January 2008 Invitation to the MIT Symposium on Large Scale Renewable Energy Utilization Witnessing a Paradigm Shift towards Sustainable Energy Supply? Dear Members and friends of the MIT Club of Germany, We are pleased to invite you to a key symposium and company visit under the umbrella of the MIT Alumni Organization. We will close in on this most current topic both via a discussion roundtable with high-profile representatives and via a tour of Q-Cells high-tech manufacturing plant in Thalheim/Bitterfeld. We start with an exiting visit to Q-Cells, a world leader in solar energy modules/panels on Saturday morning March 1 st. In the evening we offer a panel discussion with world-renowned participants from Politics, Research, Industry, and Utilities. Participants are: Dr. Ottmar Edenhofer, Dep. 3 Besuch des Europäischen Solar Valley in Thalheim Samstag, , 9:00 16:30 Am Vormittag des 1. März 2008 werden wir das Europäische Solar Valley in der Stadt Thalheim, Sachsen- Anhalt, besuchen, eine Region die sich in kürzester Zeit zu einem weltweiten Schwerpunkt der Photovoltaik- Branche entwickelt hat. Wir werden mit Q-Cells, dem größten unabhängigen und weltweit zweitgrößten Hersteller von Solarzellen, eines der faszinierenden deutschen Unternehmen besuchen. Entstanden aus kleinsten Anfängen (vor fünf Jahren hatte Q-Cells 12 Mitarbeiter, heute sind es ~1000 MA) ist Q-Cells innerhalb von nur fünf Jahren zu einem Benchmark der PV Branche geworden. Modernste Fertigungsanlagen, weltweit führende Forschung- und Entwicklungslabors, höchste Wachstumsraten hinsichtlich der Produktionskapazitäten, zahllose Preise und Ehrungen machen einen Besuch von Q-Cells und seiner Joint Ventures Ever-Q und CSG-Solar sowie der Tochter- Gesellschaften Solibro, Calyxo, Brilliant 234, sehr lohnend. Wird es eine fundamentale Änderung der Energieversorgung geben (müssen), die einem Paradigmenwechsel gleichkommt? b) Wenn ja, wie rasch wird das geschehen? Welche Rolle werden die Industrie und Technologie spielen? Ist etwa ein Zusammenspiel von Incumbents und New Entrants denkbar, oder wird ein jahrzehntelanger Kampf um Märkte und Menschen unvermeidbar sein?
