1 Focke Wulf Fw 200 C-4 CONDOR Bomber BY REVELL GmbH & Co. KG PRINTED IN GERMANY Focke Wulf Fw 200 C-4 CONDOR Bomber Die Focke-Wulf Fw 200 war dass erste moderne Langstreckenflugzeug der Welt. Sie entstand 1937 als viermotoriges Verkehrsflugzeug im Auftrag der deutschen Lufthansa und sollte auf Langstrecken, die bisher den langsameren Flugbooten vorbehalten waren, eingesetzt werden. Ihre Fähigkeiten bewies das neue Verkehrsflugzeug am 10. August 1938 auf seinem ersten Non-Stop-Flug von Berlin-Tempelhof nach Floyd- Bennet-Field, New York in 24 Stunden 36 Minuten und 12 Sekunden bei einer Durchschnittsgeschwindigkeit von km/h. Es war nicht nur ein neuer Rekordflug sondern auch eine bahn brechende Leistung für den Transatlantik-Flugverkehr. Solche Leistungen weckten schnell die Begehrlichkeiten der Militärs die ohnehin auf der Suche nach geeigneten Flugzeugen als Transporter und Langstreckenaufklärer waren. Die kaiserliche japanische Marine bestellte 1939 eine Aufklärerversion der Fw 200 die aber durch die politischen Ereignisse nicht mehr ausgeliefert wurde. Stattdessen bildeten diese Maschinen die Grundlage für das neu aufgestellte Kampfgeschwader 40 (KG 40). Gleichzeitig lief der Bau der militärischen Version Fw 200C-1, die sich besonders durch strukturelle Änderungen auf Grund gestiegener Abfluggewichte von den Vorgängermustern unterschied. Mit der Fw 200C-4 entstand schließlich 1942 die meistgebaute Fw 200. Sie wurde sowohl als Fernaufklärer wie auch als Bomber gegen Schiffsziele eingesetzt, Dazu konnten an Aufhängevorrichtungen unter den Motorgondeln und in der Bodenwanne konventionelle Bomben mitgeführt werden. Daneben war auch die Verwendung von Luft-Torpedos vorgesehen. Eine der wichtigsten Aufgaben der Fw 200 war das Aufspüren von Konvois und die Weitergabe der für einen Angriff nötigen Informationen an die deutschen U- Boote. Dazu wurde das Kampfgeschwader 40 dem Oberkommando der Kriegsmarine unterstellt und damit dem Führer der U-Boote, Admiral Dönitz und der Kommandostelle Fliegerführer Atlantic. Das KG 40 war in Bordeaux-Mérignac stationiert. Meist flogen die Maschinen allein bei Ihren Einsätzen, die nicht selten über 14 Stunden dauerten. Die Einsatzgebiete lagen dabei meist im Seegebiet zwischen zwischen Portugal und den Azoren.. Als Musterflugzeug fungierte eine C-3/U5 mit der im Sommer 1942 die Flugerprobung durchgeführt wurde. Im Gegensatz zum Vorgänger, der Fw 200C-3 verfügte die C-4 über eine stärkere Bewaffnung, wie etwa ein MG 151/20, Kaliber 20 mm, in einem Drehturm auf der Rumpfoberseite hinter dem Cockpit, sowie je ein MG 131 Kaliber 13 mm auf der Rumpfseite im hinteren Rumpfteil und in der Bodenwanne. Dazu kamen noch 3 MG 15, Kaliber 7,79 mm in der Bodenwanne (1) und in seitlichen Waffenständen. Als Bombenladung konnten sechs SC 250 Bomben (davon zwei in der Bodenwanne) oder zwei Torpedos mitgeführt werden. Von den insgesamt 107 gebauten Maschinen waren 94 vom Typ C-4. Von den Untertypen wurden sieben Maschinen des Typ C-4/U3 gebaut die mit dem Schiffsuchgerät Rostok ausgerüstet waren - äußerlich erkennbar an den filigranen Antennen an Bug und Tragflächen. Wenig später wurde diese Anlage durch das leistungsfähigere FuG 200 Hohentwiel ersetzt und auch in weiteren C-4 nachgerüstet. Die Ausrüstung zum Langstreckenkurierflugzeug war für zwei Maschinen geplant - die Fertigstellung ist allerdings fraglich. Vier Maschinen (zwei C-4/U1 und zwei /U2) wurden als Reiseflugzeuge für die Regierungsstaffel fertig gestellt. Ende 1943 wurde der Bau der Fw 200 durch das Jäger-Notprogramm gestoppt. Bis zu diesem Zeitpunkt waren insgesamt 273 Maschinen für zivile und militärische Einsätze gebaut worden. It originated in 1937 as a four engine transport aircraft under an order from the German Lufthansa, to be used on long distance routes that up until then had been the preserve of the flying boats. On 10th August 1938 the new commercial aircraft proved its ability during its first non-stop flight from Berlin Tempelhof to Floyd-Bennet-Field, New York in 24 hours 36 minutes and 12 seconds with an average speed of km/h (158 mph). It was not only a new record flight but also a ground-breaking performance for trans-atlantic commercial flights. Such performances quickly awoke the attention of the military who were looking for a suitable transport and long-distance reconnaissance aircraft anyway. In 1939 the Imperial Japanese Navy ordered a reconnaissance version of the Fw 200 which however was not delivered due to political manoeuvring. Instead, these aircraft formed the basis for the newly formed Kampfgeschwader 40 (Combat Wing 40). Construction of the military version the Fw 200C-1, which differed structurally from previous versions due to an increased maximum take-off weight ran concurrently. Finally 1942 saw the advent of the Fw 200C-4, the most prolific Fw 200. It was used equally well as a long range reconnaissance aircraft, and as a bomber against surface shipping. For this purpose, conventional bombs could be carried in cradles under the engine nacelles and in the ventral gondola. It was also intended to use aerial torpedoes. One of the most important roles of the Fw 200 was hunting out convoys and relaying information about them to the U-Boats in preparation for an attack. Additionally, Combat Wing 40 was put under command of the Naval High Command and therefore the commander of the U-Boat Fleet, Admiral Dönitz and his Command Post Commander Atlantic Aviation. KG 40 was stationed in Bordeaux-Merignac. The aircraft flew mostly alone during their missions which often lasted more than 14 hours. Their area of operations lay mostly in the area of ocean between Portugal and the Azores. A C-3/U5 was used as a trials aircraft on which flight testing was conducted during the summer of In contrast to its predecessor, the Fw 200C-3, the C-4 had a more powerful armament available, for instance 20mm calibre 151/20 machine guns mounted in a revolving turret on top of the rear fuselage behind the cockpit as well as 13mm calibre 131 machine guns mounted either side of the rear fuselage and in the ventral gondola. In addition it also had 3 x calibre 7.79 mm Mk15 machine guns were carried in the ventral gondola (1) and in the port and starboard weapons bays. Six SC250 bombs (of which two were in the ventral gondola) or two torpedoes could be carried as a bomb load. Out of a total of 107 aircraft built, 94 were C-4 s. From the sub-series, seven aircraft type C-4/U3 were built and fitted with the Rostock Ship Locating Equipment - externally distinguishable by the delicate antennae array on the nose and wings. A little later this equipment was replaced with the more powerful FuG 200 Hohentwiel which was also fitted to further C-4 s. An equipment fit for the Long Range Liaison role was planned for two aircraft, but their completion is in doubt. Four aircraft, (two C-4/U1 and two C-4/U2) were built as passenger aircraft for use by the Government VIP Squadron. Construction of the Fw 200 was stopped at the end of 1943 by the Emergency Fighter Programm, by which time a total of 273 aircraft had been built for both civil and military use.
