2 SUMMARY Selenium (Se) is a chemical element which is found in trace amounts at Earth s surface. Despite its low abundance, Se plays a vital role in the health of humans and other animals, and as such is considered a micronutrient trace element. As a micronutrient, humans and other animals must consume a certain amount of Se to be healthy. However, the optimal intake range of Se is quite narrow, ranging between about 50 and 450 µg Se per day and deficient in-take levels can be a co-factor in a range of chronic diseases. Humans take in Se either by consuming meats and fish however the main pathway of Se to humans is via plants and plant based products. Plant uptake of selenium is controlled by the bioavailability of Se in soils which in turn is a function of both the speciation and concentration of Se within the soils in which plants are grown. Globally, the distribution of soil Se concentrations is very heterogeneous, with large regions of the world having soils with very low Se concentrations and relatively few regions having soils with high Se concentrations. Soil Se concentrations generally have been thought to be controlled by rock weathering, and indeed the occurrence of soils with high Se concentrations is often related to the weathering of carbonaceous sedimentary rock types (e.g. shales) which are rich in Se. High soil Se concentrations from rock weathering generally occur in localized hot spots, and large scale patterns of soil Se distribution are not well explained by geogenic sources alone. Therefore, in the absence of these Se rich rock types other sources of Se may be important determinants of soil Se concentrations. In searching for an additional source of Se to soils it is useful to examine the fluxes of Se within the global biogeochemical Se cycle. In doing so, it becomes apparent that large amounts of Se are cycled through the atmosphere annually, and therefore atmospheric deposition may be a likely candidate as a source of Se to soils. Wet deposition accounts for 80% of the annual atmospheric deposition of Se, and it is possible that precipitation is a delivery mechanism of Se to soils. In general, precipitation can be thought of as a sink process which removes Se from the atmosphere, although atmospheric Se is ultimately derived from atmospheric source emissions. Atmospheric mass balance calculations indicate that natural sources of atmospheric Se are dominant. Of these natural sources, marine biogenic emissions of volatile methylated Se species (primarily dimethyl selenide [DMS] and dimethyl diselenide [DMDSe]) are estimated to be the most important. Therefore, it is iii

3 iv possible that the atmospheric wet deposition of Se derived from marine biogenic emissions is an important source of Se to soils. However, until now this possibility has yet to be directly investigated and in general there is a dearth of quantitative evidence establishing the role of atmospheric wet deposition in determining the concentration of Se in the terrestrial environment. The two primary aims of this thesis are to: 1) examine the effect that precipitation has on controlling the concentration of Se in terrestrial sediments and soils and 2) to examine the possible role that marine biological productivity plays in determining the amount of Se that is delivered to the terrestrial environment. The chapters of this thesis comprise work that addresses these two goals by examining the atmospheric deposition of Se at various locations on Earth within the geologic past and in the present. In the first part of this thesis (Chapter 2), a 6.8 million year (Ma) long record of atmospheric Se deposition from the Lingtai loess section of the Chinese Loess Plateau (CLP) is related to fluctuations in the amount of precipitation falling on the CLP. By comparing measured Se concentrations with paleoprecipitation proxies of the East Asian Summer Monsoon (EASM), four distinct time periods between 2.6 Ma and the present were identified in which precipitation is found to have a significant effect on the amount of Se that was deposited in the Lingtai section. The work in the CLP is continued in the second section of the thesis (Chapter 3) where the role of precipitation in Se deposition was investigated at a much higher temporal resolution over the past 130 thousand years (kyr). The Loess-paleosol sediment samples in this study come from the Mangshan and Luochuan loess-paleosol sections, and in both sections increasing Se concentrations since 60 kyr are observed that are punctuated by a greatly accelerated increase in Se concentrations since the Holocene (11.7 kyr to present). Similar increases for other trace elements, e.g. arsenic (As) and lead (Pb), were not found and by comparing the behavior of Se to As and Pb, it could be shown that post depositional pedogenic processes are not responsible for the increased Se concentrations. These results suggest that there is an additional source of Se to these two sections. Furthermore, Se concentrations were compared to proxies of marine paleoproductivity from CLP moisture source regions and it was found that the highest rates of marine productivity correspond to times when the highest Se concentrations were measured. In the third section of this thesis (Chapter 4), the role that marine biological productivity plays in determining variations in rainwater Se concentrations at Plynlimon, Wales, United Kingdom was examined. Using atmospheric back trajectory modeling and satellite data, air mass exposure to an-

4 thropogenic and marine biogenic emission sources were calculated over the entire rainwater record (March 2007-March 2009). In periods of high biological productivity, i.e. in June, air mass exposure to productive oceanic regions (i.e. those with higher chlorophyll-a) correlated with trace element and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentrations in Plynlimon rainfall. Selenium had a stronger correlation with air mass chlorophyll-a exposure compared to other trace elements and additionally correlated with DOC in rainfall, which suggests that Se in rainfall in periods of high primary productivity was at least partially derived from marine biomass and was transported in the atmosphere as organic compounds, e.g., marine organic aerosols. The correlation with air mass chlorophyll-a exposure with other trace elements (arsenic, cobalt, nickel, vanadium, zinc), but the lack of correlation with DOC implies that marine organic matter is not a primary source of other trace elements and that these elements are potentially scavenged from the atmosphere by marine organic aerosols. This thesis shows that atmospheric Se deposition can impact the distribution of Se in soils and in the terrestrial environment. It establishes precipitation as an important source of Se to the terrestrial environment and provides support to the hypothesis that a portion of the Se being deposited in the continental environment is of a marine biogenic origin. This work provides fundamental knowledge about an important aspect of the global biogeochemical cycle of Se and future work in this field could benefit from and further build upon the understanding and interpretations of this doctoral thesis.

5 ZUSAMMENFASSUNG Selen (Se) ist ein chemisches Element, welches als Spurenstoff in der Erdoberfläche vorkommt. Trotz seines geringen Vorkommens in der natürlichen Umwelt, spielt Selen als sogenannter Mikronährstoff eine wichtige Rolle für die Gesundheit des Menschen und anderen Lebewesen. Ein Mangel an Selen kann ein Co-Faktor für eine Reihe von chronischen Krankheiten sein. Der Bereich der optimalen Aufnahmemenge ist allerdings sehr schmal und beträgt etwa 50 bis 450 µg pro Tag. Menschen nehmen Selen hauptsächlich über den Verzehr von Pflanzen und Pflanzenerzeugnisse auf, jedoch auch durch Fleisch und Fisch. Die Aufnahme von Selen in den Pflanzen wird durch die Bioverfügbarkeit in den Böden bestimmt, die wiederum eine Funktion der Selenspeziation und -konzentration in den Böden ist, in denen die Pflanzen wachsen. Die weltweite Verteilung der Selenkonzentrationen in den Böden ist sehr heterogen. Größtenteils weisen die Böden sehr niedrige Selenkonzentrationen auf und nur in relativ wenigen Regionen sind Selen-reiche Böden zu finden. Es wurde allgemein angenommen, dass die Selenkonzentrationen im Boden durch Gesteinsverwitterung bestimmt wird. Beispielsweise sind Selenkonzentrationen in Böden häufig dort erhöht, wo kohlenstoffhaltiges Sedimentgestein (z. Bsp. Schiefer) verwitterte, das reich an Selen ist. Da hohe Selenkonzentrationen durch Gesteinsverwitterung in der Regel nur in lokalen Hot Spots auftreten, lässt sich die großräumige Verteilung von Selen im Boden anhand geologischer Eigenschaften bisher nicht hinreichend erklären. Es wird daher angenommen, dass neben Selenreichen Gesteinen noch weitere Faktoren für die Selenkonzentrationen im Boden von Bedeutung sind. Um zusätzliche Quellen von Selen im Boden zu identifizieren, ist es hilfreich, den Selentransport innerhalb des globalen biogeochemischen Kreislaufs zu betrachten. Es wird dabei deutlich, dass große Mengen Selen in einem jährlichen Zyklus durch die Atmosphäre zirkulieren, wodurch atmosphärische Deposition eine mögliche Selenquelle darstellen könnte. Von der jährlichen atmosphärischen Selendeposition beträgt der Anteil an nasser Deposition etwa 80%, was andeutet, dass Niederschlag einen möglichen Transportweg darstellt. Im Allgemeinen wirkt Niederschlag als eine vii

6 viii Senke, die Selen aus der Atmosphäre entfernt, obwohl atmosphärisches Selen letztendlich atmosphärischen Quellenemissionen entstammt. Es wird geschätzt, dass von diesen natürlichen Quellen marine biogene Emissionen von volatilen methylierten Selenspezies (hauptsächlich Dimethyselenid [DMS] und Dimethyselenid [DMDSe]) am bedeutendsten sind. Auf Grundlage dieser Überlegungen ist es wahrscheinlich, dass die nasse Deposition von marin-biogenen Selenemissionen eine wichtige Quelle des im Boden gebundenen Selens darstellt. Aufgrund mangelnder quantitativer Messungen wurde die Bedeutung atmosphärischer nasser Deposition für die Selenkonzentrationen in der terrestrischen Umwelt bisher allerdings nur unzureichend untersucht. In dieser Doktorarbeit wurden zwei Schwerpunkte innerhalb dieser Problemstellung betrachtet. Sie befassen dich mit 1) der Bedeutung des Niederschlags für die Selenkonzentrationen in terrestrischen Sedimenten und Böden, sowie 2) dem möglichen Einfluss mariner biologischer Produktivität auf den Anteil an Selen, der in die terrestrische Umwelt gelangt. In den einzelnen Kapiteln dieser Doktorarbeit wurde die atmosphärischer Deposition von Selen an verschiedenen Standorten auf der Erde, sowie in unterschiedlichen geologischen Zeiträumen und in der Gegenwart analysiert. Im ersten Teil der Doktorarbeit (Kapitel 2) wurden historische Aufzeichnungen atmosphärischer Selendeposition auf dem chinesischen Lössplateau (CLP) mit den Schwankungen der lokalen Niederschlagsmenge in Beziehung gesetzt. Hierfür wurde die Jahre (Ma) lange Sequenz des Lingtai-Lössprofils verwendet. Durch den Vergleich von gemessenen Selenkonzentrationen mit Proxys für Paläoniederschlag des östlichen asiatischen Sommermonsuns (EASM) konnten vier diskrete Perioden von vor 2.6 Mio. Jahren bis heutige identifiziert werden, in denen Niederschlag einen signifikanten Einfluss auf die Ablagerung von Selen im Lingtai-Lössprofil hatte. Die Studien im CLP werden im zweiten Teil dieser Doktorarbeit (Kapitel 3) fortgeführt, wo der Zusammenhang zwischen Niederschlag und atmosphärischer Selendeposition in einer höheren zeitlichen Auflösung über die letzten Jahre untersucht wurde. Die Proben der Löss- und Paläoböden dieser Studie entstammen den Mangshan- und Luochuan-Lössprofilen. In beiden Profilen lassen sich seit ca Jahren erhöhte Selenkonzentrationen feststellen, mit einem verstärkten Anstieg ab dem Holozän ( Jahre). Andere Spurenstoffe, wie zum Beispiel Arsen (As) und Blei (Pb), weisen keinen derartigen Trend auf. Ein Vergleich des Verhaltens von Arsen und Blei deutet an, dass bodenbildende Prozesse nach der Deposition nicht für die erhöhten Selenkonzentrationen in den Lössprofilen verantwortlich sind. Daraus lässt sich folgern, dass eine weitere Quelle für Selen an beiden Standorten existieren muss. Zudem wurden die Selenkonzentrationen mit

7 PREFACE Proxys für marine Paläoproduktivität (basierend auf Feuchteregionen des CLP) verglichen. Es konnte festgestellt werden, dass die Zeiten mit höchsten mariner Produktivitätsraten mit den Zeiten der höchsten gemessenen Selenkonzentrationen im Boden übereinstimmen. Der dritte Teil dieser Arbeit (Kapitel 4) untersucht den Einfluss mariner biologischer Produktivität auf die Schwankungen der Selenkonzentrationen im Niederschlag von Plynlimon in Wales, Vereinigtes Königreich Großbritannien. Durch Modellierung atmosphärischer Rückwärtstrajektorien und Verwendung von Sattelitendaten konnte berechnet werden, wie lange die Luftmassen anthropogenen und marin-biogenen Quellen zwischen der Messperiode von März 2009 und März 2007 ausgesetzt waren. In Zeiten hoher biologischer Produktivität, d. h. im Juni, korreliert die Exposition der Luftmassen über produktiven Bereichen des Ozeans (d. h. mit erhöhtem Anteil an Chlorophyll-a) mit den Konzentrationen von Spurenstoffen und gelöstem organischen Kohlenstoff (DOC) im Niederschlag von Plynlimon. Im Vergleich zu anderen Spurenstoffen besteht für Selen ein stärkerer Zusammenhang zur Lage der Luftmassen über Chlorophyll-a-reichen Ozeanregionen. Zusätzlich korreliert Selen mit DOC, was darauf hindeutet, dass in Zeiten hoher mariner Produktivität Selen im Niederschlag zum Teil mariner Biomasse entstammte und in der Atmosphäre als organische Verbindung, z. Bsp. marin-organische Aerosole, transportiert wurde. Der deutliche Zusammenhang zwischen anderen Spurenelementen (Arsen, Kobalt, Nickel, Vanadium, Zink) und der Luftmassenexposition über Chlorophyll-a-reichen Ozeanregionen, sowie das Fehlen einer Korrelation zu DOC im Niederschlag lässt darauf schließen, das marines organisches Material nicht der primäre Ursprung anderer Spurenelemente war. Diese Elemente wurden möglicherweise durch marin-organische Aerosole aus der Atmosphäre ausgewaschen. Diese Doktorarbeit zeigt, wie atmosphärische Deposition die Verteilung von Selen in Böden in der terrestrischen Umwelt beeinflussen kann. Sie identifiziert Niederschlag als eine bedeutende Quelle von Selen und unterstützt die Hypothese, dass der Ursprung von Selen direkt mit der marinen biologischen Produktivität im Zusammenhang steht. In dieser Arbeit wurden neue, grundlegende Kenntnisse über einen Teil des globalen biogeochemischen Selenkreislaufs gewonnen, von dem zukünftige Forschung in diesem Bereich profitieren und auf dem sie aufbauen kann.
