H. A. BARF et al; Participation restrictions of young adults with spina bifida; Disability and Rehabilitation, 2009; 31(11): 921 927 At the mean age of 21 years only 16% were living independently, more than one-third of the participants went to special secondary education, 53% of those who finished education did not have a regular job and 71% did not have a partner. Health condition variables (type of SB, hydrocephalus and level of lesion) and to a lesser extent activity limitations (wheelchair dependence and incontinence) were significant determinants for having participation restrictions. Perceived hindrances in participation included long-distance transportation (19 36%), accessibility (10 42%), physical impairments (22 40%), emotional barriers (20 32%) and financial limits (3 17%).
Brad. E. Dicianno: 21st Century Challenges to the Provision of Health Care to Adults With Spina Bifida: A Rehabilitation Approach; Archives of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation 2014;95:1601-2... we still have no clear medical home model for adults with disabilities such as spina bifida. Children with spina bifida often receive care in multidisciplinary clinics, many of which are affiliated with urban teaching hospitals...., only a subset provides care to adults. That leaves many young adults who transition out of a pediatric setting without adult-centered health care. Even in settings where pediatric specialists continue to provide care to adults, they must be equipped to handle issues that are unique to adults.
Brad. E. Dicianno: 21st Century Challenges to the Provision of Health Care to Adults With Spina Bifida: A Rehabilitation Approach; Archives of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation 2014;95:1601-2... About one third of hospitalizations of adults with spina bifida in the United States are due to conditions that could potentially be prevented with better outpatient care. Two of these conditions are urinary tract infection (UTIs) and skin wounds. Sepsis from UTIs and wound infections is responsible for the most in-hospital deaths....
PE Minchom: Impact off functional severity on self concept in young people with spina bifida; Archives of Disease in Childhood 1995; 73:48-52 This study examines the relationship between medical and functional severity of disability and levels of self esteem and selfconcept in 79 young people with spina bifida. Greater feelings of global selfworth and of self esteem in physical appearance were associated with greater severity of disability. This was only in part an effect of lower IQ among the most disabled young people. Many of the least disabled had marked impairment of self esteem.
