it should be treated with care and should not be wasted due to construction. The management of Hölscher Wasserbau therefore decided to develop this unique technique in cooperation with the inventor. Within the last two years a lot of progress was made developing technique, machines and materials. The DSI - Infiltration technique proved its efficiency within several projects in the Netherlands and Germany such as Pipeline project Angerlo-Beuningen, with infiltration rates of nearly 100 %. 1. Introduction Condition for the Düsensauginfiltration (DSI ) is a flowing aquifer. In the aquifer, the flow is generated by the gravity associated with the cohesion of water molecules.

2 1. Introduction Condition for the Düsensauginfiltration (DSI ) is a flowing aquifer. In the aquifer, the flow is generated by the gravity associated with the cohesion of water molecules. These forces are used for DSI. The infiltration of water into the aquifer is generated through the nozzle, which creates a hydraulic barrier in the inflowing groundwater. The hydraulic barrier induces driving potential, sucking water from the DSI-Infiltrationwell. The Capacity of a DSI-Infiltration unit depends on the porosity of the aquifer and the depth of the infiltration. The capacity of a DSI-unit DN 50 ranges from 5 to 100 m 3 /h. 4 3. DSI-unit Glindow The DSI-unit Glindow is the ancestor of all DSI-infiltration-units. Its technique was developed gradually in recent years and has proven itself in the site work. It is modified according to the respective operating conditions and requirements. Before starting installation of any DSI-unit the infiltration depth ( infiltration-point ) has to be determined. Therefore an infiltration lance is pulled down with exact control of pressure and flow conditions leading to the specific infiltration profile of the aquifer. Based on this profile, the specific infiltration depth and capacity, including the corresponding nozzle is set. Picture 3: DSI-unit Glindow

In parts of the section water protection zones had to be crossed and therefor the authorities only permitted dewatering with accompanying 100 % reinfiltration of water. We installed 12 km of DSI System and reinfiltrated about 16 million m 3 water. 7 4. 2 DSI-Infiltration site Mining District Aachen, Germany The long term operation capability of infiltration-units Glindow has been proved within a groundwater protection program in the Aachen mining district in Germany, where several units are successfully operated since three years. In order to preserve the groundwater up to 1 million m 3 water from the ongoing dewatering of the opencast mining areas are reinfiltrated per year.
