Answer the questions that follow, in English, in the spaces provided. Your answers must be based on the information you read. You will be rewarded for providing: all the information requested detailed answers. Part A Are German people great readers? Read this excerpt from an article about Germans reading habits and answer the questions. Glossary: Der Bücherwurm bookworm Die Deutschen sind das Land der Dichter aber Bücherwürmer sind sie nicht. In sechs Prozent aller deutschen Familien gibt es kein einziges Buch. Einundvierzig Prozent der Erwachsenen lesen weniger als dreimal im Monat ein Buch, und zwanzig Prozent lesen überhaupt keine Bücher. Nur jeder zweite Jugendliche hat eigene Jugendbücher, und neunzehn Prozent der Jugendlichen lesen gar nicht! (a) Are the Germans great readers? Give ONE statistic to support your answer. Eine Legende erzählt von dem Mädchen, das auf einem Berg sass. Der Rhein hat hier seine engste Stelle. Das Mädchen sang so schön, dass die Schiffer ihre Schiffe vergaßen und auf die Klippen fuhren. 4 4 Part C An article from the travel section reports that a trip to the North Sea or the Baltic coast may be more expensive than expected. Read the text and answer the questions. Glossary: der Leuchtturm the lighthouse Deutschland hat herrliche Strände an der Nordsee und Ostsee. Viele Leute möchten hier Ferien machen. Aber in einem deutschen Seebad kann das leider teuer werden. Denn in Deutschland muss man Geld (2.5 Euro pro Tag) bezahlen, um an den Strand zu kommen. Von dem Geld bezahlen die Seebäder zum Beispiel das Freibad, den Leuchtturm und das Saubermachen. Viele Leute finden es unfair, dass sie dafür bezahlen müssen. Sie sagen, dass der Strand für alle da ist. Sie möchten den Strand benutzen, ohne zu bezahlen. Aber die Insel Norderney hat ein elektronisches Karten-System. Dieses System registriert genau, ob man das Geld bezahlt hat. Wer das nicht gemacht hat, kann die Insel nicht verlassen. 6 6 QUESTION TWO: Fashion Read the two passages on fashion. Answer the questions that follow, in English, in the spaces provided. Your answers must be based on the information you read. You will be rewarded for providing: all the information requested detailed answers. Part A Seventeen-year-old Uwe writes about wearing the right gear. Glossary: sich vorstellen to imagine Brauchst du bestimmte Klamotten um akzeptiert zu werden? Ich denke ja. In meiner Clique fahren wir im Sommer viel Skateboard. Und im Winter versuchen wir alle zusammen, zwei Wochen in Österreich Snowboard zu fahren. Wenn man so ein Hobby hat, braucht man schon die passende Kleidung dafür. Weite Hosen und praktische Jacken sind ein Muss. Sonst wird man nicht akzeptiert. Und ich möchte auch modisch gekleidet sein. Da gehören eine schicke Sonnenbrille, eine Baseballkappe oder eine Mütze in der Farbe, die gerade in ist, schon dazu. Ich fühle mich auch viel besser, wenn ich tolle Klamotten trage. Und ehrlich gesagt, denke ich, dass man ohne die richtigen Klamotten nie hundertprozentig akzeptiert wird. Wer kann sich schon einen Skateboarder in Leggings und einem engen, alten T-Shirt vorstellen? Auf den würden doch alle mit dem Finger zeigen und sagen: Sag mal, was ist denn mit dem los?" 8 8 Part B Laura, 20, writes about the role of clothes in her life. Für mich ist es unwichtig, was jemand trägt. Es ist doch viel wichtiger, was ein Mensch macht oder wie er über bestimmte Dinge denkt. Ich kleide mich so, wie es für mich am praktischsten und bequemsten ist. Ich ziehe fast immer Jeans und T-Shirts an. Und eine alte Lederjacke. Ich verstehe überhaupt nicht, wie manche Leute so viel Geld ausgeben, nur um genauso modisch auszusehen wie ein Film-oder Fernseh-Star. Das ist doch völlig absurd! Nein, für mich gibt es wirklich wichtigere Sachen als Klamotten. Ich gebe mein Geld lieber für gute Musik oder Reisen aus. In den Sommerferien bin ich mit meinen Freunden in Frankreich, Spanien und Portugal gewesen. Und wenn man so mit dem Zug auf Reisen ist, trifft man viele interessante Leute. Ja, die Reise fand ich wirklich gut. Deshalb sparen wir jetzt schon Geld für den nächsten Sommer. Und für Kleidung, da gebe ich keinen Pfennig zu viel aus.
