3 Welcome at Humboldt Graduate School Willkommen an der Humboldt Graduate School The aim of the Humboldt Graduate School is to provide doctoral candidates of Humboldt-Universität with an excellent framework for their work by offering a broad and comprehensive education. Our trainings are mainly designed for doctoral candidates of our member programs. If workshops are not completely booked, individual doctoral candidates of Humboldt-Universität can participate within the Last Minute Offer. Aufgabe der Humboldt Graduate School ist es, den Doktorand/innen der Humboldt-Universität einen ausgezeichneten Rahmen für Ihre Arbeit sowie ein vielfältiges und überfachliches Angebot zu bieten. Das Angebot von Schlüsselqualifikationskursen richtet sich wesentlich an unsere Mitglieder, wobei auch für Individualpromovierende die Möglichkeit besteht, bei freien Kapazitäten im Rahmen des Last Minute-Angebotes an den Kursen teilzunehmen. Usually, the programs cover the costs. science skills TrAInInG (sc) This section promotes the professional competence of young researchers. Events in this category focus on communication with media and scientifi c presentation of research results in written and oral forms. Furthermore this section fosters training for young researchers didactical and pedagogical performance with our events Teaching Skills for Junior Scientists which is acknowledged as a module of the university teaching certifi cate by Berliner Zentrum für Hochschullehre. management skills TrAInInG (ma) These interdisciplinary events are aimed at widening your personal career opportunities. Therefore we offer training in project and event management, management of personal knowledge as well as media training for researchers. CAreer planning (CA) Holding a PhD is a big step towards an academic career. To manage this step successfully, we support you with workshops giving an overview on current trends of research career development in Europe and job application practice. As networking is important for your own career we encourage you to exchange experiences with colleagues in our workshops and lectures. COACHInG (CO) We provide workshops on time- and selfmanagement to make sure you get support on organizing your dissertation. In addition to these workshops, you can also take advantage of our individual coaching. mentoring The goal of our mentoring program is to support your next career step. If you have still undecided career plans, you should participate in the peer mentoring to devolop appropriate ideas. If you already have a broad yet clear aim, you are welcome to participate in the one-to-one mentoring to fi nd out how to get there ideally. Our focus is on you, the writer, and on your self-management during the writing process: How to motivate yourself to write? How to feel well during the writing process? How to make decisions and plans you can stick to? How to get your writing projects done in time? During the 1-day workshop you analyze how you approach your writing projects and find pragmatic alternatives for the areas that need improvement. In a follow-up session we reflect on the effectivity of the learned techniques and behaviours in everyday life. We discuss practical problems found during the implementation phase and apply individual fine tuning. Analysis of your writing work-flow Finding your own motivation Defeating writers block and procrastination, coping with perfectionism Using feedback to your advantage Office organization Dr. María Machón coaches scientists to improve transferable skills. She holds a PhD in Physics (TU Berlin) and has published over ten peer-reviewed articles with over 200 citations. She has refereed for five international journals, including the prestigious Physical Review Letters. The aim of this course is to familiarize participants with the strategies for writing successful grant/ fellowship applications to various funding bodies (focusing on DFG, BMBF, EU, and other organizations if requested by the audience). Participants will be asked to prepare a short mini-grant application in preparation for the course. The different parts of a grant application and their content Strategies for successful grant applications: Differences between different funding bodies and funding principles Common mistakes in grant applications and how to avoid them Evaluation of mini grant proposals Dr. Christina Schütte (ProSciencia Beratungs-GmbH, Lübeck) was intensively involved in acquisition and management of funded research and education projects for the MPI for Biophysical Chemistry in Göttingen, after finishing her PhD in Biochemistry in Bonn. Responding to typical questions which may come up during the defense will also be practiced in simulated scenarios. Furthermore the workshop will provide necessary information about the formal procedure, the requirements and social setting of a PhD examination. To apply for a job means to sell yourself, your skills, your abilities for professional growth. The first step is to know them and to name them. The second step is to know how to describe your competencies, your motivation and your personality, especially when applying for a job with either academic institutions, research departments in major corporations, international companies, public service etc. The third step is to identify the latest trends and to develop a goal-oriented application strategy. Selecting a committee: what should I take into account? The Do s and Don ts in oral PhD examinations How do I argue and convince people of my academic achievements? How do I deal with stage fright? How do I structure the preparation phase most effectively? How do I stay motivated in the final stretch? The convincing covering letter Curriculum Vitae: format and content Cover, photograph, index to appendices and list of publications How to apply online Discussion of participants application papers The successful job interview Dr. Matteo Garavoglia was educated at the universities of London (SOAS), Paris (IEP) and Berlin (FU). He is currently research associate at the Berlin-based Institut für Europäische Politik. Matteo s professional experience includes work with several NGO s as well as teaching and research assistant and the London School of Economics. Mr. Simon Chaplin works as a trainer with a main focus on applications and presentations. He already conducted several seminars for graduation program participants with great success. He was born in Lichfield, England, and graduated in German Philology and International Management from Aston University with honors. His qualifications also include a degree from Zurich Interpreter and Translator School. As well as examining the various stages in the writing process, we will focus on the structure of abstracts, how to enrich one s academic lexical repertoire and how to identify common errors which frequently arise in academic texts in the field of mathematics. We will also look at how to draft rapid prototypes so that arguments are organised in a coherent manner. Writing a review article in early stages of the PhD-project has several advantages. The aim of this workshop is to provide you with the skills needed for writing high quality reviews. You learn to organise dispersed information, to design knowledge maps and to plan text structures. Time-saving techniques are trained and you are encouraged to start immediately with your writing project. The objective of the second day is to understand how to achive the three essential elemanets of scientific writing: accuranca of content; an interesting treatment; a clear piece of writing. Please bring a copy of a review article to the workshop. Choose a review from your discipline, which is, in your opinion, high quality. Before the workshop participants will be asked to prepare an outline or draft of a planned research article and to write a draft Abstract of the article. Participants gather and share experiences. Before the training, participants will be asked to prepare an outline or draft of a planned research article. Publishing research articles in high quality journals is a demanding task. It is a task sometimes very rewarding and sometimes very frustrating. However, data protection laws remain and personal rights need to be respected. It is important to be aware of potential threats exchanging scientific data. At the same time, it is helpful to know how to benefit using state-of-the-art information-sharing technologies. The course aims to tackle both aspects. Initially, an overview about national and international data protection laws will be provided. In a practical part, ways to secure public data exchange will be demonstrated and tested by the participants. Furthermore tools and platforms for efficient data organization and knowledge exchange are shown. The course concludes with a discussion round about scientific data sharing policies: Data hugging versus open access.
