1 DEWI Magazin Nr. 3, Februar 7 Windenergienutzung in Deutschland - Stand Wind Energy Use in Germany - Status C. Ender; DEWI Wilhelmshaven 1. Die durchschnittliche Leistung der neu installierten WEA stieg im Vergleich zum Vorjahreszeit- Anzahl der Anlagen/Jahr Number of Units per Year Abb. 1: Fig. 1: zweites Halbjahr / second half of the year erstes Halbjahr / first half of the year kumulierte Anzahl der Anlagen / accumulated number of units Tab. 1: Tab. 1: 1. The average installed power per WT therefore is 1,14 kw. In the year 6 alone, 1,8 WTs with a rated power of,33.13 MW were installed in Germany. Compared to the wind energy use in the previous year [1] there was an increase in newly installed turbines of approx. 1 %, and the newly installed capacity went up by 4 MW or approx. 4 %, and so topped the result of 4. This increase in comparison to the downward trend of the previous years is probably partly due to projects being postponed to 6 because of permissions not being granted or component shortages, since the bulk of these installations took place in the months of January and February. Compared with the previous year, the average rated power per wind turbine went up by approx. 7.3 % and reached 1,849 kw in the year 6. Wind turbine manufacturers also reported the turbines 1 Die Angaben basieren ausschließlich auf Herstellerangaben. Repowering is included in the diagram of Fig. 4 and is not marked separately in a different colour. If you look at the annual installations divided into coastal and inland areas over the course of time (Fig. ), there is a clear tendency away from the coast to the inland areas. In order to show the tendency from Fig. more clearly, the federal states were grouped in strips running parallel to the coast, resulting in one coastal strip and three inland strips. Since with increasing distance from the coast the wind resource normally declines, it is possible to analyse the development of wind energy use year by year and in strips of increasing distance from the coast (Figs. 6 and 7). One possible reason for this shift is the fact that priority areas with good wind resources at the coast are becoming 3

Potential Annual Energy Yield The potential annual energy yield for a 1% wind year is calculated on the basis of the average load factor of the year 4 [] calculated for WTs of different power classes at different sites, using the wind index IWET V3 []. In addition we also assume that all WTs reported by the end of the year contribute a full annual energy yield, which of course is not the case in reality. With regard to the real annual energy yield for the year 6 (3.6 TWh) it should be taken into account that the year 6 was a sub-average wind year and was 4 percentage points below the wind year 4 on which the calculation is based. The average load factor per federal state is more or less equal on average for a 1 % wind year, but in the different power classes the load factors differ from year to year. Tables and 6 give an overview of the potential annual energy yield of all WTs erected in Germany, in the first table divided into seven WT power classes and in the second table split up according to federal states, including their share in the net energy consumption of Klein / Small Mittel / Medium Groß / Large D Fläche/Area bis/up to D Fläche/Area bis/up to D Fläche/Area bis/up to m m² kw m m² kw m m² kw,-8,- 1 16,1-, , , ,1-11,1-1,1-3 4, ,1-9 3, ,1-16 1,1-6 3,1-4 8, , , Tab. 4: Einteilung der WEA in Größenklassen nach Rotordurchmesser D und Rotorfläche, mit den dazugehörenden Leistungswerten zur Information (Zahlenangaben gerundet) Leistungsklassen und Tab. 4: Division of WTs in size groups according to rotor diameter D and rotor area, with their respective rated power value (figures are rounded) zum anderen über die einzelnen Bundesländer inkl. When looking at the power group classification, it is remarkable that the multi-megawatt class, although accounting for only 43 % in actual numbers of wind turbines, supplies almost 7 % of the total electricity generated from wind. Tab. 6 gives the shares of the potential annual wind energy yield in the net energy consumption of the federal states and for Germany as a whole, referred to the year 6. At the top of the list is Saxony- Anhalt with a share of 37.% in the net energy consumption, followed by Schleswig-Holstein with 34.9% and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern with 33.4%. Lower Saxony, the federal state with the largest wind energy installation (Fig. 3), is in the fifth position with 19% behind Brandenburg (8.1%). Market Trends in Turbine Size and Technology Compared to the average installed capacity per wind turbine has increased noticeably by 7.3 %. This is due to the new wind turbine types which in 6 for the first time were installed in larger numbers. In 6 mainly wind turbines of the rotor size group of 6 to 9 m diameter were installed. In percent, this class now accounts for a share of 9 % of the newly installed power. The rotor class above 9m has a share of about 3 % in 6. This brings the share of wind turbines with over 1. MW in the newly installed capacity to approximately 9%. In Fig. 1 the shares of different rotor 7

Remarkable in this connection is the fact that the class of 6.1 to 9 m has almost reached the highest level and that it is likely to remain on the market longer than the previous classes. Fig. 11 gives an overview of the exact shares of the individual WT sizes in the newly installed WTs in 6. Compared to the previous year the share of WTs under 1.8 MW decreased by 18.1 % to 6.7 %, whereas the installation figures of WT sizes above MW went up significantly. Apart from size and rated capacity of a wind turbine there are other distinguishing features: the number of blades, type of control etc. characterise different technologies which partly depend on the size of the wind turbine, as can be seen in table 7 [4]. The number of rotor blades used is not a decisive criterion, because in the size range contemplated here only upwind three-bladed wind turbines are available on 8

With 1,3 WTs and a newly installed capacity of,33.13 MW in Germany this is 4 % above the result of the previous year with regard to installed capacity. At the end of 6, 18,68 wind turbines with a rated power of,61.86 MW were installed in Germany. The repowering figures reported by the manufacturers were 79 wind turbines with an installed capacity of 6.19 MW replaced by wind turbines with a total of MW. Concerning the regional distribution, 69 new WTs with an installed capacity of 8.6 MW were installed in Brandenburg, which is approx. 1. % more capacity than last year. In Lower Saxony, the newly installed capacity was MW, which is 14.9 % below the result of the previous year. In the third position is Saxony-Anhalt where 18 WTs with an installed capacity of MW were erected, followed by the states of Rhineland-Palatinate with 18.1 MW and North- Rhine Westphalia with MW. In almost all other federal states, more or almost the equal amount of wind power was installed than last year. The share of the potential annual energy yield in the net energy consumption based on a 1 % wind year by the end of the year 6 amounts to 37. % in Saxony-Anhalt, followed by Schleswig-Holstein (34. %), Mecklenburg-Vorpommern (33.4 %), Brandenburg (8.1 %) and Lower Saxony (19 %). The trend towards larger wind turbines has continued in 6. After the low rate of increase of newly installed power in, it rose again by 7.3 % in 6, compared to last year. On average the installed capacity of all newly erected turbines in the past five years increased by about 7.7 % (9. % last year). The average installed power of all newly erected wind turbines is 1,848.6 kw, the average capacity per WT of the total installed turbines is 1,13.66 kw. Compared to the previous year, the share of WTs below 1.8 MW in the newly installed WTs of 6 decreased by 18.1 % to 6.7 %, whereas all WT sizes above MW experienced a significant increase. The share of -MW wind turbines now is 61.6 %, and for WTs between.1 and. MW it is about 1 %.. The number of newly installed wind turbines of over 3 MW increased from 6 WTs in to 18 WTs in 6 and has a share in the total numbers of WTs of 1. %. 3
