2 Abstract China s rising population led to a drastic intensification of agriculture and livestock production in the last 50 years. Excessive mineral nitrogen (N)-fertilizer application and intensive livestock production cause high N losses to the environment. Pathways of N losses include gaseous N emissions, via denitrification (N 2 O, N 2 ) and ammonia (NH 3 ) volatilization, nitrate (NO - 3 ) leaching and run-off from soils. Ammonia emissions are one of the most important N loss pathways in the North China Plain (NCP). They contribute to soil acidification, eutrophication and form secondary particles or aerosols, which can cause human health problems. To define agricultural practices which help to reduce NH 3 emissions, measurements of NH 3 volatilization were conducted in the NCP in Zhengding, 110 km southwest of Baoding. NH 3 emissions were measured with the Dräger-Tube method (DTM) on winter wheat and vegetable fields with different fertilizer treatments from April to June The treatments on the winter wheat plots included urea and urea followed by immediate irrigation. The treatments on the vegetable field included biogas plant effluent, cattle manure and urea. Additionally, soil samples were taken in three different depths before and after fertilization. The soil samples showed high mineral nitrogen (N min ) contents. A decrease in calcium carbonate (CaCO 3 ) content and ph in topsoils was visible, reflecting the risk of future acidification. Urea applied on winter wheat showed the highest NH 3 loss of 15 % of applied N. If the application of urea on winter wheat was followed by irrigation, NH 3 volatilization could be reduced to 0.1 % of applied N. The mean cumulative NH 3 loss of biogas plant effluent applied on vegetable fields was 3.4 % of applied N. The loss was much lower than from other fertilizers such as urea and manure. Therefore, it is recommended to use biogas plant effluent as fertilizer in the NCP. An improved N management based on the soil N min content is recommendable and would improve nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) and reduce environmental contamination. The ammonia volatilization sub-module of the HERMES model was able to simulate measured ammonia volatilization in the NCP to a satisfactory extent (mean absolute error (MAE): 4 kg N ha -1 ). It is suggested to validate the model with further data sets from the NCP or from regions with comparable conditions. III

3 Zusammenfassung Das Bevölkerungswachstum in China hat in den letzten 50 Jahren zu einer drastischen Intensivierung der Landwirtschaft und einer Vervielfachung der Tierbestände geführt. Exzessiver Einsatz mineralischen Stickstoffdüngers und die intensive Viehhaltung haben hohe Stickstoffverluste in die Umwelt zur Folge. Verlustpfade des Stickstoffs (N) sind zum einen gasförmige Emissionen durch Denitrifikation (N 2 O, N 2 ) und Ammoniak (NH 3 )-Volatilisation, zum anderen Nitrat (NO - 3 )-Leaching und Oberflächenabfluss von Böden. Ammoniak- Volatilisation ist einer der wichtigsten N-Verlustpfade in der Nordchinesischen Tiefebene (NCP). Sie trägt zur Bodenversauerung und Eutrophierung bei und ist an der Bildung gesundheitsrelevanter sekundärer Partikel in der Atmosphäre beteiligt. Um landwirtschaftliche Methoden zu finden, die NH 3 -Emissionen verringern, wurden Messungen der Ammoniak- Volatilisation in der NCP in Zhengding, 110 km südwestlich von Baoding durchgeführt. Die Ammoniak-Emissionen wurden mit der Dräger-Tube Methode (DTM) auf Winterweizen- und Gemüsefeldern von April bis Juni 2016 gemessen. Die Winterweizenfelder wurden mit Harnstoff gedüngt. Auf einem Teil der so gedüngten Felder folgte eine Bewässerung. Zur Düngung der Gemüsefelder wurde entweder Harnstoff, Gärrest oder Rindermist verwendet. Zusätzlich zur Ammoniakmessung wurden Bodenproben in drei Tiefen vor und nach der Düngung entnommen. Die untersuchten Bodenproben zeigten hohe mineralische N (N min )-Gehalte. Eine Abnahme des Calciumcarbonat (CaCO 3 )-Gehaltes und des ph Wertes im Oberboden war feststellbar und zeigt das zukünftige Risiko einer Versauerung an. Die höchsten Ammoniak (NH 3 )-Verluste von 15 % waren auf mit Harnstoff gedüngten Weizenfeldern feststellbar. Wenn Bewässerung auf die Düngung des Weizens mit Harnstoff folgte, konnte die NH 3 -Volatilization auf 0.1 % der applizierten N-Menge reduziert werden. Der kumulative NH 3 -Verlust von auf Gemüsefeldern appliziertem Gärrest betrug 3.4 %. Dieser Verlust war deutlich geringer als der bei Harnstoff- oder Rindermist-Düngung, weshalb die Verwendung von Gärrest als Dünger in der NCP zu empfehlen ist. Ein verbessertes N-Management basierend auf dem N min -Gehalt des Bodens wird empfohlen und würde die Stickstoffnutzungs-Effizienz (NUE) verbessern und Umweltbelastungen verringern. Mit dem Modell HERMES wurde die gemessene Ammoniak-Volatilisation zufriedenstellend simuliert (Mittlerer absoluter Fehler (MAE): 4 kg N ha -1 ). Es wird empfohlen dieses Modell mit anderen Datensätzen aus der NCP oder von Standorten mit vergleichbaren Bedingungen weiter zu validieren. IV
