About the reinvention of the management of innovation Dr. Ralf Kopp Challenge Social Innovation (19. 21. September 2011, Wien)

What comes to your mind, thinking of great inventions or innovations? electric light automobile television internet
the invention of management Management is one of the most important inventions/innovations! Management is a social invention/innovation! focuses on how to bring people together, mobilize and organize ressources, motivate, reward, allocate, interact, communicate
new challenges hyper-competition pace of knowledge creation intensity of knowledge need for fast learning demand for internal/external participation
reinvention of (innovation) management how to build a company: flexible adaptive absorptive ready for extended collaboration based on new approaches of innovation?
How do you turn human beings in semi programmable robots to do things again and again? How can everybody in a company contribute to create inspired and innovative products? How can we get over constraints of limited knowledge in organization?
the integro project www.innovationsarbeit.de identifying/describing advanced approaches of innovation management developing integrated models and tools SMEs/high-tech/knowledge intensiv sector IT software development/mechatronic (findings available only in German language)
finding 1 cristallisation of new principles of innovation open innovation
from closed to open innovation ideation evaluation realisation closed innovation focus internal know how external know how not welcome not-invented-here syndrome external information only about needs open innovation focus external know how external information how to solve problems (Phase 1 3)
two approaches of open innovation closed approach (technology driven) Origin, development and diffusion based on Social Software in web 2.0 Competition of innovation; innovation market places; innovation communities; innovation toolkits; specific innovation technologies. (Möslein/ Neyer 2009, p. 93 /Translation Ralf Kopp) wide approach (socially driven) based on all forms of communication, interaction and cooperation between actors of enterprises and external actors. the degree of using web 2.0 is not a valid criterion. Open innovation could work completely without the support of social software! (But mostly is supported by social software.)
finding 2 emergence of a new type of enterprise enterprise 2.0
enterprise 2.0 www.shortview.de/group/images/detail/69805/107260 The core of enterprise 2.0 is open innovation (wide approach)! Enterprise 2.0 is not characterised by the degree of using web 2.0! Mature enterprises 2.0 are hard to find!
Enterprise 2.0 is the art of liberation! openness absorptivity/connectivity fast learning (re)flexibility decentralisation participation SchmetterlingHand360124_R_by_Monika-Tugcu_pixelio.de self-organisation
No classic control! No classic hierarchy! No strict requirements how to do the work! No limits of communication/interaction! www.istockphoto.com/cublicle Prison.jpg
enterprise 2.0 as a social innovation system Enterprise 2.0 is not characterised by the degree of using web 2.0! The integro project found many crucial non-technological elements, e.g. customer feed back open space peer group time new form of project management (scrum) fostering self organisation cooperation with universities
enterprise 2.0 as digital innovation system Enterprises 2.0 are more or less supported and dynamised by web 2.0! e.g. blogs, wikis, clouds, dashborads, thumb up/down, expansion of range/intensity of feed back > participation > collaboration high adaptability to needs of users > more freedom of communication and interaction digital architecture and functionality are specified or modified by actors (in combination with non-digital elements) even the digital design is a result of social negotiations!
enterprise 2.0 as socio-digital innovation system transmedia and transmethodical dynamic frame for self-organized actions along the innovation process. combination of non-digital and digital forms of communication. integration of external feed back/knowledge into internal processes (ideation, evaluation, realisation) enabling the flow of knowledge: outside in inside out coupled stimulation of self-organisation/self-control connected with organisation/ control combination network (openness) and hierarchy (closedness)
conclusion: enterprises 2.0 are like chameleons! able to light up different colours in dependence from environment every part is highly interactive permanent invention/modification of design ability to switch between different principles
management of opposing logics of action enterprise 1.0 enterprise 2.0 industrial society industrial worker socio-technical system artefacts stability/certainty hierarchy/control centralisation instruction/command targets/mbo optimisation/closed inno. leadership knowledge society knowledge worker socio-digital system services/hybrids uncertainty/instability network/self-control decentralisation self-organisation/free space culture/values creation/open innovation communityship
interplay of elements in a socio-digital innovation system (example) ideas (stimulation) evaluation (focus) realisation (relevance) open space chit chat peer groups opportunity assessment functional board executive board scrum peer group time decision making development implementation network openness hierarchy closedness collaboration
final thoughts We are in the early stage of a very long innovation of organizational design ( ). The traditional, hierarchically based 20th-century model is not effective at organizing the thinking-intensive work of self-directed people ( ). We need ( ) a model that uses hierarchical decision making only for activities that need that authority ( ) but at the same time enables self-directed professionals to collaborate with their peers continuously. (Lowell Bryan http://www.interknowledgetech.com/innovative%20management.pdf) Enterprise 2.0 is about people! Enterprise 2.0 is a social innovation!
