6 Sensorsysteme - Schlüssel zum Katastrophenmanagement In einem Jahr mit verheerenden Naturkatastrophen, wie Erdrutschen in China, Erdbeben u.a. auf Haiti, in Japan mit daraus folgenden menschlichen, technischen und sozialen Katastrophen, Flugzeugabstürzen, etc., nimmt die Frage nach der Beobachtbarkeit der Umwelt, der Voraussage ihres Verhaltens und der Kontrollierbarkeit und Nachsorge von und nach Katastrophen immer breiteren Raum in der öffentlichen Wahrnehmung und - daraus folgend - in den Köpfen der politischen Entscheidungsträger ein. So unmöglich die Vermeidung echter Naturkatastrophen erscheint, ergibt sich aber umso dringender der Aspekt der Vorsorge durch rechtzeitige Voraussage und der Vermeidung, oder Abmilderung weitreichender Folgen durch Nachsorge und optimiertes Katastrophenmanagement. Sensoren und Sensorsysteme nehmen hier, mehr denn je, die alles entscheidende Schlüsselrolle ein: zunächst zur gezielten Erfassung realer Messdaten, die für das Verständnis und die präzise Modellbildung der interagierenden Wirkmechanismen benötigt werden, - und, darauf basierend, im operationellen System die Beobachtung und Voraussage ermöglichen. Sie erfassen damit Kenn- oder Messgrößen zur Steuerung, Regelung oder Kontrolle von technischen, ökonomischen oder ökologischen Systemen und ermöglichen damit nicht nur Fortschritt, Qualität und Komfort, sondern sorgen für die als immer wichtiger wahrgenommene Sicherheit. Damit haben die auf dieser Sensorik beruhenden Begriffe von Exploration, Ortung und Navigation zur Informationsgewinnung und Überwachung von immer komplexer werdenden technischen, ökonomischen und ökologischen Systemen in der heutigen Gesellschaft an Bedeutung gewonnen, die vor wenigen Jahren kaum denkbar erschien.

7 Vor diesem Hintergrund und in diesem Spannungsfeld geben wir mit diesem Bericht einen Überblick über unsere technisch wissenschaftliche Arbeit aus den Bereichen der Sicherheitstechnik, der optischen Technologien mit Lasermeßtechnik und Bildverarbeitung, der Terahertz-Sensorik und des Remote Sensings: 51 Projekte wurden von 57 wissenschaftlichen Mitarbeitern und Stipendiaten in 12 Arbeitsgruppen im vergangenen Jahr in unserem Institut bearbeitet. Wir berichten über die Personal- und Haushaltssituation und über unsere wichtigsten Aktivitäten, Publikationen und Öffentlichkeitsarbeit im Jahr Unsere Vorstandsmitglieder geben durch kurze Berichte einen Einblick in innovative Projekte. Auch in der Zukunft möchten wir die wesentliche Ordination nicht aus den Augen verlieren. Die interdisziplinäre Arbeit im Bereich der Sensorik, die theoretische Entwicklung von Ansätzen und Konzepten, die Nutzbarmachung neuer mathematischer Theorien sowie deren praktische Umsetzung im Team sind die Grundlage unserer Arbeit. Wissenschaftliche Nachwuchsarbeit durch die Förderung junger Talente, der Ausbau von Kooperationen und der damit verbunden Erkenntnis - und Expertisengewinn sind nicht nur abstrakte Ziele, sondern notwendige Schritte zur Verstetigung unseres Weges. Wie auf jedem anderen Weg, so auch auf diesem, gibt es schmerzliche Verluste zu beklagen. Wir bedauern den Tod unseres langjährigen, wissenschaftlich und menschlich gleichermaßen geschätzten Vorstandskollegen und ZESS Senior Members, Prof. Düchting, der nach langer heimtückischer Krankheit im Dezember 2010 von uns gerufen wurde. Wissenschaft formt, aber benötigt auch Persönlichkeiten. Der Verlust solcher Persönlichkeiten macht das Leben ärmer, wird uns in allem Gedenken aber Ansporn für unsere zukünftige Arbeit sein. 9 Das Zentrum für Sensorsysteme wurde 1989 im Rahmen der Zukunftsinitiative Montanregionen (ZIM) der Landesregierung als größtes ZIM-Einzelprojekt der Region Siegen in Form einer zentralen wissenschaftlichen Einrichtung der Universität Siegen gegründet. durch die Qualifizierung des wissenschaftlichen Nachwuchses sollte die Einführung neuer Technologien unterstützt werden, die Wettbewerbsfähigkeit der Industrie gestärkt sowie der regionale Strukturwandel gefördert werden. Die interdisziplinäre Zusammenarbeit von Professoren, Wissenschaftlern und Forschern der Fachbereiche Elektrotechnik, Maschinenbau, Physik und Chemie und die Verbindung von Wissen, fachlicher Kompetenz und individuellen Fähigkeiten sollte eine neue Forschungskultur, Innovation und Verbesserung von technischen Entwicklungen und Produkten auf dem Gebiet der Sensorik und Sensorsysteme hervorbringen. Durch Beratung, Durchführung gemeinsamer Forschungs- und Entwicklungsvorhaben mit kleinen und mittelständischen Unternehmen (KMUs) der Region, aber auch Zwei Beiräte, ein industrieller Beirat sowie ein wissenschaftlicher Beirat, begleiten das ZESS seit 1993 und beraten und unterstützen den Vorstand hinsichtlich der strategischen und wissenschaftlichen Ausrichtung der Arbeit. Als Element der Verstetigung und zur Sicherung der angesammelten Expertise dient das Gremium der ZESS Senior Members, in dem emeritierte oder pensionierte ZESS Vorstandsmitglieder nicht nur beratend tätig sind, sondern ihre wissenschaftliche Arbeit fortsetzen können. 9

19 International Postgraduate Programme MOSES NRW Research School on Multi Modal Sensor Systems for Environmental Exploration and Safety Our planet Earth is a system with multiple feedbacks. Environment and development challenges are thouroughly mixed with each other and social and economic sectors with environmental issues in various ways. Against this background, monitoring and safeguarding the state of our planet is one of the key challenges of our century. The NRW Research School on Multi Modal Sensor Systems for Environmental Exploration and Safety (MOSES) addresses the ever more significant problem of scientifically and technologically exploring and monitoring unknown or changing environments to provide scientists with deeper insights into and a better understanding of the System Earth and to provide politicians and decision-makers with sophisticated information. By definition and by virtue of the research area, MOSES constitutes an interdisciplinary, cross-department structure for Early Stage Researchers (doctoral students) with a background in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry. MOSES offers research opportunities in all aspects of sensors, multi modal sensor systems, data processing, mining and fusion, simulation and optimization with applications in practically any scientific and technical field. High level interdisciplinary research not only requires individual high potential research abilities, motivation, excellent scientific support and supervision, it also requires embedding in international scientific communities, collaboration and complementary skills, facilitating scientific exchange. MOSES also provides all kinds of support and training in this respect. Furthermore, MOSES provides networking facilities in the form of participation in largescale national and international research projects: seeking an optimal combination of doctoral training, scientific research and meeting the needs of industry, MOSES is a joint initiative of: 19

20 ZESS (Center for Sensor Systems, University of Siegen), Fraunhofer Research Institute for High Frequency Physics and Radar Techniques (FHR), Fraunhofer Research Institute for Communication, Information Processing & Ergonomics (FKIE). This network is augmented by a large consortium of industrial companies from all over Europe which cooperate with the Research School. Being active at the heart of developments which address one of the key challenges of the century while at the same time being involved with very advanced and extremely sophisticated sensing and information mining infrastructure not only gives highest moral satisfaction, it clearly also ensures excellent career perspectives for the participants in the programme. The Ministry of Innovation, Science, Research and Technology of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia fully supports this concept. MOSES is one of 17 new statefunded Research Schools that are being established in North Rhine-Westphalia. MOSES features a number of structured curricular doctoral training and research programmes, individually different with respect to research focus, selection criteria and funding mechanisms: 1.) 21 International Postgraduate Programme GRK 1564 The focal idea of the Research Training Group is to seize recent developments in imaging for different modalities in order to facilitate innovative approaches to the field of civil security applications. The focused civil security scenarios include person detection and biometry, material detection and analysis, as well as scene observation. The targeted enhancements of civil security systems addresses further functionalities and increased robustness which can be achieved due to the particular orthogonality and redundancy of the information delivered by the individual sensor modalities. Sensor data processing is the focal point for the Research Training Group, bringing together the potentials of the new sensor technologies and the specific needs of the targeted civil security application. Within this scope, different data processing and information extraction concepts will be comprehensively investigated. The Research Training Group addresses new sensor concepts, especially distance range sensors based on Photonic Mixing Device (PMD) technology, enhanced THz-sensors and multi-spectral VIS-sensors (colorimetric arrays). 21

22 Stipendien Förderung durch Stipendien Promotionsprogramme und Stipendien für Studenten In einer Feierstunde hat Rektor Professor Dr. Holger Burckhart am 14. Dezember Stipendien an Studierende überreicht. Im Jahr 2010 wurden insgesamt 43 Promovierende durch ein DAAD-Promotionsstipendium, durch MOSES oder durch ein Hochschul- bzw. ZESS-Stipendium gefördert. Seit 2009 beteiligt sich das ZESS am Studienförderfond Siegen e.v. der Universität. Sein Hauptziel besteht nicht nur darin, geeignete Studierende bzw. Studieninteressierte zu unterstützen, sondern auch Stipendiaten und Förderer eng zu vernetzen. Das ZESS unterstützt momentan vier qualifizierte Studierende der technisch naturwissenschaftlichen Masterstudiengänge mit 300 /Monat für mindestens 1 Jahr, wobei die Hälfte dieses Betrages durch das MIWFT refinanziert wird: Büthe, Inka Meckel, Simon Julius Büdenbender, Michael Heinz, Achim Alexander 22

25 Forschungsprojekte Recent Research Projects Die Bearbeitung von praxisorientierten Projekten bestimmt den Hauptteil der wissenschaftlichen Arbeiten im ZESS. Auf den folgenden Seiten präsentieren wir deshalb einige ausgesuchte Projekte aus der Menge der aktuellen Forschungsvorhaben. Wie allgemein in unseren internationalen Promotionsstudiengängen üblich, sind die Berichte in englischer Sprache verfasst. The main part of our scientific work consists of projects with a practice oriented approach. On the following pages we present a selection of current research projects. Most of them are processed by research associates or participants of one of our international postgraduate programs. The list involves topics like environmental monitoring, optical inspection systems or navigation solutions. 25

26 Recent Research HiPRwind High Power, High Reliability Offshore Wind Technology During the last 20 years, the research group led by Prof. Fritzen has been dealing intensively with the development and application of methods for damage diagnosis and structural health monitoring (SHM) of mechanical, aeronautical and civil engineering structures. Based on the experience gained in the last five years in monitoring of Offshore Wind Energy Plants (OWEP) in a national collaborative research project (IMO-WIND), the research group was invited to participate in a new innovative project regarding OWEP: High Power, high Reliability offshore wind technology (HiPRwind) starting in the year 2010 HiPRwind is an FP7 EU project introducing a new crosssectoral approach to the development of very large offshore wind turbines. Focused on floating systems, this 5-year pan-european R&D effort will develop and test new solutions for enabling offshore wind technologies at an industrial scale. The project is designed with an open architecture, shared access approach in that the consortium of 19 partners will work together in a collaborative way, to develop enabling structural and component technology solutions for very large wind power installations in medium to deep waters. A central outcome of HiPRwind is to deliver a fully functional floating wind turbine deployed at real sea conditions. This research & testing facility will be used to research new solutions and generate field data. The project will address critical issues of offshore wind technology such as the need for extreme reliability, remote maintenance and grid integration with particular emphasis on floating wind turbines. Innovative engineering methods will be applied to selected key development challenges such as rotor blade designs, structural health monitoring systems, reliable power electronics and control systems. Built-in active control features will reduce the dynamic loads on the floater in order to save weight and cost compared to existing designs. Furthermore HiPRWind will develop and test novel, cost effective approaches to floating offshore wind turbines at a lower 1-MW scale. In the context of this project, the task of the Univ. of Siegen is to develop algorithms to monitor the vibrations and the acting wind forces on the rotating blades. The information about the loads and vibrations will be used for design and maintenance purposes of the plant. 26

28 Recent Research Automated Optical Inspection for Processing Defects on Agricultural Goods at the Example of the Potato Processing The quality of the final products is crucial in industrial processing of agricultural product (indicating mainly food). In order to avoid health risk to consumers without however big influences to productivity, agricultural products are always required to be automatic optical inspected before coming to the end products. An automatic optical inspection system ensures a consistent quality and appearance of products. Nowadays, automatic optical inspection systems are able to sort out whole, defective objects. These objects are disposed or further processed into low-quality products. To classify processed product into high-quality products, is either a considerable expense of economy, processing time or it is not feasible in technique. The specific challenges to automatic optical inspection of industrially processed foods are: the high volumes, the production environment in relation to Hygiene, climate, etc., the natural variations in shape, color and quality of agricultural products. The natural variation can be caused by storage, transport or process-related buffering time. Even such agricultural products are lost by the sorting out of whole objects that can be recovered by postprocessing. The avoidance of this waste of the used products provides a large savings potential for the food processing industry. An automatic post-processing optimizes the efficient use of agricultural products in industrial production. The rejected products can be at least partially processed to high-quality end products through a targeted cutting off the defects. Sensors, control and processing are combined for a specific processing of defective agricultural products. A secure, robust and fast solution must be found for all three technologies for industrial applications. The analysis of image information of the optical sensor will be configurable to react to the natural variability of the product. An appropriate processing strategy and method is selected in the process based on the results of this evaluation. The most efficient use of the products should be allowed depending on the input quality through a quick or precise processing process in addition to the specific conditions. 28

30 Recent Research Long-range Scene Analysis with Time-of-Flight Cameras Object recognition and tracking are the main tasks in computer vision applications such as safety, surveillance, human-robot-interaction, driving assistance system, traffic monitoring, remote surgery, medical reasoning and many more. In all these applications the aim is to bring the visual perception capabilities of the human being into the machines and computers. To open new horizons in computer vision people start using both 2D and 3D visual aspects of a scene. While the 2D visual aspect represents some data about the color or intensity of the objects, the 3D denotes some information about the position of the object surfaces. By fusing these two different modalities in computer vision application a more efficient comprehension of our three-dimensional colorful world is possible. Nowadays, the 3D vision systems based on Time of Flight (TOF) have become very attractive. A combination of a TOF-sensor with a CMOS chip in a monocular setup (MultiCam) has recently been developed at the Center for Sensor Systems (ZESS). It provides high resolution intensity and color data together with range information thus overcoming the main limitations of currently available TOF-systems. It has been shown that it can be used very efficiently for real time gesture recognition and detection and tracking of moving persons and objects. One limitation still remains: the restricted range the TOF-sensor. The reason for this is the low intensity of the active illumination (near infrared) which has to be modulated at approximately 20 MHz. Cooling problems and the radiation characteristic of commercial available LEDs limit the conventional area of operation typically to only several meters. Within the project LaotSe (Flughafen Start-und Landebahnüberwachung durch multimodale, vernetzte Sensorik, Hightech.NRW) we succeeded to extend the usual range of TOF-sensors. For this we use 6-fold lighting modules with 3.5 W optical output power and with a spectral emission at 850 nm. To optimize the beam forming of the illumination we place the infrared LEDs in the focal point of a parabolic reflector thus transforming the spherical into a nearly parallel (opening angle 2 degrees) radiation characteristic. With a set of four lightings we achieve depth images of up to 200 meters. 30

32 Recent Research Simulation of Ultrasonic Wave Propagation Phenomena for the Optimal Design of Multi-Sensoric Monitoring Systems Maintenance costs have a big share of the total life cycle cost of a modern aircraft in addition to manufacturing and fuel cost. In this context, structure-healthmonitoring systems (SHM-systems) have been integrated into aircrafts to detect early damage and to monitor efficiently the health of the structure. These systems can reduce the maintenance time and costs by increasing the inspection intervals and can also contribute to an even higher safety level. Moreover, a carefully controlled structure can lead to an increased implementation of modern light weight concepts, making a lighter design of aircrafts possible. A reduction in weight of the aircraft is directly related to lower fuel consumption. Therefore, modern SHM-systems contribute to reduction of CO 2 emissions. Within recent years, several approaches utilizing ultrasonic waves have been developed. In case of thinwalled structures, guided waves that are excited and sensed by surface-bonded or integrated piezoelectric elements (PZTs) have shown a high potential. Permanently installed PZTs enable a continuous monitoring. To setup an optimal SHM-system many parameters have to be selected. Especially, the position and shape of the actuators and sensors, excitation signals, the signal analysis method, the localization method and so on are one of the factors which have to be determined in many costs and time consuming experiments. In cooperation with (EADS), an efficient numerical method for modeling of wave propagation processes in thin-walled shell structures based on so-called spectral element is developed. Here, the electro-mechanical coupling of piezoelectric sensors and actuators is taken into. On the one hand, the simulation tool helps to understand the complex wave propagation and scattering phenomena. On the other hand, the simulation tool supports the design process of SHM-systems according to the optimal sensor configuration and distribution, the excitation signals and the optimal signal analysis method to setup an optimal multi-sensoric monitoring system. 32
