1 Instructor: Dr. Emm Office: Capers 223B Office Hours: MW 1-2pm, 3:15-4:15pm, and by appt. Contact: ; Deutsch 202 Spring MWF 10-10:50am; MWF 11-11:50am, Capers 213 Required Texts: Hans Peter Richter, Damals war es Friedrich, dtv junior, a German/English-English/German Dictionary Recommended: 501 German Verbs Course Description and Goals: In the final German course required by the Citadel s core curriculum students demonstrate their proficiency in understanding, reading, speaking, and writing German, as well as their familiarity with the cultures of Germanspeaking countries by reading, discussing, and writing about an authentic German-language novel. Students will also view, discuss, and write about at least one full-length German or Austrian film on a related topic. In addition students will review selected grammar topics, learn new vocabulary, and study culture. Assignments include readings, written question sets, short written essays, brief oral presentations, and a book or film review. Upon successful completion of the course students will have the basic language and culture skills necessary to function in a German-speaking country and to qualify for upper-level German courses in The Citadel s German program. Scale: (%) A= B= C= D= F= 59-0 Assignments and Assessment % of grade Assignment: 20% Homework: Readings ( ) and worksheets ( ). For each class, a reading will be assigned in the text and a worksheet with comprehension questions and grammar activities will be posted in CitLearn. Worksheets are to be printed out, completed in German, and brought to class on the due date listed on the syllabus. They will be collected at least once week. When they are collected, they will count as a homework grade. On days when they are not collected, they count towards the participation grade. Homework is listed on the Semesterplan below, and is due on the date it is listed. Remember: Your success in foreign language learning depends heavily on the time spent studying and preparing outside of class. No late homework will be accepted, except in extraordinary circumstances and by arrangement with your Professor. (Forgetting, printer problems, guard duty, training exercises, etc, do not qualify as extraordinary circumstances.) When you know you will be absent, homework must be submitted in advance. 15% Mitarbeit (Participation): Successful language learning depends on active class participation. Class participation includes coming to class prepared (i.e. with the appropriate materials and having completed all homework), as well as checking and CitLearn for announcements and assignments. Your class participation grade will reflect your contributions during class (asking and answering questions, being prepared when called on, being a team player in group work and avoiding English) as well your conduct (being present and punctual, staying awake and focused in class, and not leaving the classroom during the 50-minute period.) 15% Tagesquiz (daily quiz): Expect a brief quiz almost every class on grammar and reading content. There are absolutely no make-up quizzes. Your three lowest quiz grades will be dropped. 20% Aufsätze (Papers): Four writing assignments, typed and double-spaced. Late papers lose a letter grade for each class period late. Your current Aufsatz is to be turned in stapled to the ones that have been returned (the graded version that I gave back to you). 15% Prüfungen (Tests): There will be two written tests during the semester. If you miss a test, you must schedule a make-up within 24 hours or you may receive a zero. Having a test count twice in lieu of a make-up test is not an option in this class! You must make up the test. Please remember that guard duty is not an excuse for missing a test. 1
2 5% Referat (Presentation): An in-class presentation in German towards the end of the semester that counts as the oral final for the course. 10% Abschlussprüfung (written final): Cumulative, on the date scheduled by the college. Final Exam Dates and Times*: 10am Section: 8am Thursday, April 30 th 11am Section: 1pm Saturday, May 2 nd *You may take the exam during either German 202 exam period, provided that you do not have another exam scheduled at that time. Your Professor is not permitted to reschedule final exams. Plan your end of semester travel accordingly. General Course Policies Attendance Attendance is mandatory. Official Citadel attendance policy will be followed: Students must provide documentation of an effort to reschedule guard duty when it conflicts with class, and tests shall not be missed due to guard duty. Furthermore, for any student, absences, whether excused or unexcused and in excess of 20% of the class meetings can, at the discretion of the professor, result in a grade of F in the course". Immersion in German No language other than German will be spoken during class time, unless the instructor explicitly allows a very rare English time out. The goal is to create a scenario of total immersion. Any questions in English should be posed after class or during office hours or via . Everyone is highly encouraged to questions to the instructor and to visit the instructor s office hours to ask questions and discuss concerns. Contact the instructor immediately if you don t understand new grammar topics, which will often be explained in German in class. Cell Phones and Electronic Devices Use of personal electronic devices is not permitted during class, except when called for by the professor. Such devices include cell phones (including camera phones and smart phones), blackberries, pagers, tablet PCs, mobile presenters, wireless tablets, digital recorders, beepers, palms, IPods, MP3 players, texting calculators, digital cameras, and laptops. (This policy does not extend to medically necessary assistive devices and to approved emergency communications). Texting or otherwise working with your electronic devices in class displays not only a visible lack of attention but also a lack of respect for your classmates, for your instructor, and for your learning environment, and therefore affects your participation grade. If you are experiencing a situation that requires you to be in constant electronic contact, you should not be in the classroom and should make other arrangements with the instructor. Course Policy on Dictionaries, Translations and Extra Help: Dictionaries: Use traditional or online dictionaries to help you understand unfamiliar words or phrases. Do not use them as a tool for translating. Do not look up every word when reading in German. When writing, use a dictionary to check gender and plurals of nouns, verb forms and spelling, but do not use it to translate your thoughts from English to German. When you must look up a crucial word, do not merely take the first German word listed. Make sure the word you choose is the right version of the word. For instance, when you look up paper, do you mean Aufsatz (a written assignment) or Papier (the material you write on). Double check the meaning of the German word you choose by looking it up in the other direction (German English). Translation Programs: Use of online translators, translation software, etc. is cheating and will not be tolerated. Tutoring and extra help: Your professor is available to help. You are also encouraged to seek out the German tutor at the Writing and Learning center. Consult with your professor before receiving help from anyone else. Cheating/Plagiarism: All work submitted must be your own. Use of language that is not your own is cheating and includes language produced by online translation programs, tutors, native speakers, etc. The Syllabus and Semesterplan are subject to change. 2
